Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tropical Diseases Bulletin, 1920, Vol. 16 On account of his responsible position and large area of control as Deputy Director of Medical Services, the author was able to collect and assess facts in the Mesopotamia campaign relating to the prevailing diseases which were encountered. He has given a masterly account of the outbreak of beriberi in the Army, especially that associated with the siege of Kut. Many of the facts have already been reported on, but he makes it quite clear that the troops were simultaneously suffering from both partial starvation and beriberi, and that the condition of inanition produced by the starvation always favoured the development of beriberi symptoms; malaria was also a predisposing cause. Book The Diseases of Tropical Plants Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Diseases of Tropical Plants Classic Reprint written by Melville Thurston Cook and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diseases of Tropical Plants The very rapid development of plant pathology during the past few years and the increasing interest in tropical agriculture have led the writer to prepare this introductory work on the Diseases of Tropical Plants. An extensive study of the fungi, bacteria, and other organisms which cause the diseases of plants was a necessary preliminary to the development of plant pathology, and the progress in this subject has been much more rapid in the north temperate zone than in the tropics. In the past few years, however, there has been a great awakening of interest in these studies throughout both the eastern and western tropics. Nevertheless, the literature is scattered, frequently indefinite in character, and presents an abundance of difficulties to the student at the present time. While gathering material for this book, one correspondent wrote that the time had not yet come when it was possible for any one to write a work on the diseases of tropical plants. The writer is now ready to agree with this gentleman, and to add that it is doubtful if the time will ever come when any one author can adequately treat of the tropics of the entire world and their plant diseases. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tropical Medicine: With Special Reference to the West Indies, Central America, Hawaii and the Philippines, Including a General Consideration of Tropical Hygiene The purposes, scope and plan of the work are set forth in the Introduction. Each day the claims of Tropical Medicine upon American interest are more freely admitted by the medical profession and although we have no established school for the exclusive training of men in tropical pathology and hygiene, as yet, the necessity for such an institution is widely conceded and doubtless will be properly met in due time. Certain of the larger medical colleges have already established lectureships and courses of instruction for senior and advanced students and it is pleasant to think that the men who now go forth from these institutions, some of them to practice our profession in the extended tropical possessions of the United States, will have a conception of exotic diseases and pathology, which will guide them into paths of use ful and satisfying work.
