Book excerpt: Perfect for enthusiasts of women's stories, postwar photo-journalism and art. This compelling narrative encompasses a mother's- and her daughter's-first-person accounts of struggle: the American wife finding her place in the rubble of battle-torn Germany, and the daughter relaying her version of the same story. Virginia Fontaine was brought up with all the moral fortitude of her Midwest German immigrant parents but also went against the norms by marrying an artist and agreeing to live in Germany in 1946. There, Virginia fought for her status as a problem solver, photographer, art curator, and correspondent of her experiences amid her ever-changing constellation of artists and friends who survived the war. Working with the military wasn't always easy either. In this part personal history, part art survey, readers are given a front-row seat to Virginia's artistic pursuits and cultivations as well as her resilience amid the challenges and times of postwar Europe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The consulting industry has been on a roller-coaster ride since the heady days of the 1990s. After a recession triggered by the dotcom crash, it's now growing rapidly again--but in a market that has changed beyond all recognition. Fees are down, buying is centralized and many clients are ex-consultants who know all the tricks of the trade. It's a hostile environment in which great personal qualities are no longer enough--consultants need trusted firms behind them, helping them deliver results. This unique journey through the new consulting terrain looks at how leading consulting firms worldwide create a platform for success: what values they need; who they recruit and what recruitment processes work best; how they keep their finger on the pulse of the market; how they match the right people to particular jobs. "This book is essential for both client and consultant to understand the pitfalls to avoid and the conditions neccessary for successin todays' complex, multi faceted project environment." -- Peter Hill, Chief Executive, Management Consultancies Association "The Trusted Firm presents a compelling blueprint for the consulting firm of the future. Book The Trusted Leader

Download or read book The Trusted Leader written by Terry Newell and published by CQ Press. This book was released on 2011-08-04 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improving government on a macro level is only possible with public managers who herald change on a micro level. While many studies of government reform focus on new policies and programs, these public managers—building relationships built on trust—are the real drivers behind many successful reforms. In this second edition, chapter authors once again draw on their real-world experience to demonstrate the importance of values-based leadership. With new research and lessons from the first two years of the Obama administration, chapters focus on the concrete ways in which leaders build effective relationships and trust, while also improving themselves, their organizations, and those they coach. Surveying agencies both horizontally and vertically, The Trusted Leader also addresses how public managers can collaborate with political appointees and the legislative branch, while still engaging with citizens to create quality customer experiences. Two brand-new chapters focus on: “Effective Conversations”—the importance of one-on-one conversations to building trust, with a model for having such conversations. “The Diversity Opportunity”—the need to effectively lead across a diverse workforce and a diverse society to build trust in both realms. With the addition of chapter headnotes, the editors provide necessary context, while the new “Resources for Further Learning” feature guides readers toward additional print and web resources.

  • Author : Rosamond Rhodes

Download or read book The Trusted Doctor written by Rosamond Rhodes and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-04-06 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Common morality has been the touchstone of medical ethics since the publication of Beauchamp and Childress's Principles of Biomedical Ethics in 1979. Rosamond Rhodes challenges this dominant view by presenting an original and novel account of the ethics of medicine, one deeply rooted in the actual experience of medical professionals. She argues that common morality accounts of medical ethics are unsuitable for the profession, and inadequate for responding to the particular issues that arise in medical practice. Instead, Rhodes argues that medicine's distinctive ethics should be explained in terms of the trust that society allows to the profession. Trust is the core and starting point of Rhodes' moral framework, which states that the most basic duty of doctors is to "seek trust and be trustworthy." Building from this foundation, Rhodes explicates the sixteen specific duties that doctors take on when they join the profession, and demonstrates how her view of these duties is largely consistent with the codes of medical ethics of medical societies around the world. She then explains why it is critical for physicians to develop the attitudes or "doctorly" virtues that comprise the character of trustworthy doctors and buttress physicians' efforts to fulfil their professional obligations. Her book's presentation of physicians' duties and the elements that comprise a doctorly character, together add up to a cohesive and comprehensive description of what medical professionalism really entails. Rhodes's analysis provides a clear understanding of medical professionalism as well as a guide for doctors navigating the ethically challenging situations that arise in clinical practice
