Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lifelong pattern of use and abuse finally caught up with Dr. A. C. Gross when she was forty-three years old. She had been using drugs and alcohol to fix herself for as long as she could remember. Now, in You Can Trust MeIm a Doctor, Gross shares the story of her addiction and her journey to recovery. In this memoir, she describes growing up in a respectable, middle-class, Californian household where she was introduced to alcohol at a young age. She had her first taste of alcohol at age nine and first experienced being drunk at age fourteen. During her twenties, Gross tells how she continued to drink and experiment with drugs despite her rigorous studies. With her compulsive personality, excessive drinking and reckless use of pills became a constant part of everyday life. In 2004, with her physicians career in jeopardy and her family life unraveling, Gross was forced to seek help. Recovery was her next step, but it was not easy. She narrates how it took her nearly ten months to realize that recovery involved surrender of the old self to the will of God. You Can Trust MeIm a Doctor tells Grosss story of learning a new way of life.

Download or read book Ask and Tell written by Steve Estes and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2009-11-30 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Don't Ask, Don't Tell" was the directive of President Clinton's 1993 military policy regarding gay and lesbian soldiers. This official silence continued a collective amnesia about the patriotic service and courageous sacrifices of homosexual troops. Ask and Tell recovers these lost voices, offering a rich chronicle of the history of gay and lesbian service in the U.S. military from World War II to the Iraq War. Drawing on more than 50 interviews with gay and lesbian veterans, Steve Estes charts the evolution of policy toward homosexuals in the military over the past 65 years, uncovering the ways that silence about sexuality and military service has affected the identities of gay veterans. These veteran voices--harrowing, heroic, and on the record--reveal the extraordinary stories of ordinary Americans, men and women who simply did their duty and served their country in the face of homophobia, prejudice, and enemy fire. Far from undermining national security, unit cohesion, or troop morale, Estes demonstrates, these veterans strengthened the U.S. military in times of war and peace. He also examines challenges to the ban on homosexual service, placing them in the context of the wider movement for gay rights and gay liberation. Ask and Tell is an important compilation of unheard voices, offering Americans a new understanding of the value of all the men and women who serve and protect them.

The healthcare professionals who provide patient care deserve our collective interest in their humanity. Book A Cry for Help

Download or read book A Cry for Help written by Desiree and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-09-12 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My name is Desiree. Yes, I was married and divorced three times. and each divorce, I asked for my maiden name back. I am a mother of two daughters and have eight adult grandchildren and three great-granddaughters. I'm taking this time out in my life to write my story because there are so many children and adults crying out for help. They cannot afford Dr. Phil or Oprah or trust anyone enough to talk to them. At one point of time, I tried to reach out to both of them and hit a dead end each time. I always wondered how people get in touch with them. Twenty-five or more years ago, I started writing Oprah a letter when she had Ms. Erica Kane and all of the All My Children husbands on her show with her. the letter turned into a book! So I never tried to send it. I called it Will the Real Erica Kane Please Stand Up. (All the Men I Loved.) Not who loved me because I really can't tell who loved me. My journey took me to hell and back. Through all of my trials and tribulations, I had to come back to Jesus. When he said, "I will never leave nor forsake you," he meant just that. It gets hard sometimes to believe it, but when you keep hitting a brick wall and facing death in the face so many times, you start wondering, why am I still here? It's not as though we can stand in a line and pick our race or our mother and father. Wow! Would life be any different? Believe me--it's only by the grace of God that any of us are still here. We all have a purpose for being on this earth. My belief is my purpose is to encourage others to believe in yourself and trust that God really does have your back no matter what the devil throw your way. As the song says, "He paid it all." Meaning, Jesus paid for all of our sins, and I thank him for allowing me to be alive long enough to acknowledge that. So here's my story.
