Book After the Cure

Download or read book After the Cure written by Emily K. Abel and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2010-08-30 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the book jacket: Chemo Brain. Fatigue. Chronic Pain. Insomnia. Depression. These are just a few of the ongoing, debilitating symptoms that plague some breast cancer survivors long after their treatments have officially ended. After The Cure is a compelling read filled with fascinating portraits of women who are living with the aftermath of breast cancer. Having heard repeatedly that the problems are all in your head, many don't know where to turn for help. The doctors who now refuse to validate their symptoms are often the very ones they depended on to provide life-saving treatments. Sometimes family members, who provided essential support through months of chemotherapy and radiation, don't believe them. Their work lives, already disrupted by both cancer and its treatment, are further undermined by the lingering symptoms. And every symptom is a constant reminder of the trauma of diagnosis, the ordeal of treatment, and the specter of recurrence. Most narratives about surviving breast cancer end with the conclusion of chemotherapy and radiation, painting stereotypical portraits of triumphantly healthy survivors, women who not only survive but emerge better and stronger than before. After The Cure allows us to hear the voices of those who are silenced by the optimistic breast cancer culture, women who live with a broad array of health problems long after therapy ends. Here, at last, survivors step out of the shadows and speak compellingly about their real stories, giving voice to the complicated, often bittersweet realities of life after the cure.

Book excerpt: Lena an Australian Palestinian young woman got caught t in a cultural web of honour and shame, imprisoned in a violent marriage, when she tried to escape, she suffered further abuse by the legal system. The thought of being abused scared me. I said to myself, No, I am not abused. Sami is just in a bad mood. He drank too much which affected his ability to perform and that must have upset him, thereby injuring his manhood From that day on, slapping became a ritual and routine for him. I was slapped for lots or no sugar in the coffee, the breakfast ten seconds late or two seconds earlier than expected, and for the food being too warm or too cold. All of a sudden, I had a sharp pain in my chest, and I felt hard to breathe. Samis image threatening me passed in front of my eyes. I swallowed my words. I could not bring myself to say anymore. Fearing for my life, I had to tell Dad the truth. I told him what exactly happened right from the start, starting with the honeymoon and how Sami couldnt perform, how he threatened to expose me as not being a virgin, what his mother did to me, and how he used my menstrual blood to prove that he was a stud. The fact is that I am still a virgin, We arrived at the house where I would spend the next six months of my life as Samis prisoner Leila was my strong rock.. Every year, she would say, I am sure you will come back with me to Australia next year. There was always a next year for Leila: next year you will come to Australia; next year we will be together forever; next year you will start university; next year . . .. However, Leilas next year never came.

Book The Painting

    Book Details:
  • Author : MICHAEL REID
  • Publisher : Gatekeeper Press
  • Release : 2022-02-14
  • ISBN : 166292495X
  • Pages : 360 pages

Download or read book The Painting written by MICHAEL REID and published by Gatekeeper Press. This book was released on 2022-02-14 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Reid has written a powerful story for our time. Based on the events of Roberto Ramos’s astonishing life in—and eventual escape from—the island of Cuba, The Painting, is a fictionalized account of Roberto Ramos’s life from 1982 until 1992. Growing up under the Castro regime, Ramos learns over time how Fidel has betrayed the rev- olution. This is the story of Ramos’ outrage at this betrayal, and the extreme price he pays for expressing it. The brashness of his defiance is breathtaking and fuels a plot that grips the read- er in continuous suspense. The tension mounts up until the last page, where the suspense finally yields to human triumph over oppression. There is a crucial artistic element to this story as well. Along the way, and through the moment of his escape to the United States, Ramos is drawn to the works of the great Cuban masters— especially the tradition of pre-revolution Cuban painting—as an outlet for his emotions and his growing frustrations with the Castro government, a system he finds increasingly intolerable as the years pass and his distress grows. In a journey that is terrifying, yet also a triumph of the human spirit, Ramos reveals the power of one individual to fight back against an unjust political system. In doing so, he rescues his own identity, and the artistic heritage that defines him. The story of Roberto Ramos is a compelling personal tale, but the power of this book lies just as much in the telling of it. Reid captures the de- tails of a remarkable odyssey and weaves them into an expansive drama, creating a parable for our times. It’s Reid’s keen awareness of detail that shows us how to honestly value the richness of life, even amidst brutal struggles. The result is a story for every person who treasures freedom...and life itself. Book Review: "The Painting by Michael C. Reid is an exquisite non-fiction work that tells the story of the happenings in communist Cuba in a way that only someone who has experienced it can explain. It is insightful, heart-wrenching, and nothing short of thought-provoking. It follows one man's desperate attempt to break the hold of poverty on him and his family. Readers can see how the government plays a huge role in the poverty of its people. We also see political leaders whose only concern is how quickly they can line their pockets with wealth gotten from the sweat of the citizens. The storyline is particularly touching. I am impressed with the way Michael C. Reid fleshes out each of the characters in the book to the smallest detail. The conversations within the book are precisely in tune with the situation in the global scene of the 1980s. This element gives the narrative another credit for accuracy. The mix of Spanish and English is also unique. It adds spice to the conversations and the story. Also, the conversations and character responses to situations were humorous. For instance, here's Roberto's response when he is told his boat, with all its hidden treasures, will have to be scuttled: "I'm not leaving this boat. You need to tow me in or I will die with my collection." Followers of historical events will find the content of this book quite interesting. Not much is known about life within Cuba except what is gotten from state-sponsored newsreels and the odd story from any émigré who has braved the perils of the journey. Also, the information on the Cuban art scene will appeal to art lovers. There are detailed mentions of several artists whose works are worth making out the time to study. Michael C. Reid pens a masterpiece that earns my respect in terms of the presentation of the storyline. The story flows with a certain style that gets your pulse up every time you turn the pages, and the attention to detail is equally impressive." -- Sam Ibeh/Online Book Club

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The Washington Post • San Francisco Chronicle In True Believers, Kurt Andersen—the New York Times bestselling and critically acclaimed author of Heyday and Turn of the Century—delivers his most powerful and moving novel yet. Dazzling in its wit and effervescent insight, this kaleidoscopic tour de force of cultural observation and seductive storytelling alternates between the present and the 1960s—and indelibly captures the enduring impact of that time on the ways we live now. Karen Hollander is a celebrated attorney who recently removed herself from consideration for appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court. Her reasons have their roots in 1968—an episode she’s managed to keep secret for more than forty years. Now, with the imminent publication of her memoir, she’s about to let the world in on that shocking secret—as soon as she can track down the answers to a few crucial last questions. As junior-high-school kids back in the early sixties, Karen and her two best friends, Chuck and Alex, roamed suburban Chicago on their bikes looking for intrigue and excitement. Inspired by the exotic romance of Ian Fleming’s James Bond novels, they acted out elaborate spy missions pitting themselves against imaginary Cold War villains. As friendship carries them through childhood and on to college—in a polarized late-sixties America riven by war and race as well as sex, drugs, and rock and roll—the bad guys cease to be the creatures of make-believe. Caught up in the fervor of that extraordinary and uncanny time, they find themselves swept into a dangerous new game with the highest possible stakes. Today, only a handful of people are left who know what happened. As Karen reconstructs the past and reconciles the girl she was then with the woman she is now, finally sharing pieces of her secret past with her national-security-cowboy boyfriend and activist granddaughter, the power of memory and history and luck become clear. A resonant coming-of-age story and a thrilling political mystery, True Believers is Kurt Andersen’s most ambitious novel to date, introducing a brilliant, funny, and irresistible new heroine to contemporary fiction. Praise for True Believers “Funny, fiendishly smart.”—San Francisco Chronicle “A great American novel.”—Vanity Fair “A big, swinging novel . . . [a] colorful story . . . This could be the most rambunctious meeting your book club will have for a long time.”—The Washington Post “Intelligent and insightful . . . Think The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter and Atonement, a ’60s-era female Holden Caulfield. . . . Andersen is an agile storyteller. . . . [There are] witty, occasionally even profound observations about the ’60s and today.”—USA Today “So epic: Part thriller, part coming-of-age tale, the novel alternates between the present and the 1960s, capturing some of America’s most pivotal moments in history like a time capsule.”—Marie Claire “This is an ambitious and remarkable novel, wonderfully voiced, about memory, secrets, guilt, and the dangers of certitude. Moreover, it asks essential questions about what it means to be an American and, in a sense, what it means to be America.”—Booklist (starred review) “Fascinating and wisely observant.”—O: The Oprah Magazine

Book excerpt: The bestselling Gail Bowen returns with a gripping story of marriage, politics, sex, and murder. With a general election just weeks away, Joanne Kilbourn is following the campaign of Ginny Monaghan, a woman who has her eyes set on the leadership of the federal Conservative Party and whose success depends, not so much on the election-day poll, but on the outcome of a custody battle she’s fighting with her ex. Joanne thinks this is perfect material for a TV program she’s putting together on women and party politics. Happy to be back in the political fray that used to be her life during her first marriage, Joanne is soon also glad of the distraction it provides. A local call girl has been murdered — a woman whose regular clientele included several of Regina’s most prominent lawyers, including — until he met Joanne — her own husband, Zach Shreve. Her new marriage creaking under the strain of this revelation, Joanne throws herself into her project — and into finding out why the dead woman had started to threaten her clients with blackmail, an investigation that leads to the truth — and to death. In The Brutal Heart, Bowen expertly mixes the ingredients of marriage, family, politics, and murder into a constantly surprising and compulsively readable story.
