Book Design of Structural Elements with Tropical Hardwoods

Download or read book Design of Structural Elements with Tropical Hardwoods written by Abel O. Olorunnisola and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-31 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides basic information on the design of structures with tropical woods. It is intended primarily for teaching university- and college-level courses in structural design. It is also suitable as a reference material for practitioners. Although parts of the background material relate specifically to West and East Africa, the design principles apply to the whole of tropical Africa, Latin America and South Asia. The book is laced with ample illustrations including photographs of real life wood structures and structural elements across Africa that make for interesting reading. It has numerous manual and Excel spread sheet worked examples and review questions that can properly guide a first-time designer of wooden structural elements. A number of design problems are also solved using the FORTRAN programming language. Topics covered in the thirteen chapters of the book include a brief introduction to the book, the anatomy and physical properties of tropical woods; a bri ef review of the mechanical properties of wood, timber seasoning and preservation, uses of wood and wood products in construction; basic theory of structures, and structural load computations; design of wooden beams, solid and built-up wooden columns, wood connections and wooden trusses; as well as a brief introduction to the design of wooden bridges.

Book Endangered Valuable Tropical Hardwoods in Palawan Philippines

Download or read book Endangered Valuable Tropical Hardwoods in Palawan Philippines written by Lauri M. Oikarinen and published by BoD - Books on Demand. This book was released on 2020-01-24 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is two books in one and contains the following stories: Save the Philippine Ironwood and other critically endangered highly valuable tropical hardwood species! These wonderful trees are most likely going to go extinct without immediate intervention. We can propagate more than 22 different hardwood species now, if you help us to do so. We have an operating nursery and we can produce tens of thousands of high quality seedlings for reforestation every year, if there is someone who has land to plant them into the ground. Please help us to get continuous annual planting started! At December 2019, our nursery had still over 2,000 pieces of 17 different Palawan hardwood tree seedlings in stock, but we cannot find enough buyers who would plant them! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A research on the availability, germination and propagation of selected Palawan hardwood tree species: the Mangkono (Ironwood), Ipil, Mountain Agoho and Narra - It included the following field research: * Surveys to find potential Mother-Trees * Availability study of seeds and wildlings * Seed germination analysis for selected species * Observations and experiments on survival of seedling in nursery and out-planted. There is practically no research on these species and this is an open invitation to study more about these magnificent species. The surveys located enough Mother-Trees to successfully save, protect, propagate and educate about these hardwood species. Some species can be easily propagated from seeds, while many others must be propagated from wildlings, as of now, due to extreme difficulty to find enough seeds or very low-germination rates. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I would love to plant many trees in the field and help to organize more research, but I have no more resources to do enough. I am asking for all of you who love to plant trees to read what I have done this far and join my efforts to plant million trees first in Palawan and then other islands in the Philippines.

Book Tropical Hardwood Utilization Practice and Prospects

Download or read book Tropical Hardwood Utilization Practice and Prospects written by Roelof A.A. Oldeman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roelof A. A. Oldeman Tropical hardwoods are one of the essential cogs in the complex socio-economic machinery keeping alive an ever-increasing humanity with steadily rising claims upon a finite-resource environment. Their position in this context at first sight seems to be analogous to that of other commodities, such as rubber, metals, mineral oil, tropical fruits and many more. Looking closer, however, tropical hardwoods occupy a special place. Their vast majority, unlike tropical crops, still comes forth from natural forests being exploited by man. This exploitation straight from the natural resource is something they have in common with oil and metals, but the fact that they grow in living systems places them closer to crops. Natural forest ecosystems are not renewable. Timber producing trees, however, can be made into a renewable resource on condition that ways and means are found to cultivate them as a crop. be understood as a socio-economic The tropical hardwood situation can best chain, with the resource base at one end, the consumer community at the other and everything that has to do with the market in the middle. Now, at the resource side, the economics of tropical hardwood extraction barely got out of the primeval ways of wood-gathering by hand and by axe, which were still predominant in the nineteen-forties. There, the offer of natural products was so immense and so near to hand that no care had to be taken of the resource.

Book The Economics of the Tropical Timber Trade

Download or read book The Economics of the Tropical Timber Trade written by Edward B Barbier and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-09 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1994, The Economics of the Tropical Timber Trade provides a detailed analysis of the economic linkages between the trade and forest degradation. Based on a report prepared for the ITTO, it looks current and future market conditions at the time of publication, and assesses the impacts on current and future market conditions, and assesses the impacts on tropical forests of both the international timber trade and domestic demand. The authors examine the causes of deforestation and compare the environmental impacts of the timber trade with other factors, such as the conversion of the forests to agriculture. Finally, they assess the national and international trade policy options, and discuss the potential role of interventions in the international timber trade in promoting efficient and sustainable use of forest resources. The book will be of interest to those concerned with forest management and policy, trade and environment, and with the economics of conversation and resource use.

Book Timber Bridges

Download or read book Timber Bridges written by Christopher J. Mettem and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bridges built in timber are enjoying a significant revival, both for pedestrian and light traffic and increasingly for heavier loadings and longer spans. Timber's high strength-to-weight ratio, combined with the ease and speed of construction inherent in the off-site prefabrication methods used, make a timber bridge a suitable option in many different scenarios. This handbook gives technical guidance on forms, materials, structural design and construction techniques suitable for both small and large timber bridges. Eurocode 5 Part Two (BS EN 1995-2) for the first time provides an international standard for the construction of timber bridges, removing a potential obstacle for engineers where timber construction for bridges has not – in recent centuries at least – been usual. Clearly illustrated throughout, this guide explains how to make use of this oldest construction material in a modern context to create sustainable, aesthetically pleasing, practical and durable bridges. Worldwide examples include Tourand Creek Bridge, Canada; Toijala, Finland; Punt la Resgia, Switzerland; Pont de Crest, France; Almorere Pylon Bridge, the Netherlands.
