Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from True and False Democracy The modern newspaper has greatly extended the rule of the fo'rmula or the phrase. The head-line of to - day is the rallying - cry of to - mor row. A motto is substituted for a principle. The words democracy, democratic, undemocratic, are constantly used in this way for purposes that are either bad or misleading. The appeal is to the mob, not to the people. Book True and False Democracy

Download or read book True and False Democracy written by Nicholas Murray Butler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-05 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from True and False Democracy If knowledge is power, surely there are times when ignorance seems more powerful still. No lessons are so little learned as those of past human experience in politics. In each succeeding generation men come forward who are rash or foolish enough to attempt any experiment, no matter how discredited, and vain enough to attack any tradition or institution, no matter how fully justified and established. They foment disturbing change and prevent progress. The name democracy is old, but the thing itself is quite new. Until the rise of public opinion, democracy in the modern sense was not possible. Nevertheless, human nature has been pretty much the same since history began, and human strength and human weakness have been exhibited and tested in almost every possible way. Book True Democracy Contrasted With False Democracy

Download or read book True Democracy Contrasted With False Democracy written by Robert Wilmot and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from True Democracy Contrasted With False Democracy: Or, Gen. L. Harrison's Cause Vindicated It is foreign to thissubject to state'that the writer of this work overthrew the tithe-system in England, by a work eh titled The Wrongs of Man, (ih contradistinction to the Rights of Man) signed, Fairfax, in imitation of the name of the revolutionary general under Cromwell. The tithe in England now, is a tithe of rent, instead of a tithe of pro duce reducing the tithe from thirty in the hundred to ten. Should General Harrison be so fortunate as to'succeed to the Chair, it is expected the principles of this pamphlet will be realized, or it will be necessary to remind the Gren eral, that a confidence to that effect was the source of his popularity; After being called the old woman in the iron cage, etc. Etc., as expressed by the opposite party.r I mention this by the way, not that I have any doubts of the General, who, thank God, possesses common sense and discernment, which Van Buren does not, or he would not advocate aristocratic measures, and call them democratic. All this is surplusage, and perhaps unnecessary, yet the time may come, when recorded principles are requisite to be referred to, surrounded as General Harrison will be by all kinds of inducements to make him_ swerve from popular rights 5 as Van Boron has done before him. Book Democracy False Or True A Prologue and Dream Classic Reprint

Download or read book Democracy False Or True A Prologue and Dream Classic Reprint written by W. B. Richmond and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Democracy False or True? A Prologue and Dream It is a dangerous, but agreeable, game to play the prophet, perhaps unwise; but while admitting that, I am going to do so, not because I feel sure, but because I want to sift my own thoughts. I may be told why not do so in private? I've done that already. Probably it does not matter what an old man says, He is a weather beaten block waiting for axe or fire. Whatever Ideals are mine, there are few which are in agreement with the fashion of to-day. Still I am capable of looking forward. I've looked back a great deal in my life, and been a humble student of Cause and Effect. Young enough to believe, even though it lies distant from hence, in Utopia, and I make bold to say so. I still believe in the human race. I still believe in a capacity for repentance and change of direction from bad to a better state of things. It is likely that the desirable, according to my philosophy, would be the undesirable to many, perhaps, just now, most people 1 Nevertheless I mean to state it. William Morris made a delightful story, News from Nowhere; he thought that Socialism would realise his Ideal, perhaps it might; anyway Socialism is a pleasanter word than Individualism, it suggests Thou, the other cries I. Thou has not been in the air of late. I has been so, and prominently; of this, more presently! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Democracy and Education

Download or read book Democracy and Education written by John Dewey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1916 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book The Gospel of Jesus and the Problems of Democracy Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Gospel of Jesus and the Problems of Democracy Classic Reprint written by Henry C. Vedder and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-16 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel of Jesus and the Problems of Democracy The man who to-day proclaims the Gospel of Jesus in the spirit of his Master must expect misunderstand ing, abuse and perhaps persecution. Why not? Shall the disciple be above his Master? Still in heaven's name the deeds of hell are done Still on the high-road, 'neath the noonday sun The fires of hate are lit for them who dare Follow their Lord along the untrodden way. I am not suprised or disquieted, therefore, that I am accused of being a dangerous heretic. And it is with no expectation of getting rid of that reputation that I here protest that I have no quarrel with ortho doxy. The kernel of it I believe to be truth, as firmly as the most orthodox. I find nothing false in it, save that kind of falsity which results from a lay ing of the emphasis in the wrong place. The change of emphasis that I urge, from the metaphysics of Paul to the ethics of Jesus, involves such a difference of perspective, such a readjustment of magnitudes and values, as appears like heresy to the more conservative. But after a time they will learn to make the adjust ment, and will perceive that nothing valued by the old orthodoxy has been lost, though its form may have been not a little altered. Book The Life and Death of Democracy

Download or read book The Life and Death of Democracy written by John Keane and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2009-06-01 with total page 717 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Keane's The Life and Death of Democracy will inspire and shock its readers. Presenting the first grand history of democracy for well over a century, it poses along the way some tough and timely questions: can we really be sure that democracy had its origins in ancient Greece? How did democratic ideals and institutions come to have the shape they do today? Given all the recent fanfare about democracy promotion, why are many people now gripped by the feeling that a bad moon is rising over all the world's democracies? Do they indeed have a future? Or is perhaps democracy fated to melt away, along with our polar ice caps? The work of one of Britain's leading political writers, this is no mere antiquarian history. Stylishly written, this superb book confronts its readers with an entirely fresh and irreverent look at the past, present and future of democracy. It unearths the beginnings of such precious institutions and ideals as government by public assembly, votes for women, the secret ballot, trial by jury and press freedom. It tracks the changing, hotly disputed meanings of democracy and describes quite a few of the extraordinary characters, many of them long forgotten, who dedicated their lives to building or defending democracy. And it explains why democracy is still potentially the best form of government on earth -- and why democracies everywhere are sleepwalking their way into deep trouble.

Book Democracy in America Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Democracy in America Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Alexis De Tocqueville and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-25 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Democracy in America, Vol. 2 Men will not accept truth at the hands of their enemies, and truth is seldom offered to them by their friends: for this reason I have spoken it. I was persuaded that many would take upon themselves to announce the new blessings which the principle of equality promises to mankind, but that few would dare to point out from afar the dangers with which it threatens them. To those perils therefore I have turned my chief attention, and believing that I had discovered them clearly, I have not had the cowardice to leave them untold. I trust that my readers will find in this Second Part that impartiality which seems to have been remarked in the former work. Placed as I am in the midst of the conflicting opinions between which we are divided, I have endeavored to suppress within me for a time the favorable sympathies or the adverse emotions with which each of them inspires me. If those who read this book can find a single sentence intended to flatter any of the great parties which have agitated my country, or any of those petty factions which now harass and weaken it, let such readers raise their voices to accuse me. Book What s Wrong with Democracy

Download or read book What s Wrong with Democracy written by Loren J. Samons and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2007-04-23 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is unlike any recent work I know of. It offers a challenging, often refreshing, and what will certainly be a controversial assessment of classical Athenian democracy and its significance to modern America. Samons is willing to tread where few other classicists are willing to go in print. He reminds readers that the Athenian democracy offers just as many negative lessons as positive ones, and topics like the popular vote, the dangers of state payments to individual citizens, the naturally acquisitive foreign policy of democratic governments, and the place of religion in democracy all come up for discussion and criticism. Samons has written an original and very provocative book."—James Sickinger, author of Public Records and Archives in Classical Athens "Professor Samons' lively and challenging account of ancient Athens raises important questions about democracy, ancient and modern. It will surely arouse keen interest and debate."—Donald Kagan, author of The Peloponnesian War "In this elegantly written, carefully researched, and perceptive book, Samons presents a penetrating analysis of ancient Athenian democracy's dark sides. His book is as much about the errors and weaknesses of our own political system as it is about those of ancient Athens. Whether or not we agree with his critique and conclusions, this book is not merely thought-provoking: it is annoyingly discomforting, forcing us to re-examine firm beliefs and to discard easy solutions."—Kurt A. Raaflaub, author of Discovery of Freedom in Ancient Greece "In this marvelously unfashionable book, Samons debunks much of what passes in the current-day academy as scholarship on classical Athens, demonstrating that it is an ideologically-driven apology for a radically defective form of government. In the process, he casts light on the perspicacity of America's founding fathers and on the unthinking populism that threatens in our own day to ruin their legacy."—Paul A. Rahe, author of Republics Ancient and Modern: Classical Republicanism and the American Revolution "We are in the greatest age of democracy since antiquity and in the most need of guidance about the wisdom of government by majority vote. Precisely for that reason Professor Samons offers a bold and unbridled look at the nature and history of democracies, ancient and modern. He reminds us that we are capable of doing as much evil as good when constitutional protections and republican oversight are not there to moderate the instant desires of the majority. This is an engaging, provocative, and timely study of ancient Athens and modern America that should serve as a cautionary reminder to both romantic scholars and zealous diplomats."—Victor Davis Hanson, author of The Other Greeks
