Book excerpt: In 1984, the Islamic Government of Pakistan ignored fundamental Islamic decorum by depriving Ahmadi Muslims many of their basic human rights including religious freedom. In an attempt to justify this action, the Government of Pakistan published a so-called White Paper under the title Qadiyaniyyat — Islam kay liyay Sangin Khatrah (Qadiyaniyyat—A Grave Threat to Islam). Although there was nothing new in this so-called White Paper—the objections in which had already been thoroughly refuted in Ahmadiyya Jama‘at literature—Hazrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad Khalifatul-Masih IV((rh), the then Imam of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama‘at, replied to these allegations in a series of sermons. These sermons (in Urdu) were published by the London Mosque in 1985 and the English translation is now being published. Hazrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad delivered this sermon on April 7, 1985 as the concluding speech of the Annual Conference of Jama‘at Ahmadiyya UK. It details the profound insight and conviction that the Promised Messiah(as) had in Khatm-e-Nubuwwat. By citing extensively from reputable sources throughout Islamic history, he demonstrates that the Ahmadiyya belief in Khatm-e-Nubuwwat is fully consistent with the consensus of the Companions(ra) of the Holy Prophet(sa) and the views held by respected Muslim scholars and authorities.

Book excerpt: The Promised Messiah(as) wrote Fountain of Christianity in March 1906, in response to the book Yansbi-ul-Islam, in which a Christian gentleman has tried to prove that the Holy Quran does not contain any new teachings and that the Holy Prophet(sa) merely copied the narratives from past scriptures-God forbid. The Promised Messiah(as) responded to this objection, first, by raising serious doubts about the authenticity of the Christian Gospels, and then went on to show how the Holy Quran is a unique and peerless book, how so many of its prophecies have been fulfilled, and how its blessings live on to this day. In this small book, the author also argues against the doctrines of Trinity and Atonement held by present-day Christians, and shows that these beliefs have nothing to do with the teachings of Jesus(as) himself. The second part of the book, or Epilogue, consists of a profound thesis on the meaning of true salvation. The Promised Messiah(as) describes salvation as "The abiding peace and happiness which man, by his very nature, hungers and thirsts for,and which is achieved through personal love and recognition of God, and through a perfect relationship with Him."

The book also shows how borders are continually being maintained through violence at national, community and individual levels. By exploring selected sites and expressions of piety including shrines, texts, practices and movements, Virinder S. Kalra and Navtej K. Purewal argue that the popular religion of Punjab should neither be limited to a polarised picture between formal, institutional religion, nor the 'enchanted universe' of rituals, saints, shrines and village deities. Instead, the book presents a picture of 'religion' as a realm of movement, mobilization, resistance and power in which gender and caste are connate of what comes to be known as 'religious'. Through extensive ethnographic research, the authors explore the reality of the complex, dynamic and contested relations that characterize everyday material and religious lives on the ground.
