Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tucson, Arizona It is worthy of note that the improvements seem due to the natural and permanent advantages which Tucson has as a business point. The city has not been boomed by outsiders, nor is its progress due wholly to what is termed new blood. Local capital has been sufficient for increased de mands, and the men who have lived in Tucson from the early day are fully imbued with the spirit of progress and have been the most important factors in the march of improvement. It is the citizens who have lived here for years who have built the most beautiful and costly residences, who conduct the largest business enterprises and who have been most prominent in the radical changes which have come over the city. They passed through the country of the Pimas, down the valley of the Santa Cruz, by the present site of Tucson, thence across to the Pima settlements on the Gila. Tucson is a Pima word, and they pronounced it Chook Son, and its meaning is said to be Black Creek. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Using a variety of methods and sources, he reveals how Spaniards, mestizos from New Spain, and Native Americans from many tribes laid the ethnic foundations for the modern city. The book also provides much insight into the general history of Spanish colonial society as it evolved in the Tucson area to 1821. . . . Dobyns, utilizing previously unpublished primary sources, allows the early inhabitants of the Tucson area to speak for themselves, and their comments add much to a very colorful and exciting but often grim story. . . . And his penetrating look at the ethnic development of early Tucson should attract attention from anyone interested in a better understanding of how the nation as a whole achieved its multi-cultural character." --The Journal of American History

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Arizona's Yesterday: Being the Narrative of John H. Cady, Pioneer Hen I first broached the matter of writing his autobiography to John H. Cady, two things had struck me particularly. One was that of all the literature about Arizona there was little that attempted to give a straight, chrono logical and intimate description of events that oc curred during the early life of the Territory, and, second, that of all the men I knew, Cady was best fitted, by reason of his extraordinary experiences, remarkable memory for names and dates, and senior ity in pioneership, to supply the work that I felt lacking. Some years ago, when I first came West, I hap pened to be sitting on the observation platform of a train bound for the orange groves of Southern California. A lady with whom I had held some slight conversation on the journey turned to me after we had left Tucson and had started on the long and somewhat dreary journey across the desert that stretches from the Old Pueblo to San Ber doo, and said. Book From Sand Creek

  • ISBN : 9780816519934
  • Pages : 100 pages

Download or read book From Sand Creek written by Simon J. Ortiz and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 1981 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The massacre of Cheyenne and Arapaho women and children by U.S. soldiers at Sand Creek in 1864 was a shameful episode in American history, and its battlefield was proposed as a National Historic Site in 1998 to pay homage to those innocent victims. Poet Simon Ortiz had honored those people seventeen years earlier in his own way. That book, from Sand Creek, is now back in print. Originally published in a small-press edition, from Sand Creek makes a large statement about injustices done to Native peoples in the name of Manifest Destiny. It also makes poignant reference to the spread of that ambition in other parts of the world--notably in Vietnam--as Ortiz asks himself what it is to be an American, a U.S. citizen, and an Indian. Indian people have often felt they have had no part in history, Ortiz observes, and through his work he shows how they can come to terms with this feeling. He invites Indian people to examine the process they have experienced as victims, subjects, and expendable resources--and asks people of European heritage to consider the motives that drive their own history and create their own form of victimization. Through the pages of this sobering work, Ortiz offers a new perspective on history and on America. Perhaps more important, he offers a breath of hope that our peoples might learn from each other: This America has been a burden of steel and mad death, but, look now, there are flowers and new grass and a spring wind rising from Sand Creek.
