This book was released on 2018-04-29 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Trotting Horse of America: How to Train and Drive Him; With Reminiscences of the Trotting Turf To suggestions that the public was eager for the book, and wanted it completed early, he commonly replied that he wanted it completed well. There was, he said, no more reason for hurrying out this, his only work, than there would be in his hurrying on the edu cation of a horse that he deemed certain to make a trotter. He was no believer in the forcing pro cess, and always contended that the book would be all the better for the extra time he had resolved to devote to it. Nothing could exceed his anxiety to avoid any thing that by misapplication might be mis chievous. He was eminently a man of clear, strong views, and of few, terse words. Many of the most valuable and well-tried conclusions of his genius and experience will be found set down in his literal words in a very few lines. I have never met with a man who was so quick and direct in coming at the kernel of a question, and who threw away the husk and shell so promptly as utterly worthless. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1904 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XXXII BREEDING AND BREEDING ESTABLISHMENTS The Kentucky Trotting Horse Association was organized in 1873, and when I attended its first meetings at Lexington, the outlook was anything but cheerful. Only what you might call a corporal's guard paid to see the races; and the officers of the famous Kentucky Association, the then oldest active racing association in America, with General John C. Breckinridge at its head, predicted a speedy failure. The best people went to the running races, and noses were turned up at the trotter. The pioneers of the movement, however, were made of stern stuff, and did not readily yield to discouragement. Colonel Richard West, Major Henry C. McDowell, Lucas Brodhead, W. H. Wilson, R. G. Stoner, Dr. L. Herr, R. P. Todhunter, J. C. McFerran, R. S. Veech, and John E. Green, the three last from Louisville, persevered in the effort, and the association steadily grew in importance and influence. It became the fashion for gentlemen from the East, notably New York, Buffalo, Philadelphia, and Boston, to charter private cars and spend the week in the Blue-grass section with the trotter; and it was not long before the accommodations of Lexington were severely overtaxed during the October meeting. The gates of the running track finally were closed, and thousands flocked to the well-appointed grounds of the trotting association. The leading breeding establishment was Woodburn Farm, founded by R. A. Alexander; and next in importance were Glenview Stock Farm, J. C. McFerran, at Louisville; Indian Hill, R. S. Veech, Louisville; Edge Hill, Richard West, Georgetown; Ashland, H. C. McDowell, Lexington; Fairlawn, General W. T. Withers, Lexington; Forest Park, Dr. L. Herr, Lexington; and Abdallah Park, Cynthiana. Other...
