Book excerpt: TULSIDAS: LIFE & POEMS Translation & Introduction by Paul Smith Tulsidas (1532-1623), also known as Goswami Tulsidas, was a Hindu Bhakti poet-saint, reformer and philosopher renowned for his devotion for the Avatar when He appeared as Rama. A composer of several popular works, he is best known for being the author of the epic Ramcharitmanas, a retelling of the Sanskrit Ramayana. Tulsidas was acclaimed in his lifetime to be a reincarnation of Valmiki, the composer of the original Ramayana in Sanskrit. He is also considered to be the composer of the Hanuman Chalisa, a popular devotional hymn dedicated to Hanuman, the divine monkey helper and devotee of Rama. Tulsidas lived permanently and died in the city of Varanasi. The Tulsi Ghat in Varnasi is named after him. He founded the Sankatmochan Temple dedicated to Hanuman in Varanasi, believed to stand at the place where he had the sight of Hanuman. Tulsidas started the Ramlila plays, a folk-theatre adaption of the Ramayana. He has been acclaimed as one of the greatest poets in Hindi, Indian, and world literature. The impact of Tulsidas and his works on the art, culture and society in India is widespread and is seen to date in vernacular language, Ramlila plays, Hindustani classical music, popular music, and television series. Book excerpt: The Ramayana, Written In Sanskrit By Valmiki Is Considered To Be The 'Adikavya', The First Ever Poem. Tulsidas Rendered It Into Hindi In The Sixteenth Century. But His 'Ramcharit-Manas' Differs From The Original In Many Ways. It Was Written At A Time When A Very Vast Area Of India Was Under Mughal Rule. Amongst The Hindus, There Were Frequent Controversies Between The Worshippers Of Shiva, Vishnu And The Mother Goddess, And Again Between The Worshippers Of Rama And Krishna. There Were Also Cults Which Were Almost Cut Off From The Mainstream Of Indian Life. It Is To The Credit Of Tulsidas That He Tried To Weave All These Cults Into An Integrated Whole. He Made His Rama Say That He Would Not Tolerate Anyone Who Showed Disrespect To Shiva. He Worshipped Not Only At The Temples Dedicated To Rama But Also At Those Dedicated To Krishna. His Works And Teachings Stressed The Importance Of The Life Of A Householder And Weaned People Away From The Tantric Cults. Tulsidas Hailed From A Poor Family Of Rajapur In Uttar Pradesh. He Was Orphaned Soon After His Birth And Even His Foster-Mother Died When He Was Barely Seven Years Old. When He Was Married, He Became Deeply Attached To His Wife, Ratna. She Was The First Person In His Life Whom He Could Call His Own. One Day Not Finding Her At Home On His Return, He Became Extremely Restless And Rushed To His Father-In-Law'S House In The Dead Of The Night, Braving Heavy Rains And A Storm. But Ratna Rebuked Him And Said, "Had You Loved Rama As Intensely As You Do This Bundle Of Flesh And Bones, You Would Have Overcome All Mortal Fears." This Was The Turning Point In His Life. The Story As Narrated In This Book Is Mostly Based On Legends. A Contemporary Of Shakespeare, Tulsidas (1532-1623) Was Known For Singing The Glory Of Rama, The Prince Of Ayodhya. The Ramcharitmanas, Tulsidas Version Of The Ramayana In Awadhi, A Dialect Of Hindi, Consists Of Over 1,0000 Stanzas Of About 12 To 18 Lines Each. Tulsi'S Words Are Musical And Hypnotic. Every Village And Town In The Hindi Heartland Has A Troupe That Enacts The Story Of Rama Based On Tulsida'S Work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Life of a Text offers a vivid portrait of one community's interaction with its favorite text—the epic Ramcaritmanas—and the way in which performances of the epic function as a flexible and evolving medium for cultural expression. Anthropologists, historians of religion, and readers interested in the culture of North India and the performance arts will find breadth of subject, careful scholarship, and engaging presentation in this unique and beautifully illustrated examination of Hindi culture. The most popular and influential text of Hindi-speaking North India, the epic Ramcaritmanas is a sixteenth century retelling of the Ramayana story by the poet Tulsidas. This masterpiece of pre-modern Hindi literature has always reached its largely illiterate audiences primarily through oral performance including ceremonial recitation, folksinging, oral exegesis, and theatrical representation. Drawing on fieldwork in Banaras, Lutgendorf breaks new ground by capturing the range of performance techniques in vivid detail and tracing the impact of the epic in its contemporary cultural context.

Download or read book Kavitawali of Goswami Tulsidas written by Sri Ajai Kumar Chhawchharia and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-01-24 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Kavitawali' is the legendary story of Lord Ram that was written by saint-poet Goswami Tulsidas as part of his Trilogy on Lord Ram's life and time-popularly known as 'Ramayan'. The other two books in this Trilogy are Geetawali and the epic Ram Charit Manas. Each of the three books of the Trilogy is a masterpiece in itself. The other two books would also be made available by this author as soon as they are ready for publication. 'Kavitawali' narrates the story of Lord Ram in a poetic style that is called 'Kavitta' in Hindi. It is basically fine and excellent poetry in one of its best forms, being written as it is in Tulsidas' unique style of narration that is at once lucid, enchanting and captivating for the mind. He has employed all the skills and mastery of words that he is so famous for. The probable reason of his writing Kavitawali (and for that matter Geetawali as well, besides, of course, the epic Ram Charit Manas) is perhaps he wished to narrate the excellent story of Lord Ram in from different angles and employing different styles of poetic composition so that the story as a whole becomes exceedingly enchanting, fascinating and beautiful as it could now be read and recited in various styles and tones to suit every mood and liking of the reader. Further, it helped Tulsidas to describe many aspects of the story which could not be possibly highlighted sufficiently in one book alone due to various restrictions-such as for instance the restrictions imposed by the style selected for the composition, or the flow of the narration, or the limitations of pages-could be overcome in the next book. So, Kavitawali helped Tulsidas to express himself better and more articulately because now he could focus his attention more to highlight in very expressive terms certain parts or aspects of the epic story as well as to fill in certain gaps that he couldn't probably do in the other two books of the Trilogy. Book Kabir Kabir The life and work of the early modern poet philosopher

Download or read book Kabir Kabir The life and work of the early modern poet philosopher written by Purushottam Agrawal and published by Westland Non-Fiction. This book was released on with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A FASCINATING AND RIGOROUS EXAMINATION OF KABIR’S LIFE AND POETRY AND HIS RELEVANCE TODAY, FOR BOTH THE SCHOLAR AND GENERAL READER As the right wing tries to claim Kabir for itself, while other conservatives disown him and yet others portray him as a secular idol beyond religion, the poet has never been so misunderstood. Coming from the Nirgun bhakti tradition, the words of this fifteenth-century poet have the power to reach beyond time and speak to us today. Was he a Hindu or Muslim or was he beyond religion? Did he try to cultivate a new faith or did he eschew organised religion altogether? Was his modernity an exception or a reflection of the times he lived in? What does Kabir’s life and poetry tell us about this nation’s past and present? In this rare appraisal of Kabir’s writings and his life, Purushottam Agarwal approaches this timeless poet-revolutionary with little preconceptions, presenting him the way the poet wanted to be seen, rather than what his followers and fans want to see in him.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hanuman, the devoted monkey helper of Rama and Sita, has long been recognized as a popular character in India's ancient Ramayana epic. But more recently he has also become one of the most beloved and worshiped gods in the Hindu pantheon - enshrined in majestic new temples, but equally present in poster art, advertising, and mass media. Drawing on Sanskrit and vernacular texts, classical iconography and modern TV serials, and extensive fieldwork and interviews, Philip Lutgendorf challenges the academic cliché of Hanuman as a "minor" or "folk" deity by exploring his complex and growing role in South Asian religion and culture. This wide-ranging study examines the historical evolution of Hanuman's worship, his close association with Shiva and goddesses, his invocation in tantric ritual, his physical immortality and enduring presence in sacred sites, and his appeal to devotees who include scholars, wrestlers, healers, politicians, and middle-class urbanites. Lutgendorf also offers a rich array of entertaining stories not previously available in English: an expanding epic cycle that he christens the "Hanumayana." Arguing that Hanuman's role as cosmic "middle man" is intimately linked to his embodiment in a charming and provocative simian form, Lutgendorf moves beyond the Indian subcontinent to interrogate the wider human fascination with anthropoid primates as boundary beings and as potent signifiers of both Self and Other.

Book A Modern Interpretation of Goswami Tulsidas s RAMCHARITMANAS

Download or read book A Modern Interpretation of Goswami Tulsidas s RAMCHARITMANAS written by Arun Tiwari and published by . This book was released on 2020-08-31 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What is the 'Ramcharitmanas'? It is Rama's story, or Rama's conduct, as narrated by Goswami Tulsidas. However, this doesn't quite explain what the word 'manasa' (mind) is doing in the title. The explanation given, in the 'Ramcharitmanas', is that this story was in Shiva's mind and came to Tulsidas via Parvati and Narharidas, Tulsidas's guru. It is no different with this volume by Professor Arun Tiwari. As a text, the 'Ramcharitmanas' is suffused with bhakti, and Rama's story and 'Ramcharitmanas' become what the reader, as a bhakta, take them to be, much more than with any other text. In this case, the bhakta is also a re-teller and re-interpreter, and bhakti is blended with Advaita Vedanta, although labels are best avoided. Goswami Tulsidas composed the 'Ramcharitmanas' rather late in life. Age brings wisdom. Through this book, Arun Tiwari too brings forth the wisdom that he now passes on, especially to the younger generation, in a novel and engaging way. - Bibek Debroy, Eminent author who translated Valmiki Ramayana into English and currently Chairman, Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, and Member, NITI-Aayog, Government of India."Profusely blessed, Prof. Arun Tiwari, the celebrated co-author of 'Transcendence: My Spiritual Experiences with Pramukh Swamiji' with Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, has written a modern narrative of the timeless 'Ramcharitmanas' in the language and flair of the youth. God can be seen through the loving eyes of a devotee in the Murti and felt in the service of a Gunantit Guru. A must-read for people in a world overwhelmed by and overloaded with material pleasures and desires. The book provides a guiding path for the devout to connect with the Supreme. Jai Swaminarayan with deepest prayers! - Sadhu Swayamprakashdas (Pujya Dr. Swami), BAPS SWAMINARAYAN SANSTHA.

Book excerpt: VRIND: LIFE & POEMS Translation & Introduction by Paul Smith Vrind Kavi (1643-1723) was an Indian Bhakti saint and poet in the Hindi language from Marwar in present day Rajasthan. He was an important poet of the Ritikal period of Hindi Literature known for his poems on ethics and mostly known for his work Nitisatsai (1704), a collection of 700 dohas. He was the guru of Raj Singh (ruled 1706-1748), ruler of Kishangarh where he was court poet. Like his contemporaries, Mati Ram, Rasnidhi and Ram Sahay, his doha poetry was primarily in Braj Bhasha dialect. It was deeply influenced by Bihari, noted poet of the preceding generation. He was a prolific poet and through his career worked for various patrons. After serving in Kishangarh, he moved to Delhi in 1673, where he was hired to tutor Azim-ush-Shan son of Azam Shah and grandson of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. Azam Shah later succeeded his father and was a great enthusiast of Braj poetry and in time Azim-ush-Shan become patron of Vrind. In 1697, Azim-ush-Shan was made Governor of Bengal and so Vrind too shifted to Dhaka. During this period, he completed his most noted work, Nitisatsai 'Seven Hundred Verses (Dohas) of Ethics' in 1704.
