Book Recondite Harmony

  • Release : 2012
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 356 pages

Download or read book Recondite Harmony written by Deborah Burton and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who is Puccini? Most debates about the composer are focused on his cultural and musical identity: is his music traditional or progressive? The thesis of this volume is that the diametrically opposed forces of the traditional and the progressive live together in Puccini's music, embedded deeply within his harmonic constructs and in many musical parameters. Recondite Harmony is a study of all of Puccini's operas examined through a primarily analytic lens. It offers essays on salient aspects of each of the operas while tracing in them both progressive and traditional elements. The volume is divided into two parts: in the first, approaches that inform the entire corpus of Puccini's operas are examined. The second half of the book is devoted to brief essays discussing interesting aspects of each of his operas. Techniques in each opus that merit analytic attention are highlighted and discussed in relation to the drama at hand, individuating more fully musical aspects special to each score. Included are also previously unpublished source material and autograph sketches.

From Bach to Berlioz, Glinka to Gershwin, Stravinsky to Shostakovich, and everyone in between, the Complete Classical Music Guide contains more than three hundred composer profiles, and offers a clear definition of the particular styles and characteristics of seven key eras: Early Music (1000-1600); The Baroque Era (1600-1750); The Classical Era (1750-1820); The Romantic Era (1810-1920); Romantic Opera (1810-1920); National Schools (1830-1950); and Modern Music (1900-). The Complete Classical Music Guide also includes a timeline that charts the evolution of musical styles and forms, instruments, and provides explanations of the building blocks of music — melody, harmony, rhythm, texture, form, tempo, and dynamics. Book Puccini

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mosco Carner
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 1959
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 546 pages

Download or read book Puccini written by Mosco Carner and published by . This book was released on 1959 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life and works of Giacomo Puccini, composer of La Boheme, Madama Butterfly, Tosca, Turandot, and other universal operatic favorites, are here presented in detail for the first time in any language in a book unlikely ever to be superseded. A full-length recounting of Puccini's fascinating life, rich in previously unused materials, is followed by detailed analyses of each of his operas and other compositions. The author, a Viennese conductor and musicologist, has performed this monumental task with knowledge, grace, and insight. The biography brings to life a curious, somewhat ambiguous man whose greatly successful career was marked alternately by storms, tragedies, and triumphs, a genius who somehow missed the final greatness. His relations with his family, colleagues, librettists, singers, conductors--and his peculiar, convoluted relationship with his wife--have some of the very drama that has made his operas so enduringly popular. Puccini's letters are quoted extensively, many of them in English for the first time. The opera analyses, constantly evaluating the music in terms of drama and libretto, are unique in musical literature and in their completeness and illumination. They are, furthermore, judicious and soundly musical, for instead of accepting ready-made opinions (many of which are quoted), they go directly to the scores themselves.
