Book excerpt: Le modèle théorique de la propagation des ondes de pression dans un fluide visqueux présenté ici se distingue des précédents modèles par la prise en compte de la dynamique de parois présentant un caractère viscoélastique. Dans cette analyse, la linéarisation des équations de la dynamique du fluide et du mouvement de la paroi est effectuée en supposant que l'amplitude des ondes est petite. Cette hypothèse permet de négliger, non seulement les termes convectifs des équations de l'hydrodynamique, mais également les non linéarités dans les relations de l'hydrodynamique, mais également les non linéarités dans les relations liant les contraintes aux déformations de la paroi. On obtient ainsi une équation transcendante qui traduit les propriétés de dispersion et d'atténuation des ondes dans le système. Cette équation est alors analysée numériquement, un accent particulier étant porté sur l'influence des tensions azimutales et longitudinales sur la dispersion et l'ténuation des deux modes propres de la propagation. Dans un deuxième temps, on décrit la mise en oeuvre d'un banc de simulation hydromécanique. Le montage employé permet d'engendrer des ondes de pression de formes arbitraires à l'intérieur d'un tube viscoélastique grâce à un dispositif de conception originale. L'appareillage de mesure associé comportant des capteurs de pression et de déplacement, ainsi qu'un dispositif de vélocimétrie ultrasonore, est brièvement décrit. Après vérification sur ce banc hydrodynamique du bien fondé du modèle linéarisé de la propagation des ondes de pression une méthode indirecte permettant d'accéder au comportement mécanique de la paroi est enfin proposée, méthode applicable de manière atraumatique au système cardiovasculaire. Cette méthode utilise la déformation au cours de la propagation le long du vaisseau, d'un train d'onde de pression constitué par seulement quelques périodes d'un signal sinusoïdal, de haute fréquence et de durée brève eu égard aux temps caractéristiques de la pulsation cardiaque.

His research was focused on optical pumping, statistical mechanics of quantum gases, musical acoustics and the foundations of quantum mechanics.
