Book excerpt: The 14 essays in Game on, Hollywood! take on several points of game and film intersection. They look at storylines, aesthetics, mechanics, and production. The book is about adaptation (video game to film, film to video game), but it is even more about narrative. The essays draw attention to the ways and possibilities of telling a story. They consider differences and similarities across modes of storytelling (showing, telling, interacting), explore the consequences of time, place and ideology, and propose critical approaches to the vastness of narrative in the age of multimedia storytelling. The video games and film texts discussed include The Warriors (1979 film; 2005 video game), GoldenEye (1995 film), GoldenEye 007 (1997 and 2011 video games), Buffy the Vampire Slayer (2000-2004, television show), Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Chaos Bleeds (2003 video game), Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2003 video game; 2010 film), the Star Wars franchise empire (1977 on), Afro Samurai (2009 video game), and Disney's Epic Mickey (2010 video game).

Book Video Gaming in Science Fiction

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As video gaming and gaming culture became more mainstream in the 1970s, science fiction authors began to incorporate aspects of each into their work. This study examines how media-fueled paranoia about video gaming—first emerging almost fifty years ago—still resonates in modern science fiction. The author reveals how negative stereotypes of gamers and gaming have endured in depictions of modern gamers in the media and how honest portrayals are still wanting, even in the “forward thinking” world of science fiction.

Book Storyworlds Across Media

Download or read book Storyworlds Across Media written by Marie-Laure Ryan and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proliferation of media and their ever-increasing role in our daily life has produced a strong sense that understanding media—everything from oral storytelling, literary narrative, newspapers, and comics to radio, film, TV, and video games—is key to understanding the dynamics of culture and society. Storyworlds across Media explores how media, old and new, give birth to various types of storyworlds and provide different ways of experiencing them, inviting readers to join an ongoing theoretical conversation focused on the question: how can narratology achieve media-consciousness? The first part of the volume critically assesses the cross- and transmedial validity of narratological concepts such as storyworld, narrator, representation of subjectivity, and fictionality. The second part deals with issues of multimodality and intermediality across media. The third part explores the relation between media convergence and transmedial storyworlds, examining emergent forms of storytelling based on multiple media platforms. Taken together, these essays build the foundation for a media-conscious narratology that acknowledges both similarities and differences in the ways media narrate.

Book Flickers of Film

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jason Sperb
  • Publisher : Rutgers University Press
  • Release : 2015-12-15
  • ISBN : 0813576032
  • Pages : 166 pages

Download or read book Flickers of Film written by Jason Sperb and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-15 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether paying tribute to silent films in Hugo and The Artist or celebrating arcade games in Tron: Legacy and Wreck-It-Ralph, Hollywood suddenly seems to be experiencing a wave of intense nostalgia for outmoded technologies. To what extent is that a sincere lament for modes of artistic production that have nearly vanished in an all-digital era? And to what extent is it simply a cynical marketing ploy, built on the notion that nostalgia has always been one of Hollywood’s top-selling products? In Flickers of Film, Jason Sperb offers nuanced and unexpected answers to these questions, examining the benefits of certain types of film nostalgia, while also critiquing how Hollywood’s nostalgic representations of old technologies obscure important aspects of their histories. He interprets this affection for the prehistory and infancy of digital technologies in relation to an industry-wide anxiety about how the digital has grown to dominate Hollywood, pushing it into an uncertain creative and economic future. Yet he also suggests that Hollywood’s nostalgia for old technologies ignores the professionals who once employed them, as well as the labor opportunities that have been lost through the computerization and outsourcing of film industry jobs. Though it deals with nostalgia, Flickers of Film is strikingly cutting-edge, one of the first studies to critically examine Pixar’s role in the film industry, cinematic representations of videogames, and the economic effects of participatory culture. As he takes in everything from Terminator: Salvation to The Lego Movie, Sperb helps us see what’s distinct about this recent wave of self-aware nostalgic films—how Hollywood nostalgia today isn’t what it used to be.

Book Tron Legacy Behind the Film

Download or read book Tron Legacy Behind the Film written by Andrew Soler and published by Hyperink Inc. This book was released on 2012-02-24 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK Marketing hype for Tron: Legacy started years before the film’s actual. At the 2008 Comic-Con in San Diego, Disney unveiled a teaser trailer for a potential Tron sequel, delighting the stunned audience. Coyly titled TR2N, the teaser created enough buzz to convince Disney executives to continue an ambitious three-and-a-half year marketing campaign. At a cost of $170 million, Tron: Legacy finally debuted on December 17, 2010, surpassing Disney’s wildest expectations and grossing a staggering $400 million worldwide. The box office sensation mesmerized audiences with its slick, high-tech depiction of a father-son reunion in a futuristic dystopia. With Academy Award-winning actor Jeff Bridges reprising his role as Kevin Flynn and CLU, the film featured cutting-edge special effects and an electronic soundtrack by Daft Punk. With its lucrative run in theaters complete, Tron: Legacy continues to impress. Pete Hammond of Box Office Magazine observed, "Legacy's great story and acting are matched by great effects.” MEET THE AUTHOR Andrew Soler has published poetry and short stories while working as a newspaper journalist. After selling gas masks and chopping wood in an industrial lumberyard, he quit his job to finish college and earned a BA, Political Science. Andrew then spent five years teaching English, History and creative writing in the bay area. He is interested in provocative music, muscle cars, gritty movies and beatnik literature. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Sam’s character growth reflects the story’s thematic world. As the film progresses, Sam changes from a jaded, self-interested lone wolf into a selfless hero willing to make sacrifices to bring back his father to the real world. The moment he leaves his father’s safe house to find access to the portal -- defying his father’s wishes -- is a symbolic moment. No longer the cynical prankster who avoids his father’s business, Sam transforms into a warrior willing to take risks for freedom. Throughout the film, the ideas of selfishness and selfless sacrifice violently clash, culminating in the eerie climax when Kevin Flynn gives up his own life to prevent CLU from travelling through the portal into the real world. Religious motifs, especially Buddhist-oriented ideas, fuel the film’s surprisingly contemplative existential tone. Like a soulful meditation during a storm of special effects and futuristic sounds – a stylish bombardment of the senses – the film’s underlying mood is Zen-like. When Sam first meets his father, Kevin Flynn is in the midst of a sesshin, or intense Zen-Buddhist meditation. Even the decor of Flynn’s safe house is therapeutically minimalist, a welcome retreat from the noisy urban nightmare of the Grid. The Buddhist messages are subtle but forceful, upon closer examination – emptiness and denial of the illusory self; meditation during turmoil and the transcendent power of selfless love...
