Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trying It on Beldon: A Comedy in Two Acts Mr. Beldon (with a disgusted air). Here I am, home for a week, probably. I wish Perkins and the others hadn't backed out about going camping for a few days. I wanted to go, but should hardly care to try it alone. Yet a vacation in the house is not exactly what I bargained for. How I am going to stand it, I don't know. I hear enough nights and mornings of the imaginary ailments of this family without having to endure it all day. It's a grunt or a groan from one or the other all the time. There's Maria, who is always ailing; Aunt Sophronia is never quite well; my son Oliver is not strong; while even Priscilla, the servant, has more poor days than good ones. If I thought they were really ill, I should feel sorry for them, but it's my belief that they-just mope around the house and worry over their little ailments until they assume gigantic proportions. They are constantly running to doctors, and constantly taking medicine. If they would go out every day and take a dose of pure air, I'm sure that their complaints would vanish like the dew. But they're all afraid of catching cold - that is, all but Jessie, dear girl! who is the only healthy one among them. You don't catch her moping in the house. No, indeed, she knows what is good for her - of course, so far as her health is concerned. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1940s. Life in Grimm City can be just as fabulous as it is dangerous. But it's not a place that can be found on any map. Welcome to a world of gun-toting, hard-drinking, cigarette-smoking fairies, elves, dwarfs, shifters, and witches, as well as human beings. Welcome to Noir Fairy Tales. Beldon Chase and Aura Dagger, of Chase and Dagger Detective Agency, are hired by Estin Ragg, a troll whose brother, Durif, was discovered dead under the 82nd Street Bridge. The coroner calls it a suicide, but Estin swears it was murder. The cops seem to be sitting on their hands because he’s a troll, and everyone knows how much trolls are castigated and despised in the realm. Aura and Beldon are partners. He’s an ex-cop who was framed for something he didn’t do and kicked off the force. Soon after hanging out the shingle of his detective agency, he found Aura homeless in the streets after the death of her father. Something about the young woman touched him deep inside, and he took her in and trained her how to be a gumshoe. They’re in love with each other, but it’s Beldon who’s put the skids on their relationship from becoming anything more than professional. Mostly because he's a Static, a man-beast unable to convert completely into a man or an animal. As Bel and Aura are digging through clues as to whether or not someone killed Durif Ragg, their relationship comes to a head. Aura wants a commitment from Beldon. He would do anything to give it to her, but his own insecurities are holding him back. Things eventually reach a breaking point when they discover who is actually behind Ragg’s death, and why. Which culminates in Aura giving Beldon a choice—either they make this a permanent partnership in all ways, or she takes a hike, leaving him and the detective agency.

Book excerpt: She moved her sights over to the parson, then to Evans, then to Muller. They fit the description Reese had given her before he died. These were the ones; if by some fluke they weren’t her attackers, her father’s killers, too bad, she thought. If that was the case, they had simply picked the wrong day to come calling. Her sights homed onto Muller, the one farthest away, the one most likely to get atop his horse and make a run for it. She rested the sights there and waited, breathing slowly, calmly. Strange, she thought, how not long ago she had looked for the slightest reason not to kill these men, these men who had violated her, who had taken her father’s life, and in that sense destroyed hers. But that had changed. Now, if they fit the description, or matched the names, or came close to doing either, she wanted them dead. The killing had begun. The quicker they were dead, the sooner she could live in a home of her own—something she’d never had. And more than that, she could hold her head up and live there in peace, like regular, everyday folks—something she’d never known. A tear glistened in her eye, but there was no time to wipe it away. She wouldn’t let it affect her aim. *Preview of Ralph Cotton's Wolf Valley at the end of this book.
