Book Ludics in Surrealist Theatre and Beyond

Download or read book Ludics in Surrealist Theatre and Beyond written by Vassiliki Rapti and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking as its point of departure the complex question about whether Surrealist theatre exists, this book re-examines the much misunderstood artistic medium of theatre within Surrealism, especially when compared to poetry and painting. This study reconsiders Surrealist theatre specifically from the perspective of ludics-a poetics of play and games-an ideal approach to the Surrealists, whose games blur the boundaries between the 'playful' and the 'serious.' Vassiliki Rapti's aims are threefold: first, to demystify André Breton's controversial attitude toward theatre; second, to do justice to Surrealist theatre, by highlighting the unique character that derives from its inherent element of play; and finally, to trace the impact of Surrealist theatre in areas far beyond its generally acknowledged influence on the Theatre of the Absurd-an impact being felt even on the contemporary world stage. Beginning with the Surrealists' 'one-into-another' game and its illustration of Breton's ludic dramatic theory, Rapti then examines the traces of this kind of game in the works of a wide variety of Surrealist and Post-Surrealist playwrights and stage directors, from several different countries, and from the 1920s to the present: Roger Vitrac, Antonin Artaud, Günter Berghaus, Nanos Valaoritis, Robert Wilson, and Megan Terry.

Book L absurde dans le th tre Dada et pr surr aliste fran ais

Download or read book L absurde dans le th tre Dada et pr surr aliste fran ais written by Mariana Kunešová and published by Masarykova univerzita. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Publikace se zaměřuje na absurdno a jeho scénický potenciál v divadle francouzského dada a začínajícího surrealismu. Korpus tvoří tři texty, jež dosud nebyly předmětem odpovídajícího výzkumu: dva z nich nebyly z hlediska scéničnosti hodnoceny (T. Tzara: První nebeské dobrodružství pana Antipyrina, R. Vitrac: Tajemství lásky), třetí téměř zcela unikl pozornosti (A. Breton – P. Soupault: Račte).

Book Andr Breton

    Book Details:
  • Author : J. H. Matthews
  • Publisher : John Benjamins Publishing
  • Release : 1986-01-01
  • ISBN : 9027217327
  • Pages : 189 pages

Download or read book Andr Breton written by J. H. Matthews and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1986-01-01 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breton's stature is much greater than that of a number of contemporaries who have received, already, far more attention from the critics than he. It provides justification without excuse, especially when the commentator's purpose is to shed light on the intricacies of Breton's mind, the significance of his original work, or the impact of his ideas on twentieth-century culture. Hence the aim pursued in the present study may be stated without further preamble: To attempt to broaden understanding of the evolution of Andr Breton's thinking during a critical period in his life, the one which brought him to leadership of the surrealist movement in France. Evidently, the focus here is narrow, the goal being to give clearer definition to the intellectual state of a young man emerging from doubt--and so from self-doubt--into renewed confidence in his poetic calling.

Book The Routledge Companion to Absurdist Literature

Download or read book The Routledge Companion to Absurdist Literature written by Michael Y. Bennett and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-05-29 with total page 803 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Companion to Absurdist Literature is the first authoritative and definitive edited collection on absurdist literature. As a field-defining volume, the editor and the contributors are world leaders in this ever-exciting genre that includes some of the most important and influential writers of the twentieth century, including Samuel Beckett, Harold Pinter, Edward Albee, Eugene Ionesco, Jean Genet, and Albert Camus. Ever puzzling and always refusing to be pinned down, this book does not attempt to define absurdist literature, but attempts to examine its major and minor players. As such, the field is indirectly defined by examining its constituent writers. Not only investigating the so-called “Theatre of the Absurd,” this volume wades deeply into absurdist fiction and absurdist poetry, expanding much of our previous sense of what constitutes absurdist literature. Furthermore, long overdue, approximately one-third of the book is devoted to marginalized writers: black, Latin/x, female, LGBTQ+, and non-Western voices.

Book Dada and Beyond Volume 2

    Book Details:
  • Author : Elza Adamowicz
  • Publisher : Rodopi
  • Release : 2015-06-24
  • ISBN : 9401208646
  • Pages : 261 pages

Download or read book Dada and Beyond Volume 2 written by Elza Adamowicz and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International, iconoclastic, inventive, born out of the institutionalised madness of the First World War, Dada erupted in cities throughout Europe and the USA, creating shock waves that offended polite society and destabilised the cultural and political status quo. In spite of its sporadic and ephemeral character, its rich and diverse legacy is still powerfully felt nearly a century later. Following on from Dada and Beyond Volume 1: Dada Discourses, the sixteen essays in this collection provide critical examinations of Dada, placing particular emphasis on the ongoing impact of its creative output. The chapters examine its pivotal figures as well as its more peripheral protagonists, their different geographic locations, and the extraordinary diversity of their practices that included poetry, painting, printmaking, dance, performance, theatre, textiles, readymades, photomontage and cinema. As the book’s authors reveal, Dada not only anticipates Surrealism but also foreshadows an extraordinary array of more recent tendencies including action painting, conceptual art, outsider art, performance art, environmental and land art. In its privileging of chance and automatism, its rejection of formal artistic institutions, its subversive exploitation of mass media and its constant self-reconstitution and self-redefinition, Dada deserves to be seen as a cultural phenomenon that is still powerfully relevant in the twenty-first century.
