The censorship and suppression of challenging ideas against the tide of mainstream research, the blacklisting of scientists, for instance, is neither the best way to do and filter science, nor to promote progress in the human knowledge. The removal of good and novel ideas from the scientific stage is very detrimental to the pursuit of the truth. There are instances in which a mere unqualified belief can occasionally be converted into a generally accepted scientific theory through the screening action of refereed literature and meetings planned by the scientific organizing committees and through the distribution of funds controlled by "club opinions". It leads to unitary paradigms and unitary thinking not necessarily associated to the unique truth. This is the topic of this book: to critically analyze the problems of the official (and sometimes illicit) mechanisms under which current science (physics and astronomy in particular) is being administered and filtered today, along with the onerous consequences these mechanisms have on all of us. Apart from the editors, Juan Miguel Campanario, Brian Martin, Wolfgang Kundt, J. Marvin Herndon, Marian Apostol, Halton C. Arp, Tom Van Flandern, Andrei P. Kirilyuk, Dmitri Rabounski and Henry H. Bauer, all of them professional researchers, reveal a pessimistic view of the miseries of the actual system, while a glimmer of hope remains in the "leitmotiv" claim towards the freedom in doing research and attaining an acceptable level of ethics in science.

Book excerpt: In Against the Tide: An Autobiographical Account of a Professional Outsider, Leslie Woods relates the fascinating story of his life from fisherman's son in New Zealand to head of the Mathematical Institute at the University of Oxford. After starting at a trade school, he won a scholarship to a university, then joined the RNZAF, and later became a fighter pilot in the Pacific. Woods then won a Rhodes scholarship to Merton College in Oxford after WWII. Following several years of research in aerodynamics, he became a professor of engineering at the University of New South Wales. He also had a fellowship with Oxford's Balliol College and had a consultancy at Culham Laboratory where he researched the theory of magnetically confined hot plasmas. In 1970, Woods became a professor of plasma theory yet became disillusioned with the fusion energy project, which he believes survived on exaggerated claims of progress. Besides recounting his history, Woods explains why magnetic fusion has failed to succeed and outlines the philosophy of science to which he subscribes. He writes frankly about both his successes and failures and finishes with an account of his taking up gliding at the age of 74.

The westerly, northerly, and vertical winds and temperature are governed by four second order partial differential equations derived from the perturbation fluid equations for momentum, continuity, thermal energy, and the ideal gas law applied to a spherical, rotating, viscous atmosphere with anisotropic ion drag. The equations represent perturbations about a basic atmospheric state with latitude- and height-dependent mean winds, temperature, and composition. Model parameterizations described include mean winds and temperatures, molecular and eddy viscosity and thermal conductivity, ion-neutral collision frequency for momentum transfer, and solar thermal and lunar gravitational forcing. Thermal excitation occurs via absorption of EUV and UV radiation in the thermosphere, H2O insolation absorption in the troposphere and lower stratosphere, and O3 insolation absorption in the mesosphere. Ion-neutral coupling provides an important semidiurnal momentum source in the F-region. In addition, extensive tabulations and figures representing numerical solutions of diurnal and semidiurnal temperatures and winds every 6 deg of latitude from the surface to 400 km are presented for equinox and solstice conditions.
