Book The Complete Story of the Grail

Download or read book The Complete Story of the Grail written by Chrétien (de Troyes) and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 2015 with total page 637 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mysterious and haunting Grail makes its first appearance in literature in Chrétien de Troyes' Perceval at the end of the twelfth century. But Chrétien never finished his poem, leaving an unresolved story and an incomplete picture of the Grail. It was, however, far too attractive an idea to leave. Not only did it inspire quite separate works; his own unfinished poem was continued and finally completed by no fewer than four other writers. The Complete Story of the Grail is the first ever translation of the whole of the rich and compelling body of tales contained in Chrétien's poem and its four Continuations, which are finally attracting the scholarly attention they deserve. Besides Chrétien's original text, there are the anonymous First Continuation (translated here in its fullest version), the Second Continuation attributed to Wauchier de Denain, and the intriguing Third and Fourth Continuations - probably written simultaneously, with no knowledge of each other's work - by Manessier and Gerbert de Montreuil. Two other poets were drawn to create preludes explaining the background to Chrétien's story, and translated here also are their works: The Elucidation Prologue and Bliocadran. Only in this, The Story of the Grail's complete form, can the reader appreciate the narrative skill and invention of the medieval poets and their surprising responses to Chrétien's theme - not least their crucial focus on the knight as a crusader. Equally, Chrétien's original poem was almost always copied in conjunction withone or more of the Continuations, so this translation represents how most medieval readers would have encountered it. Nigel Bryant's previous translations from Medieval French include Perlesvaus - the High Bookof the Grail, Robert de Boron's trilogy Merlin and the Grail, the Medieval Romance of Alexander, The True Chronicles of Jean le Bel and Perceforest.

Book Derivative with a New Parameter

Download or read book Derivative with a New Parameter written by Abdon Atangana and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2015-09-18 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Derivative with a New Parameter: Theory, Methods and Applications discusses the first application of the local derivative that was done by Newton for general physics, and later for other areas of the sciences. The book starts off by giving a history of derivatives, from Newton to Caputo. It then goes on to introduce the new parameters for the local derivative, including its definition and properties. Additional topics define beta-Laplace transforms, beta-Sumudu transforms, and beta-Fourier transforms, including their properties, and then go on to describe the method for partial differential with the beta derivatives. Subsequent sections give examples on how local derivatives with a new parameter can be used to model different applications, such as groundwater flow and different diseases. The book gives an introduction to the newly-established local derivative with new parameters, along with their integral transforms and applications, also including great examples on how it can be used in epidemiology and groundwater studies. - Introduce the new parameters for the local derivative, including its definition and properties - Provides examples on how local derivatives with a new parameter can be used to model different applications, such as groundwater flow and different diseases - Includes definitions of beta-Laplace transforms, beta-Sumudu transforms, and beta-Fourier transforms, their properties, and methods for partial differential using beta derivatives - Explains how the new parameter can be used in multiple methods

Book Food Insecurity in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Food Insecurity in Sub Saharan Africa written by Lisa C. Smith and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2006 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In addressing the pervasive problem of hunger in the developing world, reliable information on food insecurity is essential for effectively targeting assistance, developing interventions, and evaluating progress. Yet arriving at an accurate and comparable measure of food insecurity remains a challenge. This report introduces new estimates of food insecurity based on food acquisition data collected as part of national household expenditure surveys (HESs). The report explores the extent and location of food insecurity, the scientific merit of estimates derived from HES food data, the differences between HES-based estimates and those reported by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and-ultimately-how HES data can be used to improve the accuracy of the FAO estimates currently used to monitor progress toward reducing hunger

Book General Relativity and Gravitation

Download or read book General Relativity and Gravitation written by B. Bertotti and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1984-09-30 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tenth International Conference on General Relativity and Gravitation (GR10) was held from July 3 to July 8, 1983, in Padova, Italy. These Conferences take place every three years, under the auspices of the International Society on General Relativity and Gravitation, with the purpose of assessing the current research in the field, critically discussing the prog ress made and disclosing the points of paramount im portance which deserve further investigations. The Conference was attended by about 750 scientists active in the various subfields in which the current research on gravitation and general relativity is ar ticulated, and more than 450 communications were sub mitted. In order to fully exploit this great occur rence of experience and creative capacity, and to pro mote individual contributions to the collective know ledge, the Conference was given a structure of work shops on the most active topics and of general sessions in which the Conference was addressed by invited speakers on general reviews or recent major advance ments of the field. The individual communications were collected in a two-volume publication made available to the participants upon their arrival and widely distributed to Scientific Institutions and Research Centres.
