Book excerpt: Old Mr. Crow was apparently not the noisiest person in the neighborhood. Any who think so must have forgotten all about Mr. Crow's knavish cousin, Jasper Jay, and it was not only in summer, either, that Jasper's shrieks and laughter woke the echoes. Farmer Green once remarked, "He reminds me of a bad boy," Johnnie Green's father said one day. "He's mischievous and destructive; and he's forever screeching and whistling. But there's something about him that I can't help liking. Maybe it's because he always has such a good time." I should let you know things don't always go his way. When you read the story you'll see what I mean. An American writer of more than forty children's books, Arthur Scott Bailey was born in St. Albans, Vermont. The Newark News stated, "Mr. Bailey centered all his plots in the animal, bird and insect worlds, weaving natural history into the stories in a way that won educator's approval without arousing the suspicions of his young readers. He made it a habit to never 'write down' to children and frequently used words beyond the average juvenile vocabulary, believing that youngsters respond to the stimulus of the unfamiliar."

Book excerpt: JASPER JAY had some queer notions in his head. One of them was that a person couldn't be happyunless he was making a great deal of noise. And if there was anything that roused Jasper's wrath, itwas the sight of some quiet, modest little neighbor who minded his own affairs and had little to say. There was one such chap who made his home in a wild grapevine that grew upon the stone wall infront of the farmhouse. His name was Mr. Chippy; and he was never known to do anybody the leastbit of harm. On the contrary, he was quitep. 7 helpful to Farmer Green's wife, for he went to thefarmhouse almost every day and cleared the crumbs off the kitchen doorstep. But Jasper Jay complained that Mr. Chippy was altogether too humble."He never says anything except 'Chip, chip, chip, chip, '" Jasper often remarked. "And his voice is sohigh and thin that anybody would think he was a little old lady, to hear him. He's too quiet to get onin the world. And as for a good time, I don't believe he ever had one in all his life."Jasper said a good many other unpleasant things about mild Mr. Chippy. And one day when thesaucy rascal had nothing better to do he flew over to the stone wall just to talk to Mr. Chippy andtell him what he thought of him."Hi there, red-head!" Jasper Jayp. 8 shouted. "Come out here on the wall! I want to see you."Mr. Chippy thrust his chestnut crowned head through the leaves of the wild grapevine. And onecould hardly say that he looked pleased. Like most people, he was not overjoyed by Jasper Jay'svisits. But he crept on top of the stone wall and chipped a how-dy-do to his caller

This book was released on 2017-06-25 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a new edition of "The Tale of Solomon Owl," originally published in 1917 by Grosset & Dunlap Publishers, New York. Part of the project Bedtime-Tales Series of classic literature, this is a new edition of the classic work published in 1917-not a facsimile reprint. Obvious typographical errors have been carefully corrected and the entire text has been reset and redesigned by Pen House Editions to enhance readability, while respecting the original edition. If you happened to catch Solomon Owl resting among the thick hemlocks near the foot of Blue Mountain, where he lives, you will think that he looks strangely like a human being. He has no "horns," or ear-tufts, such as some of the other owls wear; and his great pale face, with its black eyes, makes him seem very wise and solemn. But there is another very interesting thing about him: he has lots of forest friends. One of the most important things a parent can do for their child's education is to read to them. Arthur Scott Bailey's books will hold the child's interest, expand their intelligence and foster their love of reading. But just a few words would be enough to describe Bailey's beautiful books: Charming, sweetly humorous, simply and well-written children's books. About the Author: Arthur Scott Bailey was born in Vermont on November 15, 1877. He was an American writer, intellectual and author of more than forty children's books, including the famous "Tuck-Me-In Tales," the "Sleepy-Time Tales," and the "Slumber-Town Tales." One of his most admirable qualities was the fact that he never used language that talked down to children; instead, he frequently used words beyond their average vocabulary in an effort to broaden their knowledge. Bailey was a graduate of Harvard. He died on October 17, 1949.

This book was released on 2018-07-03 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tale of Nimble Deer Sleepy-Time Tales by Arthur Scott Bailey THE SPOTTED FAWN When Nimble's mother first looked at him she couldn't believe she would ever be able to raise him. He was such a tiny, frail, spotted thing that he seemed too delicate for a life of adventure on the wooded ridges and in the tangled swamps under the shadow of Blue Mountain. "Bless me!" cried the good lady. "This child's not much taller than an overgrown beet top and he can't be any heavier than one of Farmer Green's prize cabbages. And his legs-" she exclaimed-"his legs are no thicker than pea pods.... They'll be ready to eat in another month," she added, meaning not her child's legs, as you might have supposed, but Farmer Green's early June peas. For Nimble's mother was very fond of certain vegetables that did not grow wild in the woods. Of course young Nimble did not know what she was talking about. He had a great deal to learn. And he would have to wait until he was a good deal bigger before his mother took him on an excursion, by night, across the fields to Farmer Green's garden patch. This book was released on 2018-07-03 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tale of Grumpy Weasel Sleepy-Time Tales by Arthur Scott Bailey IA SLIM RASCAL Old Mr. Crow often remarked that if Grumpy Weasel really wanted to be of some use in the world he would spend his time at the sawmill filling knot holes in boards. "He's so slender," Mr. Crow would say, "that he can push himself into a knot hole no bigger round than Farmer Green's thumb." Naturally it did not please old Mr. Crow when Solomon Owl went out of his way one day to tell him that he was sadly mistaken. For after hearing some gossip repeat Mr. Crow's opinion Solomon Owl-the wise old bird-had given several long hoots and hurried off, though it was broad daylight, to set Mr. Crow right. "The trouble-" Solomon explained when he had found Mr. Crow on the edge of the woods-"the trouble with your plan to have Grumpy Weasel work in the sawmill is that he wouldn't keep a knot hole filled longer than a jiffy. It's true that he can fit a very small hole. But if you'd ever watched him closely you'd know that he's in a hole and out the other side so fast you can scarcely see what happens. He's entirely too active to fill the bill. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection.
