Book Barriers to Entailment

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gillian K. Russell
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2023-09-28
  • ISBN : 0192874837
  • Pages : 316 pages

Download or read book Barriers to Entailment written by Gillian K. Russell and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-09-28 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A barrier to entailment exists if you can't get conclusions of a certain kind from premises of another. One of the most famous barriers in philosophy is Hume's Law, which says that you can't get normative conclusions from descriptive premises, or in slogan form: you can't get an ought from an is. This barrier is highly controversial, and many famous counterexamples were proposed in the last century. But there are other barriers which function almost as philosophical platitudes: no Universal conclusions from Particular premises, no Future conclusions from premises about the Past, and no claims that attribute Necessity from premises that merely tell us how things happen to be in the Actual world. Barriers to Entailment proposes a unified logical account of five barriers that have played important roles in philosophy, in the process showing how to diagnose proposed counterexamples and arguing that the case for Hume's Law is as strong as that for the platitudinous barriers. The first two parts of the book employ techniques from formal logic, but present them in an accessible way, suitable for any reader with some background in first-order model theory (of the kind that might be taught in a first class in logic). Gillian Russell introduces tense, modal, indexical, and deontic formal logics, but always avoids unneeded complexity. Each barrier is connected to broader philosophical topics: universality, time, necessity, context-sensitivity, and normativity. Russell brings out under-recognised connections between the domains and lays the groundwork for further work at the intersections. The last part of the book transposes the formal work to informal barrier theses in the philosophy of language, in the process doing new work on the concept of logical consequence, and providing new responses to proposed informal counterexamples to Hume's Law which employ hard-to-formalise tools from natural language, such as speech acts and thick normative expressions.

  • Author : Bediuzzaman Said Nursi
  • Publisher : IUR Press
  • Release :
  • ISBN : 9491898280
  • Pages : 1008 pages

Download or read book The Words written by Bediuzzaman Said Nursi and published by IUR Press. This book was released on with total page 1008 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Words is the first volume of the Risale-i Nur and consists of thirty-three independent parts or Words, which explain and prove aspects of the fundamental matters of belief. These consist of such matters as God s existence and unity, the manifestation of the Divine Names and attributes in creation, the resurrection of the dead and the hereafter, prophethood, the miraculousness of the Qur’an, the angels, the immortality of man s spirit, Divine Determining (fate or destiny), together with such questions as the true nature of man and the universe, and man s need to worship God. Each subject is explained with comparisons and allegories, and demonstrated with reasoned arguments and logical proofs. The most profound aspects of the truths of belief, which were formerly studied only by advanced scholars, are explained in such a way that everyone, even those to whom the subject is new, may understand without difficulty. This work answers brilliantly the attacks made on the Qur’an in the name of science and philosophy, and demonstrates the rationality of belief in God and logical absurdity of denial. It shows too that man s happiness and salvation both in this world and the next lie only in belief in God and knowledge of God.

Thiessen discusses the immoral practices and attitudes that are sometimes associated with evangelism and then turns his insightful attention to a better way of approaching the subject. Should we try to bring people to Christ or not? In a multi-cultural world evangelism is often under attack, with those seeking to evangelise sometimes being branded arrogant, ignorant, hypocritical and meddlesome. Against such a backdrop this unique book asks what sort of evangelism is ethical in a liberal, post-Christian society.

Book Healthy Christian Minds

  • Author : Elmer John Thiessen
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2024-09-19
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 225 pages

Download or read book Healthy Christian Minds written by Elmer John Thiessen and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-09-19 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in polarizing times. In this book Elmer Thiessen dares to suggest that the solution to the deep divides in our contemporary world and in the church is not to be found in more information, more education, more rationality, or more critical thinking. Instead, we need to cultivate intellectual virtues, such as the love of knowledge and truth, intellectual humility, and committed openness. The penultimate chapter treats intellectual virtues that are more relational in nature—intellectual forbearance, fairmindedness, and intellectual courage. The book explores the biblical and theological grounding of each intellectual virtue and reveals its practical importance for our fractious times, making use of concrete examples throughout. Each of the central chapters begins with a questionnaire aimed at promoting self-examination and stimulating reflection about the virtues and vices under consideration. This is a book for the thoughtful Christian reader aimed at transforming the way we think.

Book Christian Meat for Christian Muscles

Download or read book Christian Meat for Christian Muscles written by Sandtorock and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being strong in the Lord is essential for successful Christian living. This is the underlying premise of Christian Meat for Christian Muscles. Strength in the Lord means that every area of our lives will benefit from a good dose of spiritual nutrition with Jesus as the main course. How so? Our self esteem can benefit, our character can benefit, our wisdom can benefit; and so to can our faith, our love and our appreciation of Christian values. It will require strength to lay hold of these spiritual treasures, because there is a mighty battle on to stop us. But thankfully spiritual strength is dispensed directly from the Lord. Spiritual nutrition from Jesus Christ is what He meant when He himself said unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. (John 6:53-54 NIV) Of course Hes talking about His own gospel which has the power to save us, strengthen us and make us worthy of His name, and of Gods mighty Kingdom. This book will examine pivotal verses that facilitate the strengthening process. See sandtorock.com for more info on this important topic
