Book True Style is What s Underneath

Download or read book True Style is What s Underneath written by Elisa Goodkind and published by Rizzoli Publications. This book was released on 2017-04-11 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new kind of style book with the inspiring and empowering message that “true style is self-acceptance,” profiling stylish influencers and celebrities who defy the cookie-cutter looks of today’s fashion magazines. The mother-daughter team behind the enormously popular websites StyleLikeU and What’s Underneath profile trendsetting artists and creatives of all ages, body types, races, and genders to embrace how self-expression and self-acceptance are the most important means of achieving personal style. Featuring people with original and creative style such as actress Lea DeLaria, who embraces her butch style with whimsy and humor; model and Miley Cyrus–muse Melanie Gaydos, who lives with a genetic disorder and who sees beauty as a state of being that she has achieved; designer Betsey Johnson, who continues to exert creative genius into her 70s; or Tallulah Willis, who has learned to keep a positive self-image in today’s negative tabloid culture. A wealth of photographs reflects each person’s unique look, while interviews reveal how their journey affects and informs their style. Throughout the book, the authors include inspiring manifestos such as: “Disentangle Style from Fashion”; “Dress to Express Your Inner Spirit”; “Beauty Is a State of Mind”; and “Turn Your Struggles Into Strengths”. By illustrating that personal style emanates from one’s comfort with oneself, this volume powerfully demonstrates that true style is what’s underneath.

Book Intuitionistic Proof Versus Classical Truth

Download or read book Intuitionistic Proof Versus Classical Truth written by Enrico Martino and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-23 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the role of acts of choice in classical and intuitionistic mathematics. Featuring fifteen papers – both new and previously published – it offers a fresh analysis of concepts developed by the mathematician and philosopher L.E.J. Brouwer, the founder of intuitionism. The author explores Brouwer’s idealization of the creative subject as the basis for intuitionistic truth, and in the process he also discusses an important, related question: to what extent does the intuitionistic perspective succeed in avoiding the classical realistic notion of truth? The papers detail realistic aspects in the idealization of the creative subject and investigate the hidden role of choice even in classical logic and mathematics, covering such topics as bar theorem, type theory, inductive evidence, Beth models, fallible models, and more. In addition, the author offers a critical analysis of the response of key mathematicians and philosophers to Brouwer’s work. These figures include Michael Dummett, Saul Kripke, Per Martin-Löf, and Arend Heyting. This book appeals to researchers and graduate students with an interest in philosophy of mathematics, linguistics, and mathematics.

Book Vagueness in Context

Download or read book Vagueness in Context written by Stewart Shapiro and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 2006-01-05 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stewart Shapiro's aim in Vagueness in Context is to develop both a philosophical and a formal, model-theoretic account of the meaning, function, and logic of vague terms in an idealized version of a natural language like English. It is a commonplace that the extensions of vague terms vary with such contextual factors as the comparison class and paradigm cases. A person can be tall with respect to male accountants and not tall (even short) with respect to professionalbasketball players. The main feature of Shapiro's account is that the extensions (and anti-extensions) of vague terms also vary in the course of a conversation, even after the external contextual features, such as the comparison class, are fixed. A central thesis is that in some cases, a competent speaker ofthe language can go either way in the borderline area of a vague predicate without sinning against the meaning of the words and the non-linguistic facts. Shapiro calls this open texture, borrowing the term from Friedrich Waismann. The formal model theory has a similar structure to the supervaluationist approach, employing the notion of a sharpening of a base interpretation. In line with the philosophical account, however, the notion of super-truth does not play a central role in the development of validity. The ultimate goal of the technical aspects of the work is to delimit a plausible notion of logical consequence, and to explore what happens with the sorites paradox.Later chapters deal with what passes for higher-order vagueness - vagueness in the notions of 'determinacy' and 'borderline' - and with vague singular terms, or objects. In each case, the philosophical picture is developed by extending and modifying the original account. This is followed with modifications to the model theory and the central meta-theorems.As Shapiro sees it, vagueness is a linguistic phenomenon, due to the kinds of languages that humans speak. But vagueness is also due to the world we find ourselves in, as we try to communicate features of it to each other. Vagueness is also due to the kinds of beings we are. There is no need to blame the phenomenon on any one of those aspects.

Book Reference and Referring

Download or read book Reference and Referring written by William P. Kabasenche and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2012-12-21 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Original essays on reference and referring by leading scholars that combine breadth of coverage with thematic unity. These fifteen original essays address the core semantic concepts of reference and referring from both philosophical and linguistic perspectives. After an introductory essay that casts current trends in reference and referring in terms of an ongoing dialogue between Fregean and Russellian approaches, the book addresses specific topics, balancing breadth of coverage with thematic unity. The contributors, all leading or emerging scholars, address trenchant neo-Fregean challenges to the direct reference position; consider what positive claims can be made about the mechanism of reference; address the role of a theory of reference within broader theoretical context; and investigate other kinds of linguistic expressions used in referring activities that may themselves be referring expressions. The topical unity and accessibility of the essays, the stage-setting introductory essay, and the comprehensive index combine to make Reference and Referring, along with the other books in the Topics in Contemporary Philosophy series, appropriate for use in advanced undergraduate and graduate courses.
