Book excerpt: This report reviews research literature pertaining to trust in automated systems. Based on the review, the report notes similarities with trust in the interpersonal domain as well as several unique dynamics & influences pertaining to trust in automated systems. Existing research has focussed primarily on trust in automation that has an executive or control function, and to a lesser extent considers trust in automation that is designed to present information to operators. Several models related to trust in automation have already been developed, and a comprehensive though preliminary model of trust in military automation is proposed. Sets of factors likely to impact the development of trust in automation are discussed, including properties of the automaton & of the operator, and properties of the context in which interaction with automation occurs. Based on the findings of the review, measures & methods to study trust in automation are considered and a program of research to study trust in automated systems is described.

Book excerpt: Automated systems perform functions that were previously executed by a human. When using automation, the role of the human changes from operator to supervisor. For effective operation, the human must appropriately calibrate trust in the automated system. Improper trust leads to misuse and disuse of the system. The responsibilities of an automated system can be described by its level of automation. This study examined the effect of varying levels of automation and accuracy on trust calibration. Thirty participants were divided into three groups based on the system's level of automation and provided with an automated identification system. Within the Virtual Battlespace 2 environment, participants controlled the video feed of an unmanned aircraft while they identified friendly and enemy personnel on the ground. Results indicate a significant difference in the ability to correctly identify targets between levels of automation and accuracy. Participants exhibited better calibration at the management by consent level of automation and at the lower accuracy level. These findings demonstrate the necessity of continued research in the field of automation trust.

It was hypothesized that differing levels of transparency and reliability of an interface will result in differing levels of trust from the operators. In the experiment, participants monitored the pressure of a system with differing levels of reliability (65% or 95% reliability) and differing levels of transparency (one line of system display or multiple lines of system display) while engaged in a simulated coffee making task. Prior literature has established that both system reliability and transparency affects operators' trust of automated systems, with transparency being newer territory. Thus, it was hypothesized that when the system is more reliable and more transparent, it would be trusted more often. To measure participants' trust, two different trust measures that are used in the field, the Human Computer Trust Scale (HCTS; Madsen & Gregor, 2000) and the Trust in Automated Systems Scale (TAS; Jian et al., 1998), were given to participants. Surprisingly, the hypotheses were generally not supported. Reliability and transparency generally did not impact participants' trust of the system, except in one instance where transparency was found to have the opposite effect of what was predicted. In addition to the main research questions, the two trust scales were additionally compared, in order to see if they are measuring trust in the same way. Correlation analyses revealed that the aggregate scores from both of the measures (HCTS AND TAS) were significantly correlated with each other, the sum of the positive-valence questions from the TAS was also significantly correlated with all five of the HCTS-5-question groupings, the sum of the negative-valence questions from the TAS was significantly correlated with three of the HCTS groupings, and the positive-valence and negative-valence TAS groupings were found to be negatively correlated with each other.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One component in the successful use of automated systems is the extent to which people trust the automation to perform effectively. In order to understand the relationship between trust in computerized systems and the use of those systems, we need to be able to effectively measure trust. Although questionnaires regarding trust have been used in prior studies, these questionnaires were theoretically rather than empirically generated and did not distinguish between three potentially different types of trust: human-human trust, human-machine trust, and trust in general. A three-phased experiment, comprising a word elicitation study, a questionnaire study, and a paired comparison study was performed, in order to better understand similarities and differences in the concepts of trust and distrust, and between the different types of trust. Results indicated that trust and distrust can be considered opposites, rather than comprising different concepts. Components of trust, in terms of words related to trust, were similar across the three types of trust. Results obtained from a cluster analysis were used to identify 12 potential factors of trust between people and automated systems. These 12 factors were then used to develop a proposed scale to measure trust in automation.

The benefits that have been reaped from this technological revolution have been many. At the same time, automation has not always worked as planned by designers, and many problems have arisen--from minor inefficiencies of operation to large-scale, catastrophic accidents. Understanding how humans interact with automation is vital for the successful design of new automated systems that are both safe and efficient. The influence of automation technology on human performance has often been investigated in a fragmentary, isolated manner, with investigators conducting disconnected studies in different domains. There has been little contact between these endeavors, although principles gleaned from one domain may have implications for another. Also, with a few exceptions, the research has tended to be empirical and only theory-driven. In recent years, however, various groups of investigators have begun to examine human performance in automated systems in general and to develop theories of human interaction with automation technology. This book presents the current theories and assesses the impact of automation on different aspects of human performance. Both basic and applied research is presented to highlight the general principles of human-computer interaction in several domains where automation technologies are widely implemented.
