Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India’s Kochi-Muziris Biennale has been described as one of the most significant newly emergent biennales, alongside Shanghai, Sharjah and Dakar. However, there have been few sustained and critical studies of these events as specific sites of production and reception of contemporary art. This book, engaging with the Kochi Biennale, provides detailed examination of what the editors term as the ‘biennale effect’ — a layered contestation of place, economics, art and politics. It presents a close reading of the unique context of the biennale as well as sets out a broader critical framework for understanding global contemporary art and its effects. Replete with illustrations, this book will serve as an important and rare resource for scholars and researchers of contemporary art, art history, visual cultures, and media studies.

Book excerpt: Transcending Reality Charlie Chaplin once said that nobody lives long enough to be anything but an amateur. This expression unequivocally applies to artists, for creating art is a continuous process of learning and discovery. In order to bring the fascinating riches of artistic creativity within the reach of the mankind, ANOKHII has collaborated with artists from around the world in compiling this book. My desire is to arouse creativity and evoke a feeling of depth by bringing the plethoric wealth of art into this book. By faithfully rendering the simplicity and richness of these paintings, this book intends to preserve the ‘universal language’ of art. Painting is produced when diverse range of colours harmonise together. By blending all the remarkable paintings, I wish to create harmony. In Carl Sagan’s words, ‘In the vastness of space and the immensity of time, it is my joy..’ to edit this book. Editing this book has been a huge task. I feel fortunate to have worked on it and want to thank all artists for their contributions, thoughtful opinions and patience. I hope that this book will be an ever-present source of inspiration, offering the remarkable panorama of artists around the world. To anyone who gives close mindfulness, the insights and visions contained in these paintings will extend way beyond to define what art truly is. I extend my sincere thanks and gratitude to all the valuable personalities who supported me in releasing the book

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the writings based on factual incidents, space and time are the relevant factors when describing it in the view of making it into a historical action. Also the background of the writer, the writer’s wisdom on the particular issue describing and the writer’s ability on narration of incidents accurately bound to space and time, his psychological attitude towards the happenings in his surroundings most of the time without his own involvement are certain elements of relevance here. Even though the historical happenings are of unique characteristics, and its nature of existence with similar altitude unchangingly forever, the sincere studious activities towards its objectiveness can establish the real time facts even to the future generations ever after centuries. When we engage in deep studies with curiosity and a special inborn interest towards art, the studious beings get a clear idea of the differences between factual incidences and documented evidences of incidents. These kinds of arrivals at falsely fabricated ideas on the historical scenarios, follows loss of believability on documentations and established versions of incidents. The process of historical development has attracted me because it is propagated to maintain time, space objectivity bound relations towards various objectivities. These are some of the factors that directed and confirmed my arrival at these kinds of creative destinations.

Book The Bloomsbury Handbook of Postcolonial Print Cultures

Download or read book The Bloomsbury Handbook of Postcolonial Print Cultures written by Toral Jatin Gajarawala and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-08-10 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The texts that make up postcolonial print cultures are often found outside the archival catalogue, and in lesser-examined repositories such as personal collections, the streets, or appendages to established collections. This volume examines the published and unpublished writing, magazines, pamphlets, paratexts, advertisements, cartoons, radio, and street art that serve as the intellectual forces behind opposition to colonial orders, as meditations on the futures of embryonic nation states, and as visions of new forms of equality. The print cultures examined here are necessarily anti-institutional; they serve as a counterpoint to the colonial archive and, relatedly, to more traditional genres and text formats coming out of large-scale publishers. This means that much of the primary material analyzed in this book has not been scrutinized before. Many of these print productions articulate collective liberation projects with origins in the grassroots. They include debates around the shape of the postcolonial nation and the new state formation that necessarily draw on a diverse and contentious public sphere of opinion. Their rhetoric ranges from the reformist to the revolutionary. Reflecting the diversity, indeed the disorderliness, of postcolonial print cultures this book covers local, national, and transnational cultures from Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas. Its wide-ranging essays offer a nuanced and, taken together, a definitive (though that is not to say comprehensive or systematic) study of a global phenomenon: postcolonial print cultures as a distinct literary field. The chapters recover the efforts of writers, readers and publishers to produce a postcolonialism 'from below', and thereby offer a range of fresh perspectives on the meaning and history of postcolonialism.

Download or read book Biennial Boom written by Paloma Checa-Gismero and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2024-07-05 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Biennial Boom, Paloma Checa-Gismero traces an archeology of contemporary art biennials to uncover the processes that prompted these exhibitions to become the global art world’s defining events at the end of the twentieth century. Returning to the early post-Cold War years, Checa-Gismero examines the early iterations of three well-known biennials at the borders of North Atlantic liberalism: the Bienal de La Habana, inSITE, and Manifesta. She draws on archival and oral history fieldwork in Cuba, Mexico, the US/Mexico borderlands, and the Netherlands, showing how these biennials reflected a post-Cold War optimism for a pacified world by which artistic and knowledge production would help mend social, political, and cultural divisions. Checa-Gismero argues that, in reflecting this optimism, biennials facilitated the conversion of subaltern aesthetic genealogies into forms that were legible to a nascent cosmopolitan global elite—all under the pretense of cultural exchange. By outlining how early biennials set the basis for what is now recognized as “global contemporary art,” Checa-Gismero intervenes in previous accounts of the contemporary art world in order to better understand how it became the exclusionary, rarified institution of today.

Download or read book Worldly Affiliations written by Sonal Khullar and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2015-05-02 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of art, the Paris-trained artist Amrita Sher-Gil wrote in 1936, is to "create the forms of the future” by “draw[ing] its inspiration from the present.” Through art, new worlds can be imagined into existence as artists cultivate forms of belonging and networks of association that oppose colonialist and nationalist norms. Drawing on Edward Said’s notion of “affiliation” as a critical and cultural imperative against empire and nation-state, Worldly Affiliations traces the emergence of a national art world in twentieth-century India and emphasizes its cosmopolitan ambitions and orientations. Sonal Khullar focuses on four major Indian artists—Sher-Gil, Maqbool Fida Husain, K. G. Subramanyan, and Bhupen Khakhar—situating their careers within national and global histories of modernism and modernity. Through a close analysis of original artwork, archival materials, artists’ writing, and period criticism, Khullar provides a vivid historical account of the state and stakes of artistic practice in India from the late colonial through postcolonial periods. She discusses the shifting terms of Indian artists’ engagement with the West—an urgent yet fraught project in the wake of British colonialism—and to a lesser extent with African and Latin American cultural movements such as Négritude and Mexican muralism. Written in a lucid and engaging style, this book links artistic developments in India to newly emerging histories of modern art in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Drawing on original research in the twenty-first-century art world, Khullar shows the persistence of modernism in contemporary art from India and compares its function to Walter Benjamin’s ruin. In the work of contemporary artists from India, modernism is the ground from which to imagine futures. This richly illustrated study juxtaposes little-known, rarely seen, or previously unpublished works of modern and contemporary art with historical works, popular or mass-reproduced images, and documentary photographs. Its innovative art program renders newly visible the aesthetic and political achievements of Indian modernism.
