Download or read book El Gavilan written by Craig McDonald and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2011-11-18 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The news is full of it: escalating tensions from illegal immigration; headless bodies hanging off bridges and bounties placed on lawmen on both sides of the border. New Austin, Ohio, is a town grappling with waves of undocumented workers who exert tremendous pressure on schools, police and city services. In the midst of the turmoil, three very different kinds of cops scramble to maintain control and impose order. But the rape-murder of a Mexican-American woman triggers a brutal chain of events that threatens to leave no survivors. El Gavilan is a novel of shifting alliances and whiplash switchbacks. Families are divided and careers and lives threatened. Friendships and ideals are tested and budding love affairs challenged. With its topical themes, shades-of-gray characters and dark canvas, El Gavilan is a novel for our charged times.

A twisting trail through northern New York’s rugged Adirondack Mountains leads Sheridan to Glenny’s killer, but not before he deals with a barroom brawl with the town bully, a near-miss in the deep woods, and enough red herrings to fill any angler’s stringer.
Download or read book The Captain and the Cavalry Trooper written by Catherine Curzon and published by Totally Entwined Group (USA+CAD). This book was released on 2018-04-03 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the Great War tears Europe apart, two men from different worlds find sanctuary in each other's arms. Captain Robert Thorne is the fiercest officer in the regiment. Awaiting the command to go to the front, he has no time for simpering, comely lads. That's until one summer day in 1917, when his dark, flashing eye falls upon the newest recruit at Chateau de Desgravier, a fresh-faced farmer's boy with little experience of life and a wealth of poetry in his heart. Trooper Jack Woodvine has a way with strong, difficult stallions, and whispers them to his gentle will. Yet even he has never tamed a creature like Captain Thorne. With the shadow of the Great War and the scheming of enemies closer to home threatening their fleeting chance at happiness, can the captain and the cavalry trooper make it home safely? More importantly, will they see peacetime together?

Download or read book The Ultimate Protest written by Ray E. Boomhower and published by University of New Mexico Press. This book was released on 2024-03-15 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ultimate Protest: Malcolm W. Browne, Thich Quang Duc, and the News Photograph That Stunned the World examines how the most unlikely of war correspondents, Malcolm W. Browne, became the only Western reporter to capture Buddhist monk Thich Quang Duc's horrific self-immolation on June 11, 1963. Quang Duc made his ultimate sacrifice to protest the perceived anti-Buddhist policies of the Catholic-dominated administration of South Vietnam's president Ngo Dinh Diem. Biographer Ray E. Boomhower's The Ultimate Protest explores the background of the Buddhist crisis in South Vietnam in the spring of 1963 that led to Quang Duc's self-sacrifice as well as the worldwide reaction to Browne's photograph, how it affected American policy toward Diem's government, and the role the image played in the violent coup on November 1, 1963, that deposed Diem and led to his assassination. The book also delves into the dynamics involved in covering the Vietnam War in the early days of the American presence and the pressures placed on the journalists to stop raising doubts about how the war was going. Browne and his colleague David Halberstam shared the 1964 Pulitzer Prize for international reporting for their work in Vietnam.
