Book excerpt: Trindade, sometimes called Trinidad, is a small island in the South Atlantic 700 miles east of Rio de Janeiro. In October 1781 George Johnstone, former governor of West Florida, attempted to found a colony on the island. During the attempt one ship, the H.M.S. Rattlesnake, was wrecked. Johnstone went back to England to gather more support for settlement. His court-martial overshadowed his plans and the settlers were forgotten. In May 1782 Captain James Burney was ordered to rescue the settlers on his way to the East Indies. This manuscript is an eyewitness account by a member of Burney's crew and comments on the island's suitability for settlement. Since 1896 Trindade has been a part of Brazil.
