Book excerpt: In Real Love, Andrew Ross, one of our preeminent social critics, explores the vital connection between economic life and cultural expression. From the consequences of cyberspace for work and play to the uses and abuses of genetics in the O.J. trial, from world scarcity to world music, Ross interrogates the cultural forms through which economic forces take their daily toll upon our communities and environment. Examining the effects of debates about race, technology, ecology, and the arts on social and legal change, Ross focuses in particular on how demands for certain forms of cultural justice often go hand in hand with injustices of other sorts, and shows why cultural politics are a real and inescapable part of any argument for social change.

Book Names as Metaphors in Shakespeare s Comedies

Download or read book Names as Metaphors in Shakespeare s Comedies written by Grant W. Smith and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Names as Metaphors in Shakespeare’s Comedies' presents a comprehensive study of names in Shakespeare’s comedies. Although names are used in daily speech as simple designators, often with minimal regard for semantic or phonological suggestiveness, their coinage is always based on analogy. They are words (i.e., signs) borrowed from previous referents and contexts, and applied to new referents. Thus, in the literary use of language, names are figurative inventions and have measurable thematic significance: they evoke an association of attributes between two or more referents, contextualize each work of literature within its time, and reflect the artistic development of the writer. In the introduction, Smith describes the literary use of names as creative choices that show the indebtedness of authors to previous literature, as well as their imaginative descriptions (etymologically and phonologically) of memorable character types, and their references to cultural phenomena that make their names meaningful to their contemporary readers and audience. This book presents fourteen essays demonstrating the analytical models explained in the introduction. These essays focus on Shakespeare’s comedies as presented in the First Folio. They do not follow the chronological order of their composition; instead, the individual essays give special attention to differences between the plays that suggest Shakespeare’s artistic development, including the varied sources of his borrowings, the differences between his etymological and phonological coinages, the frequency and types of his topical references, and his use of epithets and generics. This book will appeal to Shakespeare students and scholars at all levels, particularly those who are keen on studying his comedies. This study will also be relevant for researchers and graduate students interested in onomastics. He can be reached at [email protected].

When we learn how to love ourselves unconditionally, we will be able to experience a life worth living and also inspire and touch the people around us. Then we not only make a difference in our own lives, but also in the lives of others. In her first book, Knowing Who I Am, Nianell tells how she has learned to love herself. She takes the reader on a journey through her life, from being a shy, withdrawn schoolgirl to becoming the acclaimed singer/songwriter she is today. Like most people, Nianell has had to face challenges, and she offers an honest and unpretentious account of her personal experience of suffering, the struggle to belong, love, womanhood, being a mother of triplets, and being a star. Her personal stories, many shared with the public for the first time, illustrate how she discovered who she really is and how she came to the point of accepting herself and her worth. Nianell’s descriptions of her experiences will touch your heart, inspire you, and help you realize the value of accepting and loving yourself as you are. Knowing Who I Am is an enjoyable combination of biography and inspiration. It is a reading and growing experience that will remain with you long after you have finished the book. Book Marriage in Seventeenth Century English Political Thought

Download or read book Marriage in Seventeenth Century English Political Thought written by Belinda Roberts Peters and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-09-08 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study traces the decline of marriage as a metaphor for political authority, subjection, and tyranny in Seventeenth-century political thought. An image that bound consent and contract with divine right absolutism, and irrevocably connected royal prerogatives with subjects' liberties, its disappearance in the middle decades of the century coincided with the full emergence of patriarchalist and social contract theories. If both these accepted the importance of 'fathers of families', neither would suggest that political government could be comparable to 'marriage'.

Book Intimacy on the Internet

Download or read book Intimacy on the Internet written by Lauren Rosewarne and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this book is on the media representations of the use of the Internet in seeking intimate connections—be it a committed relationship, a hook-up, or a community in which to dabble in fringe sexual practices. Popular culture (film, narrative television, the news media, and advertising) present two very distinct pictures of the use of the Internet as related to intimacy. From news reports about victims of online dating, to the presentation of the desperate and dateless, the perverts and the deviants, a distinct frame for the intimacy/Internet connection is negativity. In some examples however, a changing picture is emerging. The ubiquitousness of Internet use today has meant a slow increase in comparatively more positive representations of successful online romances in the news, resulting in more positive-spin advertising and a more even-handed presence of such liaisons in narrative television and film. Both the positive and the negative media representations are categorised and analysed in this book to explore what they reveal about the intersection of gender, sexuality, technology and the changing mores regarding intimacy.
