Book Tropospheric Processes Observations and Interpretation

Download or read book Tropospheric Processes Observations and Interpretation written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-10-18 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three aspects of tropospheric chemical processes imposed by manmade emission of source gases will be discussed. First, the implications for the OH distribution and thereby for the lifetime of source gases which are controlled by reactions with OH in the troposphere (e.g., CH4 and HCFC) are investigated. This is of importance for stratosphere ozone and climate. Second, we will study the impact of source gas emission on tropospheric ozone and discuss the possibility to estimate indirect climate effects from the changes in ozone and other climate gases. Finally, the degradation of HFC and HCFC's is discussed. Isaksen, Ivar S. A. and Fuglestvedt, J. Book IMPACT a Coupled Tropospheric

Download or read book IMPACT a Coupled Tropospheric written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have conducted multi-year simulations describing the distributions of important chemical species in both the troposphere and stratosphere using the LLNL IMPACT atmospheric chemistry model. Simulations have been completed using input meteorological data from both a general circulation model (NCAR MACCM3, Middle Atmospheric Community Climate Model Version 3) and analyzed fields (NASA Data Assimilation Office, STRATF product). IMPACT includes modules describing tropospheric and stratospheric processes and emissions to determine species distributions from the surface to approximately 70 kilometers in altitude. We compare results of these simulations with both long term and short term observational data including surface measurements, vertical profiles and others. We contrast the model's ability to simulate important photochemical cycles (CO/CH4/NMHC/NOx/OH/O3, etc) using both input meteorological datasets. In addition, IMPACT simulations driven with analyzed data are compared to ground based and aircraft campaigns.

Book excerpt: This book provides chapters with subjects ranging from the basic understanding of rainfall variability to the impact of climate change with novel methodologies and concepts. This book is mainly intended for post-graduate doctoral students and early career researchers for their use in academic and research programs. This book compiles the chapters with different data sets that are publicly available and from site-based measurements along with the data generation methods and modeling aspects. Rainfall plays an important role; its deficiency leads to meteorological droughts and further impacts hydrological, agricultural, and socioeconomic droughts, and its surplus causes floods over urban areas. With the advancement of technology, it is possible to determine future rainfall accurately by collating the data from observations, radar, and satellite and model simulations. The current book is of immense help in evaluating and understanding the atmospheric processes governed by the various physical laws, and the results of the chapters provide deep insight for a better understanding of rainfall phenomena across the different regions of the world.

Book The Future of Atmospheric Boundary Layer Observing Understanding and Modeling

Download or read book The Future of Atmospheric Boundary Layer Observing Understanding and Modeling written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-01-03 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improved observations of the atmospheric boundary layer (BL) and its interactions with the ocean, land, and ice surfaces have great potential to advance science on a number of fronts, from improving forecasts of severe storms and air quality to constraining estimates of trace gas emissions and transport. Understanding the BL is a crucial component of model advancements, and increased societal demands for extended weather impact forecasts (from hours to months and beyond) highlight the need to advance Earth system modeling and prediction. New observing technologies and approaches (including in situ and ground-based, airborne, and satellite remote sensing) have the potential to radically increase the density of observations and allow new types of variables to be measured within the BL, which will have broad scientific and societal benefits. In October 2017, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a workshop to explore the future of BL observations and their role in improving modeling and forecasting capabilities. Workshop participants discussed the science and applications drivers for BL observation, emerging technology to improve observation capabilities, and strategies for the future. This publication summarizes presentations and discussions from the workshop.
