Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ritual masking is an important institution in many traditional societies and has attracted much attention from Western scholars. In 'Ritual Masks', Pernet provides a thorough survey of masks and masking traditions in Africa, Oceania, and the Americas, based on a close analysis of the literature in several languages. Pernet's approach provides him with an opportunity to examine issues of importance to the history of religion and anthropology. These include the influence of theory on the interpretation of prehistoric documents; androcentrism in anthropology and the history of religions; and Western scholarship's recurrent problems in interpreting preliterate or traditional societies.

Book Thirty Years in the South Seas

Download or read book Thirty Years in the South Seas written by Richard Parkinson and published by Sydney University Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Parkinson's Thirty Years in the South Seas was first published in 1907. In this 900-page work, Parkinson drew together and expanded on the scientific and popular papers he had been publishing since 1887, creating in the process a landmark ethnography of the Bismarck Archipelago. Parkinson moved to New Britain in 1879, only seven years after the first trader had established himself in the area. Over the next thirty years, he employed many local people on the family's expanding plantations, and travelled widely in the area, trading for produce (especially coconuts), observing traditional life, and buying artefacts for museums in Europe, USA and Australia. His travels covered the islands now known as New Britain, New Ireland, New Hanover, Manus, Buka and Bougainville, but he also collected information about the mainland of New Guinea (Kaiser Wilhelmsland). His observations covered a wide range of topics, from religious life and ceremonies to artefacts and language. It is clear he talked extensively with people - though mostly with a translator - and compared accounts. He also took many photographs, some 200 of which were included in the volume. Given the period, all his human subjects had to be posed, but the range of associated detail, probably unconsciously included, is substantial. What is particularly important about this work is the period in which it was written. While Parkinson may never have been the first contact of any local people, he was clearly among the first, and observed many societies before they were extensively incorporated into the Western economy, or missionised. Thirty Years in the South Seas is unparalleled in the literature of the Bismarck Archipelago. It is an incomparable picture of a time and place now long past.

Book Ritual Arts of Oceania New Ireland

Download or read book Ritual Arts of Oceania New Ireland written by Michael Gunn and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For twenty years now the Barbier-Mueller Museum has mounted exhibitions that have travelled throughout Europe, North America, and the Far East. To people everywhere the museum has presented its extensive collections of tribal art, brought together over three quarters of a century by three generations of a single family." "For the first time ever forty pieces of sculpture from New Ireland, selected for their beauty, rarity, and originality, are being brought out of the museum's storerooms where they have been conserved - several for over half a century - and put on display in the galleries of Paris's Foundation Bismarck, a unique event that ran from 28 April to 28 June 1997. Unlike traditional tribal sculpture, largely limited to a number of conventional forms which native craftsmen have little choice but to respect, the masks and statues of New Ireland are striking for their freedom of invention. Animal and humanlike motifs are combined with infinite variety according to rules laid down by the rites employing such objects."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Here, in absorbing detail, are the findings of such scholars as Henry Schoolcraft, who unravelled the mysteries of kinship among American Indians; Edward Westermarck, who studied gorillas to seek the origins of monogamy; Sir James Frazer, who dealt with the meaning of ritual and symbolism; Franz Boas, who explored the nature of totem and taboo; Bronislaw Malinowski, who investigated the sexual life of savages; and many other whose adventurous study has added to man’s knowledge of social man.
