Book The Exploration of the Colorado River and Its Canyons

Download or read book The Exploration of the Colorado River and Its Canyons written by John Wesley Powell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Exploration of the Colorado River and Its Canyons: Formerly Titled: Canyons of the Colorado N my return from the first exploration of the canyons of the Colorado, I found that our journey had been the theme of much newspaper writing. A story of disaster had been circulated, with many particulars of hardship and tragedy, so that it was currently believed throughout the United States that all the mem bers of the party were lost save one. A good friend of mine had gathered a great number of obituary notices, and it was interesting and rather flattering to me to discover the high esteem in which I had been held by the people of the United States. In my supposed death I had attained to a glory which I fear my continued life has not fully vindicated. The exploration was not made for adventure, but purely for scientific purposes, geographic and geologic, and I had no intention of writing an account of it, but only of recording the scientific results. Immediately on my return I was interviewed a number of times, and these interviews were published in the daily press; and here I supposed all interest in the exploration ended. But in 187 4 the editors of Scribner's Monthly requested me to publish a popular account of the Colorado exploration in that journal. To this I acceded and prepared four short articles, which were elaborately illustrated from photographs in my possession. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Through the Grand Canyon: Being the Record of the Pioneer Exploration of the Colorado River in 1869-70 In his student days Powell had made a specialty of what was then called natural history. When the war was over he ao cepted a professorship of geology in the II linois Wesleyan University, and later held a similar chair in the Illinois Normal Uni versity. In the summer of 1867 he initiated the practice of student field work by taking his class to the mountains of Colorado for geological exploration. It was on this trip that he formed the idea of exploring the canons of the Colorado River of the West. Having obtained funds from public institu tions of Illinois to outfit his little expedition, he started from Green River City, above the head of the Colorado proper, May 24, 1869, on one of the most hazardous adven tures in the history of exploration. He emerged from the Grand Canon on August 29, with five of the nine men he had started with. Four had deserted on the way, and three of these were killed by Indians. Book Grand Canon of the Colorado River Arizona Classic Reprint

Download or read book Grand Canon of the Colorado River Arizona Classic Reprint written by C. A. Higgins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grand Canon of the Colorado River, Arizona HE Colorado is one of the great rivers of North America. Formed in southern Utah by T the confluence of the Green and Grand, it intersects the northwestern corner of Arizona, and, becoming the eastern boundary of Nevada and California, flows southward until it reaches tidewater in the Gulf of California, Mexico. It drains a territory of square miles, and, traced back to the rise of its principal source, is miles long. At two points, the Needles and Yuma on the California boundary, it is crossed by a railroad. Elsewhere its course lies far from Caucasian settlements and far from the routes of common travel, in the heart of a vast region fenced on the one hand by arid plains and on the other by formidable mountains. The early Spanish explorers first reported it to the civilized world in 1540, two separate expeditions becoming acquainted with the river for a comparatively short distance above its mouth, and another, journeying from the Moqui Pueblos northwestward across the desert, obtaining the first view of the Big Cafion, failing in every effort to descend the canon wall, and Spying the river only from afar. Again, in 1776, a Spanish priest traveling southward through Utah struck off from the Virgen River to the southeast and found a practicable crossing at a point that still bears the name Vado de los Padres. For more than eighty years thereafter the Big Canon remained unvisited, except by the Indian, the Mormon herds man and the trapper, although the S'itgreaves expedition of 1851, journeying westward, struck the Colorado about one hundred and fifty milespabove Yuma, and Lieutenant Whipple in 1854 made a survey for a practicable 'railroad route along the thirty-fifth parallel, where the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad has since been constructed. The establishment of military posts in New Mexico and Utah having made desirable the use of a water-way for the cheap trans portation of supplies, in 1857 the War Department dispatched an expedition in charge of Lieutenant Ives to explore the Colorado as far from its mouth as navigation should be found practicable. Ives ascended the river in a specially constructed steamboat to the head of Black Canon, a few miles below the confluence of the Virgen River'in Nevada, where further navi gation became impossible; then, returning to the Needles, he set off across the country toward the northeast. He reached the Big Canon at Diamond Creek and at Cataract Creek in the spring of 1858, and from the latter point made a wide southward detour around the San Francisco peaks, thence northeastward to the Moqui Pueblos, thence eastward to Fort Defiance and so back to civilization. Book Synthesis and Management Implications of the Colorado River Research Program Classic Reprint

Download or read book Synthesis and Management Implications of the Colorado River Research Program Classic Reprint written by R. Roy Johnson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-30 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Synthesis and Management Implications of the Colorado River Research Program Major John Wesley Powell led a small scientific expedition on the first trip down the remote and heretofore unexplored length of the Colorado River and through the foreboding depths of the series of its mighty canyons in 1869. During the subsequent 80 years, no more than 100 venturesome river runners followed his pioneering course. For decades, these stretches of the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon region continued to remain virtually untouched and undisturbed by the activities of modern man. In 1935 changes began; waters of Lake Mead, created by Hoover Dam, intruded for miles into the lower reaches of the Grand Canyon and made this section of the canyon readily accessible by boat. Upper portions of the canyon remained essentially unimpacted by the few boaters who passed through. Here too, however, the situation began to change at first, gradually and then with dramatic acceleration. Bolstered by an awakening challenge of the thrills and delights of river running and the advent of the use of the rubber raft, with its multi passenger capacity, the numbers of boaters increased. Even so, by 1959 the river was annually floated by less than 100 individuals. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
