Book excerpt: The status of the tuberculosis (TB) epidemic and progress in control of the disease has been assessed annually since 1997. This report presents an overview of progress in reducing the burden of TB in the Western Pacific Region using data on disease burden and case notification in 2008 and treatment outcomes for patients registered in 2007. The data were collected from 36 countries and areas in the Region using the WHO standard form for reporting surveillance data. The report contains data trends on estimated TB prevalence and mortality, TB notifications by age group and sex, TB/HIV co-infection and other indicators of progress, including treatment outcomes and laboratory capacity and quality. This report presents data on multidrug resistant-TB from various drug resistance surveys from the countries and areas in the Region. The specific country profiles of countries with a high burden of TB provide country-specific information on progress of TB control. TB data and trends in the Pacific island countries and areas are also included in the report. A directory of partners in the countries with a high burden of TB in the Region is appended.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Significant progress has been made in TB control in the Western Pacific Region in the past decade with a decline in the number of prevalent TB patients and the diagnosis treatment of over 10 million patients. Despite these successes, TB control programs in the Region face significant challenges, such as hard-to-reach vulnerable and marginalized groups in which the TB epidemic tends to concentrate, TB-HIV co-infection and the emergence and spread of drug-resistant TB, especially multi-drug resistant TB (MDR-TB). To mitigate these threats, the Regional Strategy to Stop Tuberculosis in the Western Pacific (2011-2015) was developed in consultation with and endorsed by Member States. The new Strategy builds upon the previous two regional strategic plans and introduces new, evidence-based interventions and technologies in response to the new and emerging challenges. The Strategy provides a reference for action to be taken, focusing on five core objectives: (1) Promoting universal and equitable access to quality TB diagnosis and treatment for all people; (2) Strengthening TB laboratory capacity; (3) Scaling up the programmatic management of drug-resistant TB; (4) Expanding TB/HIV collaborative activities; and (5) Strengthening TB program management capacity.

Building on work done at the global level, this publication contains evidence from the Western Pacific region on the relationship between poverty and TB, with the aim of assisting national policymakers and TB programme managers improve access by the poor to directly observed treatment (DOTS) for TB.
