Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To open the Book of Psalms is to enter the world of God. To read the Psalms is to read the words of God and hear the words of these ancient people in response to this God who has graciously drawn them into an eternal covenant. The Book of Psalms is one continuous conversation that ranges over many centuries—perhaps nearly a millennium—between the God of Israel and the people of Israel; or more accurately, the God of glory and this particular people who have been called to live life on the edge of glory as the people of God. There is no mystery to this conversation. It is all an embroidery of grace. Modern day readers may find themselves caught in the nexus between personal experience and the desire to live a life of faith on the other. These will find a voice in the Psalms. Ancient Israel strove to put their trust in the One God of All—in the face of myriad challenges throughout her long history. What we find here is a bold witness to their hard-won faith and confidence in the sheltering presence of the One God of All. This is a message that is especially timely for people who may desire the deeper dimensions of life and faith amid the inescapable incongruities and anxieties of postmodern life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this third volume of his critically acclaimed Old Testament Theology John Goldingay explores the Old Testament vision of Israel's life before God. The first volume focused on the story of God's dealings with Israel, or Israel's gospel. The second volume investigated the beliefs of Israel, or Israel's faith. Now the spotlight falls on the Old Testament's perspective on the life that Israel should live in its present and future, including its worship, prayer and spirituality, as well as its practices, attitudes and ethics before God. Goldingay sees three spheres of life giving order to Israel's vision: its life in relation to God, its life in community and the life of the individual as a self. Within these frameworks he unfurls a tapesetry that is as broad and colorful as all of life, and yet detailed in its intricate attention to the text. With this final volume John Goldingay has given us the third pillar of an Old Testament theology that is monumental in scope and yet invites us to enter through multiple doors to explore its riches. Students will profit from a semester in its courts, and ministers of the Word will find their preaching and teaching deeply enriched by wandering its halls and meditating in its chambers.

""Weaver finds in the Psalms amazing affirmations of trust in God in the midst of personal disasters that today drive many people away from the Church. While Weaver bases his readings on scholarship of the Book of Psalms he nonetheless pierces through the many conjectures about their forms, origins and provenances and finds what the lay person today faces who often lives on the boundaries of modern existence, the soul who quietly endures the worst that life can throw at a person. This book speaks to those who often quietly suffer pain and doubt to the point of despair. This is the book that speaks to those who ask the desperate question, ""Why did God let this happen?"" --from the foreword by James A. Sanders Lorne E. Book excerpt: When world-class biblical scholar Bart Ehrman first began to study the texts of the Bible in their original languages he was startled to discover the multitude of mistakes and intentional alterations that had been made by earlier translators. In Misquoting Jesus, Ehrman tells the story behind the mistakes and changes that ancient scribes made to the New Testament and shows the great impact they had upon the Bible we use today. He frames his account with personal reflections on how his study of the Greek manuscripts made him abandon his once ultraconservative views of the Bible. Since the advent of the printing press and the accurate reproduction of texts, most people have assumed that when they read the New Testament they are reading an exact copy of Jesus's words or Saint Paul's writings. And yet, for almost fifteen hundred years these manuscripts were hand copied by scribes who were deeply influenced by the cultural, theological, and political disputes of their day. Both mistakes and intentional changes abound in the surviving manuscripts, making the original words difficult to reconstruct. For the first time, Ehrman reveals where and why these changes were made and how scholars go about reconstructing the original words of the New Testament as closely as possible. Ehrman makes the provocative case that many of our cherished biblical stories and widely held beliefs concerning the divinity of Jesus, the Trinity, and the divine origins of the Bible itself stem from both intentional and accidental alterations by scribes -- alterations that dramatically affected all subsequent versions of the Bible.

This book was released on 2008 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first chapter of this book deals with the history of Christian mission activity in Western Kenya and points out the particularities of the missionaries as well as the mission churches. Within this context, the history of the African Independent Churches (AICs) is placed, which appear as a mergence of various traditions and motivations: the pursuit of independence from the colonial power and the mission churches connected with it, the preservation of traditional African religiousness and the absorption of Pentecostal piety with its heavy emphasis on the gifts of the spirit. In the following chapters the stance of AICs towards involvement in political debates is explored and discussed. This is done on the basis of semi-structured interviews with local leaders as well as bishops and representatives of church networks. Another topic is the contribution of AICs to the inculturation of the Christian faith in the African context - especially in view of the academic African Theology and the Pentecostal Churches. The last part of the book deals with the question of the future of the AICs and their ecumenical relations - this is done in the context of the rapid expansion Neo-Pentecostal groups and movements.

Book Revive the Oracles of God

Download or read book Revive the Oracles of God written by Ozakieoniso Charlie and published by WestBowPress. This book was released on 2013-05-08 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I believe that the next revival will come on a personal level for everyone who will pick up his or her bible daily to read, study, and meditate. Engage in personal times of prayer day and night; move from selfish Christianity to the place of personal service of others and the will and purpose of the Lord. Throughout the Bible, we see the Lord moved in the situation of his people, when they return to the ordinances of His word for guidance, in correction of their ways, or even for a new beginning, when they have engaged God in prayer and when they have stepped out to do his will. I believe that these three constants of our Christian faith also double as oracles of God, because in them the power of God is made alive; divine answers, messages, and burdens are granted to those who will diligently ask, seek, and knock. I believe that these three are oracles in their individual standings, but never to be practiced individually. Rather, when all three are embraced as a lifestyle, there will be a threefold release of the power of God. Revival will break forth within individuals and hence the entire body of Christ. This book is a holy cry for the people of God to avail themselves of these one-on-one connections with the almighty: Through his oracles.
