Book Different Slants on Grammaticalization

Download or read book Different Slants on Grammaticalization written by Sylvie Hancil and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2023-07-15 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume on grammaticalization focuses on new theoretical and methodological challenges underpinning language change. It provides new approaches and insights deepening our understanding of the cognitive, pragmatic, and socio-cultural mechanisms that trigger the formation and the change of grammars. In this volume, grammaticalization is dealt with diachronically, synchronically and as a by-product of dialogic interaction. Another key feature of this book is language diversity; as it includes studies on language families ranging from Niger-Congo, Koreanic, Japonic, Sino-Tibetan to Germanic and Romance. The novel aspects of grammaticalization addressed are new slants on the fundamental debate about grammaticalization as expansion vs reduction; the grammatical formation of ideophones; the semantic domain of fear as a source and a trigger of grammatical change, and many other aspects of semantic and morphosyntactic development.

Book Social Lives in Language Sociolinguistics and multilingual speech communities

Download or read book Social Lives in Language Sociolinguistics and multilingual speech communities written by Miriam Meyerhoff and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2008-09-26 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a synthetic approach to language variation and language ideologies in multilingual communities. Although the vast majority of the world’s speech communities are multilingual, much of sociolinguistics ignores this internal diversity. This volume fills this gap, investigating social and linguistic dimensions of variation and change in multilingual communities. Drawing on research in a wide range of countries (Canada, USA, South Africa, Australia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu), it explores: connections between the fields of creolistics, language/dialect contact, and language acquisition; how the study of variation and change, particularly in cases of additive bilingualism, is central to understanding social and linguistic issues in multilingual communities; how changing language ideologies and changing demographics influence language choice and/or language policy, and the pivotal place of multilingualism in enacting social power and authority, and a rich array of new empirical findings on the dynamics of multilingual speech communities.

Book The Noun Phrase in Classical Latin Prose

Download or read book The Noun Phrase in Classical Latin Prose written by Olga Spevak and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-01-09 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The internal ordering of Latin noun phrases is very flexible in comparison with modern European languages. Whereas there are a number of studies devoted to the variable placement of modifiers, The Noun Phrase in Classical Latin Prose proposes an entirely new approach: a discussion of the semantic and syntactic properties of both nouns and modifiers. Using recent insights in general linguistics, it argues that not only pragmatic factors but also semantic factors (whether we are dealing with an inherent property, the author’s assessment, or a further specification of a referent) are responsible for the internal ordering of Latin noun phrases. Additionally, this book discusses prepositional phrases functioning as modifiers, and appositions, which have received little attention in the literature.

Book Using Corpora in Contrastive and Translation Studies

Download or read book Using Corpora in Contrastive and Translation Studies written by Richard Xiao and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-06-12 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The corpus-based approach has developed into a well established paradigm in translation studies and has been recognised as a principal reason for the revival of contrastive linguistics since the 1990s, while corpus-based contrastive and translation studies have in turn significantly expanded the scope of corpus linguistics. This book features a selection of twenty-three papers from the 2008 meeting of Using Corpora in Contrastive and Translation Studies (UCCTS), an international conference series launched to provide an international forum for the exploration of theoretical and practical issues pertaining to the creation and use of corpora in contrastive and translation studies. The papers in this collection represent the latest developments in corpus-based translation studies, corpus-based contrastive studies, parallel corpus development and bilingual lexicography. They are useful resources for researchers as well as postgraduates and their supervisors in translation studies, comparative and contrastive linguistics, corpus linguistics, and computational linguistics.

Book Analyses linguistiques sur corpus Subordination et insubordination en fran ais

Download or read book Analyses linguistiques sur corpus Subordination et insubordination en fran ais written by DEBAISIEUX Jeanne-Marie and published by Lavoisier. This book was released on 2013-05-01 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Linguistic and Sociolinguistic Perspectives of Youth Language Practices in Africa

Download or read book Linguistic and Sociolinguistic Perspectives of Youth Language Practices in Africa written by G. Atindogbe and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2019-11-16 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the demographic explosion of young people in major African cities, we are witnessing the emergence of youth languages and new speech forms. In search of well-being, these young people, plagued by poverty, social injustice, unemployment and idleness, invent linguistic codes that allow them to find themselves. The linguistic and sociolinguistic description of these youth languages is the object of this volume. The contributions inform on the statutes and functions of the youth languages of Africa, their forms and structures, their representations, and envisage perspectives and prospective didactics.
