Propulsées du jour au lendemain en couverture du magazine, ces adolescentes deviennent les It Girls du 20e siècle. Entre une mère ex-Miss Tennessee avide de célébrité et un père aux abonnés absents, les trois filles sont une proie facile pour les requins du show-business. Download or read book International Exposure written by Lisa Z. Sigel and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2005-01-03 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Exposure demonstrates the wealth of desires woven into the fabric of European history: desires about empire and nation, about self and other, about plenty and dearth. By documenting the diverse meanings of pornography, senior scholars from across disciplines show the ways that sexuality became central to the individual, to the nation, and to the transnational character of modern society. The ten essays in the volume engage a rich array of topics, including obscenity in the German states, censorship in France’s Third Republic, “she-male” internet porn, the rise of incestuous longings in England, the place of the Hungarian video revolution in the global market, and the politics of pornography in Russia. Taken together, the essays illustrate the latest approaches to content, readership, form, and delivery in modern European pornography. A substantial discussion of the broad history and state of the field complements the ten in-depth case studies that examine a wide range of sources from literature to magazines, video to the internet. By tackling the highbrow and lowdown of the pornographic form, this volume lays the groundwork for the next surge of studies in the field.

Book A Susan Sontag Reader

Download or read book A Susan Sontag Reader written by Susan Sontag and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2014-09-09 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Susan Sontag occupies a special place in Modern American letters. She has become our most important critic, while her brilliant novels and short fiction are, at long last, getting the recognition they deserve. Sontag is above all a writer, which is only to say that, though the form may differ, there is an essential unity in all her work. The truth of this is perhaps more evident in A Susan Sontag Reader than in any of Sontag's individual books. The writer selected a sampling of her work, meaning the choice both to reflect accurately a career and also to guide the reader toward those qualities and concerns which she prizes in her own writing. A Susan Sontag Reader is arranged chronologically and draws on most of Sontag's books. There are selections from her two novels, The Benefactor and Death Kit, and from her collections of short stories, I, etcetera. The famous essays from the 1960s--"Against Interpretation," "Notes on Camp," and "On Style"--which established Sontag's reputation and can be fairly said to have shaped the cultural views of a generation are included, as are selctions from her two subsequent volumes of essays, Styles of Radical Will and Under the Sign of Satury. A part of Sontag's best-selling On Photography is also included. It is astonishing to read these works when they are detached from the books they appeared in and offered instead in the order in which Sontag wrote them. The connections between various literary forms, the progression of themes, are revealed in often startling ways. Moreover, Sontag has included a long interview in which she moves mroe informally over the whole range of her concerns and of her work. The volume ends with "Writing Itself," a previously uncollected essay on Roland Barthes which, in the eyes of many, is one of Sontag's finest achievements. This collection is, in a sense, both a self-potrait and a key for a reader to understand the work of one of the most imporant writers of our time.

Book Dictionary of Louisiana French

Download or read book Dictionary of Louisiana French written by Albert Valdman and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2010 with total page 934 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dictionary of Louisiana French (DLF) provides the richest inventory of French vocabulary in Louisiana and reflects precisely the speech of the period from 1930 to the present. This dictionary describes the current usage of French-speaking peoples in the five broad regions of South Louisiana: the coastal marshes, the banks of the Mississippi River, the central area, the north, and the western prairie. Data were collected during interviews from at least five persons in each of twenty-four areas in these regions. In addition to the data collected from fieldwork, the dictionary contains material compiled from existing lexical inventories, from texts published after 1930, and from archival recordings. The new authoritative resource, the DLF not only contains the largest number of words and expressions but also provides the most complete information available for each entry. Entries include the word in the conventional French spelling, the pronunciation (including attested variants), the part of speech classification, the English equivalent, and the word's use in common phrases. The DLF features a wealth of illustrative examples derived from fieldwork and textual sources and identification of the parish where the entry was collected or the source from which it was compiled. An English-to-Louisiana French index enables readers to find out how particular notions would be expressed in la Louisiane .

Book The Fiction of Andr Pieyre de Mandiargues

Download or read book The Fiction of Andr Pieyre de Mandiargues written by David J. Bond and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 1982-10-01 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Novelist, Poet, critic, and writer of short stories, Andre Pieyre de Mandiargues has won considerable praise in France for his highly imaginative work and exquisite poetic style. His 1967 novel La Marge won the Prix Goncourt. Following an introductory biographical chapter in this first full-length critical study of Mandiargues, David bond discusses Mandiargues’s novels and a selection of short stories, finding recurring thematic patterns in his haunting and magical dream world. Bond maintains that the French writer uses fantasy, symbolic statement, and mythical and frankly erotic motifs to explore some of the oldest, most persistent human preoccupation-time, destiny, the beyond, salvation, love-themes that for him defy logical expression. Bond concludes with a discussion of Mandiargues's relationship to other contemporary writers and especially to the surrealists. Bibliography, notes, and index are included, along with a rare painting of Mandiargues by his wife, Bona.
