Book excerpt: This handsome volume features 100 works from Tseng Kwong Chi's pioneering series of large-scale black-and-white self-portraits, produced from 1979 to 1989, many of which have never been published. The son of exiled Chinese nationalists, Kwong Chi was part of a 1980s New York circle that included Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf and Cindy Sherman. His ironic portraits of himself posed in a Mao suit--with a visitor badge reading SLUTFORART in front of American tourist destinations--found their way to Communist China through Western magazines smuggled into the country in the 1980s, greatly influencing China's avant-garde. Ann Magnuson, a ubiquitous downtown performer in the 80s, mused, "Just who is this visitor from that forbidden land, who is both tasting the fruits of American freedom and slyly satirizing our home of the brave?"

Book excerpt: Winner, 2019 ATHE Outstanding Book Award, given by the Association for Theatre in Higher Education Winner, 2018 Errol Hill Award in African American theater, drama, and/or performance studies, presented by the American Society for Theatre Research A new manifesto for performance studies on the art of queer of color worldmaking. After the Party tells the stories of minoritarian artists who mobilize performance to produce freedom and sustain life in the face of subordination, exploitation, and annihilation. Through the exemplary work of Nina Simone, Jorge Ignacio Cortiñas, Danh Vō, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Eiko, and Tseng Kwong Chi, and with additional appearances by Nao Bustamante, Audre Lorde, Martin Wong, Assata Shakur, and Nona Faustine, After the Party considers performance as it is produced within and against overlapping histories of US colonialism, white supremacy, and heteropatriarchy. Building upon the thought of José Esteban Muñoz alongside prominent scholarship in queer of color critique, black studies, and Marxist aesthetic criticism, Joshua Chambers-Letson maps a portrait of performance’s capacity to produce what he calls a communism of incommensurability, a practice of being together in difference. Describing performance as a rehearsal for new ways of living together, After the Party moves between slavery, the Civil Rights Movement, the first wave of the AIDS crisis, the Vietnam War, and the catastrophe-riddled horizon of the early twenty-first century to consider this worldmaking practice as it is born of the tension between freedom and its negation. With urgency and pathos, Chambers-Letson argues that it is through minoritarian performance that we keep our dead alive and with us as we struggle to survive an increasingly precarious present.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who Says, Who Shows, What Counts invites readers to think critically about how artists, artworks, and museums engage with narratives of the past. Richly illustrated and written for a general audience, this book showcases the depth and breadth of more than fifty recent acquisitions to the Block Museum of Art's contemporary collection, including a wide-ranging selection of works by Dawoud Bey, Shan Goshorn, the Guerrilla Girls, Marisol, Kerry James Marshall, Catherine Opie, Man Ray, Cindy Sherman, Thomas Struth, Tseng Kwong Chi, and Kara Walker, among other artists. The book is a companion publication to the 2021 exhibition of the same name, presented to celebrate the museum's fortieth anniversary, and both draw inspiration from a work by conceptual artist Louise Lawler, Who Says, Who Shows, Who Counts (1990), and are organized around challenging questions of historical representation within artworks and institutions: How can art help us reflect upon, question, rewrite, or reimagine the past? Who has been represented in visual art, how, and by whom? How is history etched onto a landscape or erased from it? How do museums and dominant canons of art history shape our view of history and of the past? Who Says, Who Shows, What Counts demonstrates how an academic art museum's collection can facilitate multidisciplinary connections and tell stories about issues relevant to our lives.

Book excerpt: An in-depth examination of the iconic alternative space Club 57. Located in the basement of a Polish Church at 57 St. Marks Place, Club 57 (1978-83) began as a no-budget venue for music and film exhibitions, and quickly took pride of place in a constellation of countercultural venues in downtown New York fuelled by low rents, the Reagan presidency and the desire to experiment with new modes of art, performance, fashion, music and exhibition. A centre of creative activity in the East Village, Club 57 is said to have influenced virtually every club that came in its wake. Published to accompany the first major exhibition to examine the scene-changing, interdisciplinary life of downtown New York's seminal alternative space in full, Club 57: Film, Performance, and Art in the East Village, 1978-1983 taps into the legacy of Club 57's founding curatorial staff to examine how the convergence of film, video, performance, art and curatorship in the club environment of New York in the 1970s and 1980s became a model for a new spirit of interdisciplinary endeavour. The richly illustrated publication will feature film and video stills; photographs of Club event and activities; ephemeral documents such as flyers, posters and period zines; and a robust plate section of rarely-seen artwork from the period by the likes of Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf, Tseng Kwong Chi, Kitty Brophy, Fab Five Freddy, Richard Hambleton, Dan Asher, Ellen Berkenblit and John Sex.

Book excerpt: "One day a writer becomes convinced that the artistic avantgardes of the last five decades present a tapestry of incidents as fascinating and unlikely as any collection of myths or legends. Thinking more of Kafka's Parables than Vasari's Lives of the Artists, he composes a series of micro-narratives celebrating the mystery and ingeniousness of these human activities which, for lack of a better term, we call "contemporary art."-- Back cover.

Book Keith Haring Jean Michel Basquiat

Download or read book Keith Haring Jean Michel Basquiat written by Dieter Buchhart and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2022-02-08 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exploration of the personal and artistic connections between two icons of twentieth-century art Keith Haring (1958–1990) and Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988) changed the art world of the 1980s through their idiosyncratic imagery, radical ideas, and complex sociopolitical commentary. Each artist invented a distinct visual language, employing signs, symbols, and words to convey strong messages in unconventional ways, and each left an indelible legacy that remains a force in contemporary visual and popular culture. Offering fascinating new insights into the artists’ work, Keith Haring | Jean-Michel Basquiat reveals the many intersections among Haring and Basquiat’s lives, ideas, and practices. This lavishly illustrated volume brings together more than two hundred images—works created in public spaces, paintings, sculptures, objects, works on paper, photographs, and more. These rich visuals are accompanied by essays and interviews from renowned scholars, artists, and art critics, exploring the reach and range of Haring and Basquiat’s influence. Keith Haring | Jean-Michel Basquiat provides a valuable look at two artistic peers and boundary breakers whose tragically short but prolific careers left their marks on the art world and beyond.
