Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Truro-Cape Cod or Land Marks and Sea Marks Tristram Shandy did not want to shake his credit for veracity by telling an improbable story, however indisputable the facts. We have not ventured into that debatable land between credulity and unbelief. Whatever the quality of our work, whether fish, flesh, or good red herring, we have taken the liberty of telling it honestly and in our own way. Our constant purpose has been to write nothing we should wish unwritten, and to leave unwritten nothing that belongs legitimately to our history. That we have not fully accomplished this purpose would be the most reasonable confession in the world. In every community there is an unconscious force, or sentiment, that lives in a thousand multiform conditions. Seemingly light as gossamer, it is tough as the Tellman shield of seven bull skins. Its intuitions of a good name - of home and kindred, in a described orbit, are among the best of human sensibilities. That the Cape people share quite freely in this sentiment is altogether praiseworthy, but it is a virtue susceptible of abuse and morbidly sensitive. I have aimed to write of them as they were, according to the best history and the best tradition; as they are, according to my own observation and experience. Book excerpt: Tiny Truro lies nestled between Wellfleet and Provincetown at the very end of Cape Cod. Incorporated in 1709, it was originally called Pamet by the Payomet Indians who resided there. Truro is a place of spectacular natural beauty, with a rich heritage of fishing, farming, and recreation by the sea. It has been a summer resort destination for more than one hundred years and has attracted scores of artists, authors, and other notable characters to its shores. Photographs of the founding families, their homesteads, and the breathtaking beauty of the cliffs at Highland Light are reflected in Truro. The churches where the town's residents mourned their men when they were lost at sea and served as beacons for ships in the dangerous waters off the coast are recorded in these early images. The spirit, playfulness, and dedication of the community is captured here, from the celebration party re-creating the Pilgrims' landing to the dogged weariness of trap fishermen at the end of a long, hard day.

Book Cape Cod and Plymouth Colony in the Seventeenth Century

Download or read book Cape Cod and Plymouth Colony in the Seventeenth Century written by H. Roger King and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1994 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the contribution of Cape Cod to the transformation of the Pilgrims' Plymouth into a mature colony. The author covers the exploration of the region as well as the early travels to the Cape before its settlement, explaining the eventual significance of individual towns like Sandwich, which became the colony's center of Quakerism. Politically, Cape towns forced the colony to adopt a representative legislature and economically, the Cape provided acreage for farming and sites for additional towns. King also examines why, despite the expansion and the growth, Plymouth still remained a poor and underpopulated colony. This book stands alone as the only study of the entire Cape to be published in this century.

Book Education and the Global Rural

Download or read book Education and the Global Rural written by Barbara Pini and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-02 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection challenges the urban-centric nature of much feminist work on gender and education. The context for the book is the radical reconfiguration of rural areas that has occurred in recent decades as a result of globalisation. From a range of diverse national contexts, including Kenya and South Africa, Australia and Canada, and the United States and Pakistan, authors explore the intersections between masculinity, femininity, and rurality in education. In recognition of the heterogeneity of categories such as ‘rural girl’ and ‘rural boy’ they attend to how educational exclusions can be magnified by differences in relation to social locations such as class, race, or sexuality. Similar critical insights are brought to bear as authors examine what it means to be a male or female teacher in rural environments. Contributors draw on data ranging from contemporary feature films to historical materials, along with detailed ethnographic work and participatory approaches, to produce a compelling narrative of the need to understand education as experienced by those who are not part of the urban majority. This book was originally published as a special issue of Gender and Education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Brewington Book Prize for Maritime History The story of the epic contest between shipping magnates Samuel Cunard and Edward Collins for mid-19th century control of the Atlantic. Between 1815 and the American Civil War, the greatest invention of the Industrial Revolution delivered a sea change in oceanic transportation. Steam travel transformed the Atlantic into a pulsating highway, dominated by ports in Liverpool and New York, as steamships ferried people, supplies, money, and information with astounding speed and regularity. American raw materials flowed eastward, while goods, capital, people, and technology crossed westward. The Anglo-American “partnership” fueled development worldwide; it also gave rise to a particularly intense competition. Steam Titans tells the story of a transatlantic fight to wrest control of the globe’s most lucrative trade route. Two men--Samuel Cunard and Edward Knight Collins--and two nations wielded the tools of technology, finance, and politics to compete for control of a commercial lifeline that spanned the North Atlantic. The world watched carefully to see which would win. Each competitor sent to sea the fastest, biggest, and most elegant ships in the world, hoping to earn the distinction of being known as “the only way to cross.” Historian William M. Fowler brings to life the spectacle of this generation-long struggle for supremacy, during which New York rose to take her place among the greatest ports and cities of the world, and recounts the tale of a competition that was the opening act in the drama of economic globalization, still unfolding today.

Book excerpt: First published in 1987, Maritime Boundaries and Ocean Resources is a collection of essays which examines the political jurisdiction of ocean boundaries and the affects that this has on the world’s oceans. It examines how the intensification of ocean use has raised questions of how rational planning, and the management of the oceans can avoid increasingly environmental damage and sea use conflict and examines the ocean as a tool for space, trade and communication. It also addresses the creation of integrated regional planning for ocean management.
