Download or read book Tuning In The Great Gildersleeve written by Clair Schulz and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve bade farewell to Fibber McGee and Molly and left Wistful Vista on a train in 1941, no one could have predicted that he would be riding the airwaves with his own new show until 1957. But when one listens to episodes of radio's first spinoff, it becomes clear the The Great Gildersleeve succeeded because its likable and amusing characters were appealingly fallible, much like the folks each of us knew in our hometowns. This book is a guide to more than 500 episodes of The Great Gildersleeve that are in circulation and also to the scripts of 46 episodes for which no recordings exist. Background on the development of the program is included, and the appendices include a list of episodes as well as information about cast members, notable occurrences on the program, ratings, and the films and TV series.

Book excerpt: Old-time radio, the folk revival, the golden age of science fiction, steam railroads, baseball, the Western, and other genres color our images of the 1950s. But contrary to the countercultural myth that America during this period was a sterile, soulless society, culturally and intellectually empty, it was an introspective era of innovation and creativity, the seedtime of the sixties, the harbinger of which was the urban folk revival. The Best of Times presents a collection of essays, each followed by a related memoir, focusing on postwar popular culture, exploring topics that mark the era but are also nostalgic in themselves—the comforting continuity of long-running radio shows, train whistles that brought the sweet sorrow of distance to small-town nights, lazy summers of baseball, endless stretches of unknown lands to the West that once compelled the imagination, the heroes and vagabonds of folksong who roamed a simpler world, and dreams of alien civilizations on neighboring planets, deepened by the dawning reality of spaceflight. These pieces balance personal, cultural, and mythic nostalgia, recalling author Wyn Wachhorst’s youth, the postwar era, and its dreams of a fabled West or Norman Rockwell’s small-town America. Blending history, memoir, imagery, and analysis, this collection of essays offers poetic reflections on the nature of nostalgia and postwar America.

Book Frank and Anne Hummert s Radio Factory

Download or read book Frank and Anne Hummert s Radio Factory written by Jim Cox and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2003-05-21 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frank and Anne Hummert brought at least 125 separate series to the airwaves. The production dynasty over which they presided extended far beyond the serialized melodrama that became their trademark. Their genres also included music, mystery, juvenile adventure, quiz, sports, news, comedy and dramatic theater. The Hummerts tried to appeal to everyone's tastes and probably influenced more old time radio listeners than anyone else. By the 1940s the twosome controlled four and a half hours of the national weekday broadcast schedule. This book explores the private lives and professional dealings of broadcasting's most prolific creator-producers. There are five appendices: a list of all broadcast series that were created, adapted, supervised, augmented or influenced by the Hummerts; a list of the most active players among radio producers stemming from the Golden Age and their best-remembered titles; a collection of statements attributed to Frank or Anne that express their philosophy of broadcast programming; a chronology of defining moments in the Hummerts' lives; and three sample programming schedules that give the reader a clear understanding of the Hummerts' involvement in radio producing.

Book Farmer Cowboy Soldier Spy

Download or read book Farmer Cowboy Soldier Spy written by Robert Henry Olander and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2010-10 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just a few months ago I celebrated my 75th birthday with a family reunion on the shores of Lake Chapala, Mexico's largest lake and the site of our winter home. We ranged in age from 13 months to 75 years. Somewhere along the way I had become the senior member of the family - the previous generation had become little more than memories, lost but for a few faded photographs. I wished I knew more about my parents, my grandparents or perhaps my great-grandparents who lived in a pre-industrial world before the advent of cars and airplanes, before telephones and electricity, even before photography had been perfected. I wished my morfar's morfar, Olaf Borgquist, had written about his life as a blacksmith in the early 19th century. I decided then and there to record the story of my life; to pass on to my grandchildren and great grandchildren what life was like for an average citizen of the USA during the 20th Century.
