Book excerpt: For the last twenty years The Wire has fearlessly bypassed fashion in it's search to expose the most innovative, radical, and compelling music from every genre all across the world. As listeners have grown increasingly eclectic and adventurous in their tastes, The Wire has emerged as the most authoritative source on modern music. In Undercurrents some of the best music writers of our time uncover the hidden wiring of the past century's most influential music. Ian Penman discusses how the microphone transformed the human voice and made phantom presences of great singers such as Billie Holiday, Robert Johnson, and Brian Wilson. Christoph Cox demonstrates how the pioneers of live electronic music, the West Coast ensemble Sonic Arts Union, redefined virtuosity for the electronic age. Philip Smith and Peter Shapiro examine Harry Smith's Smithsonian Anthology of American Folk Music, which led to a massive reappraisal of musical values that went far beyond the folk music revival.

Book excerpt: Drawings, personal photographs, documents, and ephemera by underground cartoonist, artist, writer, musician, and amateur magician Savage Pencil. Pulled together from his massive archive of drawings, personal photographs, documents, and ephemera, alongside a new, extensive interview conducted by author and legendary esoteric bibliographer Timothy D'Arch Smith, Rated SavX is an access-all-areas trawl through the life and work of the artist known as Savage Pencil. Underground cartoonist, artist, writer, musician, and amateur magician Savage Pencil has been conjuring up images and making a noise since 1977. Beginning with his “Rock 'N' Roll Zoo” strip for 1970s music paper Sounds to his drawing 'Trip or Squeek” for The Wire magazine, his instantly recognizable, delirious, and demented images have come to define their own form of acerbic graphic critique and satire. Savage Pencil has also designed album covers, T-shirts, posters and other merchandise for bands including Sonic Youth, Big Black, The Fall, Sunn O))), Coil, and Earth, and a host of obscure punk rockers, metal gurus, and noise addicts. As a result, Savage Pencil's drawings have become intrinsically linked with the sonic ideas that were being transmitted on such records as Sonic Youth's Death Valley '69 and Big Black's Headache.

Book Looking for Smoke Adventures of an Aerial Observer

Download or read book Looking for Smoke Adventures of an Aerial Observer written by JB Poet and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2006-02-22 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking for Smoke Adventures of an Aerial Observer Description After working almost 20 summers for the US Forest Service, mostly as a wildland firefighter, Bob became an Aerial Observer on the Willamette National Forest in Oregon. This is like a book of short stories. Each story is an account of an incident that happened during the years he was an Observer. Using almost 100 photographs Bob illustrates some of his memories from a job in which he looked for wildfire smoke during the late 1980s. There are photographs of lookouts, small fires, and aircraft. There are photographs of large fires with awesome flame lengths. There are beautiful pictures of mountains, lakes and forest. Fire lookout structures are captured from many angles. One could enjoy this book by only looking at pictures. Bob’s oldest son, John, joined him as an Aerial Observer in 1987. Two years later John, who worked year around for the USFS, became the Lead Observer. Bob was transferred to Eugene to be a radio dispatcher during the summer months. The scenery they flew over is spectacular, from majestic peaks like 10,495 foot Mt. Jefferson in the north to the Calapooya Mountains over 100 miles to the south. In between are the Three Sisters and many smaller but appealing peaks. There are almost 400 lakes, including spectacular Waldo Lake. Waldo is the second deepest natural lake in Oregon at 410 feet, behind Crater Lake. It is one of the most pure lakes in the world, with water sometimes compared to that which is distilled. The clarity of the water is renowned. Waldo Lake covers almost ten square miles. Included on the Willamette are almost two million acres of forestland, thousands of which are untouched by man, not visible to most folks because there are no roads and few trails at the higher elevations. Flying over this forest is an optical pleasure. The Willamette has over 1,500 miles of streams and rivers, including the headwaters of the Willamette, Santiam and McKenzie. It has a diverse variety of more than a dozen conifer tree species, including large stands of Douglas Fir, which is Oregon’s official State tree. One can find giants of this species as big as eight feet in diameter. The Willamette is rich in fish and wildlife, including Steelhead, bass, Chinook and Kokanee salmon and many kinds of trout. Blacktail deer are common and one may also spot Roosevelt Elk, cougar, black bear and even Mule deer near the crest. The wolverine is believed to be making a comeback after disappearing from the Cascade Range for many years. Even though the scenery is spectacular, the Detection flights often consisted of long periods of no action. Mixed in were frantic times of lightning started fires all around. A few times Bob was a close-up witness to awe-inspiring demonstrations of Mother Nature’s power in lightning storms and fires that had gone beyond the point of big. Bob and his pilots often used their flight route to bring newspapers and C.A.R.E. packages to lookouts far from civilization and creature comforts. Bob had the privilege of teaching in an outstanding school, Pleasant Hill Junior High. The Administration was superior, the Staff spectacular, the students striking and the parents especially supportive. Bob’s summer job was the same; wonderful people for whom and with whom to work. Not many men are so fortunate! Bob retired after 28 years of teaching and from dispatching at the end of the 1997 season. At that time he began a wonderful period of about six years raising two little boys, unrelated to him. Squeek and Boca were with Papa 24/7. He loves them as if they were his own. He is also very proud of them. This book is dedicated to Jacob and Andrew Thompson. His first book is dedicated to his four sons, John, Tim, Mark and Dan. The next book will be dedicated to his grandchildren, Jordan, Kaley, Andrew, Jeremy, Stephen and Annika. (So far.) They are all people for which their parents and grandparents can

Book excerpt: Who doesn’t wish to share his or her home with a cage full of “Furry Mongolian Friends” aka gerbils!? Author Susan Anastasi certain does! She describes these irresistible critters as “quiet, clean, friendly, curious, active, and easy-to-please.” In deciding whether the gerbil is for you, Anastasi offers this advice: “If you are looking for a seemingly limitless cache of cuteness—from their long, fanning whiskers and large almond-shaped eyes to heir bunnylike hind legs and tufted tail tips—then gerbils are for you!” Clearly bitten by the gerbil bug, the author begins by providing some basic natural history about gerbils, their origins on the Mongolian range, and an overview of their behaviors. Anastasi defends her favorite pocket pet and asserts that the gentle gerbil does not deserve its Latin name (Meriones ungiculatus), which translates as “clawed warrior.” Filled with terrific color photographs, Gerbils summarizes the basic needs of these adorable rodents, specifically addressing their housing requirements, the cost and commitment involved, and their interactions with children and other pets. The following are devoted to purchasing a healthy gerbil from a pet shop, hobby breeder, or shelter; introducing the gerbil to the home; housing and feeding; taming and handling the pet gerbil; health considerations and potential household hazards; breeding and raising the young; and exhibiting gerbils at shows. The discussion on housing covers the selection of the ideal enclosure, basic housing setup, accessories, safety, and a guide to cleaning the tank. The chapter “Taming and Handling Your Gerbils” offers a step-by-step socialization process to acclimate the gerbil to its new handler and surroundings plus instructions for handling the gerbil and discouraging nipping. All keepers will be interested in the chapter on keeping gerbils healthy through smart preventative care; topics covered include allergies; broken limbs and head injury; teeth, tail, and ear problems; dehydration; diarrhea; heat stroke; hypothermia; mites, and more. Gerbil enthusiasts who are looking to become gerbil midwives will find complete instructions for breeding and raising pups (baby gerbils) in the chapter about reproduction. It covers planning a litter, setting up a breeding tank, mating, caring for the pregnant mom, birthing, fostering, growth cycles, weaning, handling pups, and more. The chapter “Fun with Gerbils” offers ideas for games, art projects, photographing, and training gerbils to do seven fun tricks. Resources include lists of publications, clubs, organizations, and websites. Glossary of terms and index included.
