Book excerpt: TrunkWax: Delahunt at Large begins in the small Northern California town of Pylewood, when Jim Delahunt finds himself trapped by his wife at the bottom of an empty ten-thousand-gallon pickle barrel. Employing tricks acquired from over fifty years of experience as a merchant seaman, machinist, and cattle rancher, he frees himself and hooks up with two disgruntled buddies: a cowboy with two bad knees and a tightly wound organic farmer. Together, they hatch a plot aimed at getting him revenge, earning money for a double knee replacement for the cowboy, and commercializing TrunkWax, a microbial concoction that the organic farmer believes will revolutionize fruit cultivation. When Delahunt's part of the plan takes him to China, he gets kidnapped in Inner Mongolia by a Manchurian ex-cop. He is subsequently rescued by a group of international polo players, flown back to the United States, and reunited with his wife. Over breakfast, they both realize his incarceration in the barrel was pretty much the result of poor marital communication.

Numerical calculations and diagrams are presented to show the properties, compositions, and chemical reactions of these materials when exposed to varying laboratory conditions. The manual also looks at other elements such as scandium, yttrium, titanium, zirconium, hafnium, and thorium. Lengthy discussions on the characteristics and nature of these elements are presented. The third part of the guidebook discusses special compounds. The manual also provides formula and subject index, including an index for procedures, materials, and devices. Considering the value of information presented, the manual can best serve the interest of readers and scientists wanting to institute a system in the conduct of experiments in laboratories.

Book excerpt: The acclaimed and now-classic biographical novel of Walter Benjamin's last days--adapted into screenplay by Jay Parini. It is 1940. For the past decade, Walter Benjamin--the German-Jewish critic and philosopher--has been writing his masterpiece in a library in Paris, a city he loves. Now Nazi tanks have overrun the suburbs, and Benjamin is forced to flee. With a battered briefcase that contains his precious manuscript of a thousand handwritten pages, he sets off for the border and is led by chance to a young anti-Nazi who is taking Jews and other refugees over the Pyrenees into Spain, where they may (with luck) make their way to freedom in Portugal or South America. Beloved biographical novelist Jay Parini's thrilling tale of escape is beautifully interwoven with vignettes of Benjamin's complex, cosmopolitan past: his privileged childhood in Berlin, his years with the German Youth Movement, his university days. His close friendship with Gershom Scholem, the eminent scholar of Jewish mysticism, and many other well-known artists and intellectuals who were part of Benjamin's intimate circle between the two world wars. Part tragedy, part dark comedy, this sharply realized historical novel tells one of the great and most moving peripheral stories of the Holocaust.

Download or read book Hollywood Highbrow written by Shyon Baumann and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's moviegoers and critics generally consider some Hollywood products--even some blockbusters--to be legitimate works of art. But during the first half century of motion pictures very few Americans would have thought to call an American movie "art." Up through the 1950s, American movies were regarded as a form of popular, even lower-class, entertainment. By the 1960s and 1970s, however, viewers were regularly judging Hollywood films by artistic criteria previously applied only to high art forms. In Hollywood Highbrow, Shyon Baumann for the first time tells how social and cultural forces radically changed the public's perceptions of American movies just as those forces were radically changing the movies themselves. The development in the United States of an appreciation of film as an art was, Baumann shows, the product of large changes in Hollywood and American society as a whole. With the postwar rise of television, American movie audiences shrank dramatically and Hollywood responded by appealing to richer and more educated viewers. Around the same time, European ideas about the director as artist, an easing of censorship, and the development of art-house cinemas, film festivals, and the academic field of film studies encouraged the idea that some American movies--and not just European ones--deserved to be considered art.
