Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up in a New Jersey factory town in the 1980s, Daisy Hernández believed that her aunt had become deathly ill from eating an apple. No one in her family, in either the United States or Colombia, spoke of infectious diseases. Even into her thirties, she only knew that her aunt had died of Chagas, a rare and devastating illness that affects the heart and digestive system. But as Hernández dug deeper, she discovered that Chagas—or the kissing bug disease—is more prevalent in the United States than the Zika virus. After her aunt’s death, Hernández began searching for answers. Crisscrossing the country, she interviewed patients, doctors, epidemiologists, and even veterinarians with the Department of Defense. She learned that in the United States more than three hundred thousand people in the Latinx community have Chagas, and that outside of Latin America, this is the only country with the native insects—the “kissing bugs”—that carry the Chagas parasite. Through unsparing, gripping, and humane portraits, Hernández chronicles a story vast in scope and urgent in its implications, exposing how poverty, racism, and public policies have conspired to keep this disease hidden. A riveting and nuanced investigation into racial politics and for-profit healthcare in the United States, The Kissing Bug reveals the intimate history of a marginalized disease and connects us to the lives at the center of it all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Insect Life: Second Series Summer and Autumn IN studying insects it is very desirable to be able to keep them under observation from day to day. For this purpose various sorts of breeding cages are commonly employed. A breeding cage is simply a closed vessel in which a caterpillar or other insect may be kept alive and fed, so that it will go through the cycle of its changes where it can be seen. A Simple form of such a cage consists of a lantern globe or lamp chimney resting upon a wide, Shallow dish, in which sand or earth to a depth of two or three inches has been placed. When it is to be used for large caterpillars a small glass vial nearly full of water is set down in the sand in the middle of the space, with the top of the vial projecting somewhat above the surface. In this vial a leaf or branch of the food plant is placed. The cage is now ready for the caterpillar, which will find its food kept fresh for two or three days by the water in the vial. Then a new leaf or branch may be exchanged for the old one. The open top of the lamp chimney is to be kept covered with a small piece of mosquito netting, held'in place by a rubber band. For the lower dish a flowerpot or a flower pot saucer serves the purpose very well. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rambles Among the Insects IF my young friends will peruse this book with half the pleasure I enjoyed whilst gathering the facts which it relates, I Shall be abundantly repaid for the labor expended in writing it. The air and fields are so full of beautiful and sprightly things of life that I shall not fail to confer a favor upon intelligent and inquisitive boys and girls if I succeed in inspiring them with an interest in the study of insect-life. The objects embraced in this study are within the reach of every one. They intrude themselves into our presence uncalled, and at times are most unwelcome. For this reason they are despised, and their structure, instincts and domestic habits are unstudied. But, like all the works of God, they display his wisdom and goodness, and are, on this account, worthy of the profoundest study. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life in the Insect World: Or, Conversations Upon Insects, Between an Aunt and Her Nieces In offering to my friends a little book, written under circumstances of peculiar disadvantage, I feel that justice to myself requires an explanation of these circumstances, and that this explanation will sufficiently account for my having conceived the idea of writing a book at all. Confined to my bed with a painful disease, and suffering from an affection of the eyes which rendered me incapable of reading, writing or doing any thing which requires fixed sight, idleness became almost insupportable; I longed for something to do; something which would pleasantly and profitably occupy my time, and divert my thoughts from bodily suffering. But my situation seemed to cut off every resource. At length I procured an indented card upon which I learned to write with closed or bandaged eyes; and rejoicing in this newly acquired sense, for such it seemed to me, I was anxious to turn it to advantage. From childhood I have been interested in insects. In their infinite variety and exceeding beauty; in the admirable construction even of the most minute among them; and in the operations of their instinct, they manifest in a peculiarly interesting manner, the power and goodness of the Creator.
