Download or read book Trust Me I m Not A Politician written by Dorothy Byrne and published by Short Books. This book was released on 2019-11-14 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an age where more British people believe in aliens than trust our politicians, Dorothy Byrne asks the question: what went wrong and how can our trust in democracy and public life be regained? In this scintillating essay, nothing and no one escapes Byrne's razor-sharp wit as she takes on the politicians avoiding rigorous journalistic scrutiny, explores the pitfalls of impartiality, imagines what Plato might say to Trump – and calls out plenty of sexist bastards along the way. This is a ferocious, frank, and often wildly funny attempt to separate the truth from the lies at a time of national crisis.

Book Negotiating Change

Download or read book Negotiating Change written by Mike Lotzof and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-09-06 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behaviour change programs fail more often than they succeed. Failure is avoidable, but not if we keep attempting change the same way. Negotiating Change is the culmination of decades of work with global corporations in ethics, communications, behaviour change and regulatory and social compliance. The book provides a text for corporate leaders, their advisors and academics and students from several disciplines to explain why the current approach to behaviour change and compliance fails, and documents why the author’s approach has been successful in more than 60 countries. The book synthesises research insights from evolutionary psychology, behavioural sciences, neuroscience and neurochemistry into a practical guide. It explains why systems for behavioural guidance and control based on beliefs, religions, ethics, cultures and the law are ineffective in our globalised, hyper-connected, multi-cultural world. The author proposes that harm, first introduced by Hippocrates to guide the practice of medicine, provides a more useful linguistic model to engage. Harm and the Harm Principles provide an objective, independent and universal measure for assessing behaviour, applying equally regardless of race, religion, gender, age or status. Harm is culturally neutral and operates independently of laws, philosophies or codes of conduct. Harm transcends geography and time. Corporations are particularly vulnerable as they operate not just across jurisdictions and cultures, but their behaviour is influenced by the very nature of incorporation, corporate structure and stock-market pressure. Negotiating Change contains tools for boards and senior executives who want to build a more trustworthy organisation. It will not stop bad people doing bad things, but at least the self-righteous mask of legality will be removed.

Book Political Corruption in a World in Transition

Download or read book Political Corruption in a World in Transition written by Jonathan Mendilow and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2019-10-31 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that the mainstream definitions of corruption, and the key expectations they embed concerning the relationship between corruption, democracy, and the process of democratization, require reexamination. Even critics who did not consider stable institutions and legal clarity of veteran democracies as a cure-all, assumed that the process of widening the influence on government decision making and implementation allows non-elites to defend their interests, define the acceptable sources and uses of wealth, and demand government accountability. This had proved correct, especially insofar as ‘petty corruption’ is involved. But the assumption that corruption necessarily involves the evasion of democratic principles and a ‘market approach’ in which the corrupt seek to maximize profit does not exhaust the possible incentives for corruption, the types of behaviors involved (for obvious reasons, the tendency in the literature is to focus on bribery), or the range of situations that ‘permit’ corruption in democracies. In the effort to identify some of the problems that require recognition, and to offer a more exhaustive alternative, the chapters in this book focus on corruption in democratic settings (including NGOs and the United Nations which were largely so far ignored), while focusing mainly on behaviors other than bribery.

Book The Poison of Politics

Download or read book The Poison of Politics written by Rex Reed and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2011-02 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Too many of us often adopt the attitude that 'they all do it,' meaning that all politicians lie, so our job is to pick the one who is the most charismatic or is better at appearing to be truthful compared to his opponent. And unfortunately, it seems that believability is not that important anymore. What would our Founding Fathers think of our current political system? As our leaders in Washington D.C. become increasingly ineffective, it becomes easier to envision the frustrations of great leaders like Washington, Jefferson, and Madison, observing our situation with disdain. Above all else, these men of wisdom were dedicated to the ideas of personal responsibility and integrity. What a far cry from the behavior seen today by the people elected to represent each one of us. Thankfully, the Founding Fathers provided us with the means to change our fortunes: by electing new leaders every two, four, or six years, we, the citizens of the United States, have the power to save ourselves from The Poison of Politics. Author Rex Reed examines politicians from across the spectrum, using their own words to show their inconsistencies, their lies, and their complicit relationship with the national media. Through the exchange of ideas, the power of education, and the light of honesty, The Poison of Politics will stir the hearts and minds of all patriotic Americans to rise up and reclaim the role the Founding Father's intended.

Book The Politics of Big Fantasy

Download or read book The Politics of Big Fantasy written by John C. McDowell and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-07-16 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing critical attention to a particular set of science fiction and fantasy films--Larry and Andy Wachowski's The Matrix, George Lucas' Star Wars saga, and Joss Whedon's Avengers--this book utilizes a wide-ranging set of critical tools to illuminate their political ideologies, while also examining any resistant and complicating turns or byways the films may provide. What they all have in common ideologically is that they--or at least the genres they belong to--tend to be regarded as belonging to politically conservative frames of sociocultural reference. With the Star Wars saga, however, this idea is shown to be superficial and weak.

Book Political Tone

  • Author : Roderick P. Hart
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2013-05-14
  • ISBN : 022602329X
  • Pages : 300 pages

Download or read book Political Tone written by Roderick P. Hart and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013-05-14 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s not what you say, but how you say it. Solving problems with words is the essence of politics, and finding the right words for the moment can make or break a politician’s career. Yet very little has been said in political science about the elusive element of tone. In Political Tone, Roderick P. Hart, Jay P. Childers, and Colene J. Lind analyze a range of texts—from speeches and debates to advertising and print and broadcast campaign coverage— using a sophisticated computer program, DICTION, that parses their content for semantic features like realism, commonality, and certainty, as well as references to religion, party, or patriotic terms. Beginning with a look at how societal forces like diversity and modernity manifest themselves as political tones in the contexts of particular leaders and events, the authors proceed to consider how individual leaders have used tone to convey their messages: How did Bill Clinton’s clever dexterity help him recover from the Monica Lewinsky scandal? How did Barack Obama draw on his experience as a talented community activist to overcome his inexperience as a national leader? And how does Sarah Palin’s wandering tone indicate that she trusts her listeners and is open to their ideas? By focusing not on the substance of political arguments but on how they were phrased, Political Tone provides powerful and unexpected insights into American politics.

Book How Not to Be a Politician

Download or read book How Not to Be a Politician written by Rory Stewart and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2023-09-19 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “[Rory Stewart] walked across Asia, served in British Parliament, and ran against Boris Johnson. Now he gives us his view of what’s wrong with politics, and how we can make it right.” —Adam Grant, “The 12 New Fall Books to Enrich Your Thinking” From a great writer—legendary for his expeditions into some of the world’s most forbidding places—a wise, honest, and sometimes absurdist memoir of a most remarkable journey through British politics at the breaking point Rory Stewart was an unlikely politician. He was best known for his two-year walk across Asia—in which he crossed Afghanistan, essentially solo, in the months after 9/11—and for his service, as a diplomat in Iraq, and Afghanistan. But in 2009, he abandoned his chair at Harvard University to stand for a seat in Parliament, representing the communities and farms of the Lake District and the Scottish border—one of the most isolated and beautiful districts in England. He ran as a Conservative, though he had no prior connection to the politics and there was much about the party that he disagreed with. How Not to Be a Politician is a candid and penetrating examination of life on the ground as a politician in an age of shallow populism, when every hard problem has a solution that’s simple, appealing, and wrong. While undauntedly optimistic about what a public servant can accomplish in the lives of his constituents, the book is also a pitiless insider’s exposé of the game of politics at the highest level, often shocking in its displays of rampant cynicism, ignorance, glibness, and sheer incompetence. Stewart witnesses Britain’s vote to leave the European Union and its descent into political civil war, compounded by the bad faith of his party’s leaders—David Cameron, Boris Johnson, and Liz Truss. Finally, after nine years of service and six ministerial roles, and shocked by his party’s lurch to the populist right, Stewart ran for prime minister. Stewart’s campaign took him into the lead in the opinion polls, head-to-head against Boris Johnson. How Not to Be a Politician is his effort to make sense of it all, including what has happened to politics in Britain and the world and how we can fix it. The view into democracy’s dark heart is troubling, but at every turn Stewart also finds allies and ways to make a difference. A bracing, invigorating mix of irony and love infuses How Not to Be a Politician. This is one of the most revealing memoirs written by a politician in living memory.

Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NATIONAL BOOK AWARD WINNER • NAMED ONE OF TIME’S TEN BEST NONFICTION BOOKS OF THE DECADE • PULITZER PRIZE FINALIST • NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD FINALIST • ONE OF OPRAH’S “BOOKS THAT HELP ME THROUGH” • NOW AN HBO ORIGINAL SPECIAL EVENT Hailed by Toni Morrison as “required reading,” a bold and personal literary exploration of America’s racial history by “the most important essayist in a generation and a writer who changed the national political conversation about race” (Rolling Stone) NAMED ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL BOOKS OF THE DECADE BY CNN • NAMED ONE OF PASTE’S BEST MEMOIRS OF THE DECADE • NAMED ONE OF THE TEN BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The New York Times Book Review • O: The Oprah Magazine • The Washington Post • People • Entertainment Weekly • Vogue • Los Angeles Times • San Francisco Chronicle • Chicago Tribune • New York • Newsday • Library Journal • Publishers Weekly In a profound work that pivots from the biggest questions about American history and ideals to the most intimate concerns of a father for his son, Ta-Nehisi Coates offers a powerful new framework for understanding our nation’s history and current crisis. Americans have built an empire on the idea of “race,” a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on the bodies of black women and men—bodies exploited through slavery and segregation, and, today, threatened, locked up, and murdered out of all proportion. What is it like to inhabit a black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves from its burden? Between the World and Me is Ta-Nehisi Coates’s attempt to answer these questions in a letter to his adolescent son. Coates shares with his son—and readers—the story of his awakening to the truth about his place in the world through a series of revelatory experiences, from Howard University to Civil War battlefields, from the South Side of Chicago to Paris, from his childhood home to the living rooms of mothers whose children’s lives were taken as American plunder. Beautifully woven from personal narrative, reimagined history, and fresh, emotionally charged reportage, Between the World and Me clearly illuminates the past, bracingly confronts our present, and offers a transcendent vision for a way forward.

Book excerpt: The Tyranny of Fate Dawud al-Dajjal (David the Deceiver) describes how one very brilliant young man is able to garner local support, which soon grows into millions of supporters worldwide by merely suggesting the idea of a one-world government, which, in time, would be labeled the New World Order. Dawud graduated with a degree in political science from Columbia University at the age of seventeen. The name Dawud became known in every corner of the globe, causing upheaval between the one-world government or Dawud supporters and the traditional capitalists and/or dictators around the world. Civil wars became commonplace in nearly every country. Entire countries became no-fly zones. With the world on fire, Dawud eventually disappears as the earth disintegrates to ashes. Far-fetched? Maybe not! Who is Dawud? What is Dawud?
