Book Bovine Tuberculosis Classic Reprint

Download or read book Bovine Tuberculosis Classic Reprint written by C. M. Haring and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-25 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bovine Tuberculosis All species of domestic animals are susceptible to tuberculosis but the disease is more prevalent in cattle, hogs and poultry than in other farm animals. Tuberculosis is readily transmitted from one individual to another of the same species by direct or indirect contact. On the other hand, transmission between species varies because of the existence of three more or less distinct types of tubercle bacilli, the human, the bovine and the avian. In general, tuberculosis found in cattle is induced by the bovine tubercle bacillus. However, local, non-progressive lesions have been produced experimentally in cattle by the human type, and rare cases of small, limited lesions due to natural infection with this type have been found also in this species. Cases of uterine infection of cattle with avian tuberculosis have been reported in Denmark. Tuberculosis in poultry has been found' to be caused by the avian type of tubercle bacillus in 100 percent of all cases studied. Hogs contract tuberculosis easily when fed on infected milk or when run ning in fields with tuberculous cattle or poultry. The disease induced in swine by the bovine bacillus is often fatal, but infection with the avian bacillus very seldom becomes progressive in swine, the lesions being limited usually to the lymph nodes of the head and neck. This is true Of the cattle on the island of Jersey, where for more than a hundred years foreign cattle have not been introduced. In the United Stat-es the disease is very widely distributed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cattle Tuberculosis: A Practical Guide to the Farmer, Butcher, and Meat Inspector When the knowledge we have to-day as to the causation of the disease and of its effects is compared with that which was possessed ten years ago, it must be acknowledged that the advance has been immense. The majority of farmers and butchers then would probably have been mystified by the word 'tuberculosis, ' nor would medical officers of health have imagined that it was necessary to condemn the carcases of animals affected with the disease on the ground that there was a risk to the human subject of contracting the disease from the meat. During the interval the matter has been subjected, both on the scientific and practical side, to the close scrutiny of two Royal Commissions, and as a result of their investigations it is possible to show wherein the existing law requires to be relaxed and wherein it requires to be strengthened. It is now held that consumption in man and consumption in the lower animals is caused by the same bacillus, an organism belonging to the lowest form of vegetable life, and so small that in order to be properly examined it must be magnified four or five hundred times in all directions. When it gains access into the system, whether of animals or men - and in both it finds an entrance most readily into the lungs - it lives and multiplies on the tissues in such a way as to destroy their functions, and in the destructive process forming little lumps, or tubercles.' In man, as everyone knows, consumption of the lungs is by far the most common form in which the disease appears, and causes annually in England and Wales over deaths - more deaths, in fact, than is caused by any other disease. It is most fatal between the ages of fifteen and forty-five. This form cannot be shown to be caused by eating tuberculous meat or drinking tuberculous milk, but is due to the contagion spreading from man to man by the inhalation of dust to which is attached particles of dried sputum containing the tubercle bacillus. There are, however, many other forms in which the tubercle bacillus develops in man, and the most interesting of these, for our present purpose, is con sumption of the bowels, or tabes mesenterica.' This form occurs in children, and it is but reasonable to suppose that. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Fate of Tubercle Bacilli Outside the Animal Body Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fate of Tubercle Bacilli Outside the Animal Body The fact that one-tenth of all deaths in the human family are due to tuberculosis, and that millions of dollars worth of farm animals are lost annually from its ravages, makes any knowledge concerning the fate of tubercle bacilli outside of the animal body of great value. These questions have often come from stock owners: How long is it necessary to keep healthy stock from a field where tuber culons cattle have been previously allowed to run? How long do tubercle bacilli live in manure, in a watering trough, and in a dead tuberculous animal? And again, some authors have questioned the reports in the literature that tubercle bacilli remain alive and viru lent for periods of a year and more outside of the animal body. They have Suspected that in such cases the tubercles, found in the test animals after inoculation with such tuberculous material, kept for these long periods, had been produced by dead tubercle bacilli. It has been, in part, the purpose of this bulletin to answer these questions. The first section is devoted to brief notes on the biology of the tubercle bacillus; then a tabular review of the literature is given with brief discussions; and lastly an account of the experimental work, followed by a general discussion. The experiments deal with pure cultures of tubercle bacilli, and with those of some other bacteria for purposes of comparison as to their duration of life in sunlight and under desiccation; and with the time limit of life of tubercle bacilli in cow manure, garden soil, water, butter, and dead tuberculous animals. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human and Bovine Tuberculosis I have quoted these experiments at length for the reason that they seem Often to be overlooked, and for the further reason that they have recently been directly misquoted. Koch said in his address before the British Con gress on Tuberculosis, If one studies the older literature of the subject, and collects the reports of the numerous experiments that were made in former times by Chauveau, Gunther and Harms, Bollinger and others, who fed calves, swine and goats with the milk and pieces of the lungs Of tuber cular cattle, we find these always fell ill Of tuberculosis, whereas those that received human material with their food did not. Bollinger in 1879 inoculated a young calf in the peritoneal cavity with material from a human lung. When killed after seven months the mesentery and peritoneal covering of the spleen presented a number of tumors from the size of a pea to that of a walnut and which microscopically were identical with those found in pearly disease under natural conditions. The retro peritoneal and mesenteric glands were tuberculous also. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cattle Tuberculosis: A Practical Guide to the Agriculturist and Inspector The first edition, which I wrote in conjunction with Dr. Legge, being exhausted, I have been asked by the publishers to bring out a second one. This has prae tically involved re-writing the book, as during the interval so many fresh experiments have been made and so many new regulations introduced by foreign countries, that I have had to omit a good deal which had become anti quated in' my endeavour to bring the book up to date. My object has been to write in such a manner that the subject can be understood by those who have to deal practically with it, yet who, perhaps, have not had the necessary training to appreciate technical phraseology. Tuberculosis is one of the most serious diseases the community have to face, and a general knowledge of its contagious nature, and the methods of combating it, is particularly needful for agriculturists. I hope also that the regulations which I have inserted from foreign coun tries and the various statistical tables may be of use to those who are professionally endeavouring to get rid of this great scourge. In the text I have endeavoured to acknowledge those whose works I have quoted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
