Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a complete history of the US Fleet Ballistic Missile programme from its inception in the 1950s and the development of Polaris to the deployment of Trident II in 1990. Writing in an accessible yet scholarly manner, Graham Spinardi bases his historical documentation of FBM development on interviews with many of the key participants. His study confronts a central issue: is technology simply a tool used to achieve the goals of society, or is it an autonomous force in shaping that society? FBM accuracy evolved from the city-busting retaliatory capability of Polaris to the silo-busting 'first strike' potential of Trident. Is this a case of technology 'driving' the arms race, or simply the intended product of political decisions? The book provides a comprehensive survey of the literature looking at the role of technology in the arms race, and seeks to explain technological development using a 'sociology of technology' approach.

Book Building the Trident Network

Download or read book Building the Trident Network written by Maggie Mort and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2008-02-15 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Building the Trident Network, Maggie Mort approaches the United Kingdom's Trident submarine and missile system as a sociotechnical network. Drawing on the sociology of scientific and technical knowledge and on actor-network theory, Mort recounts how the Trident program was stabilized in the United Kingdom and brought into "successful" production. She uncovers the nature of this success by retelling unofficial histories of Trident, of production roads not taken, and of potential technological "distractions." The production of Trident, she shows, was not inevitable but contingent and problematic. Using material from interviews and local texts, Mort explores the emergence of a counternetwork in the form of a workers' campaign for alternative technologies. She develops concepts of "disenrollment" and "absent intermediaries," in which redundant workers and marginalized technologies serve to discipline and reinforce the dominant network as production shrinks. She also examines the maintenance of the barrier between the technical and the social/political in this context. The management of uncertainties within the Trident production program emerges as critical to its successful completion.

Book excerpt: While it was still in the development stage, Rear Admiral Albert Kelln predicted that Trident would "Extend the seabased deterrent survivability we currently enjoy into the 21st century." On the other hand, the Congressional Research Service's Brief on United States defense industrial preparedness contended that the Trident project appeared "to demonstrate all three categories of symptoms mentioned . . . delay, severe cost overruns, and poor workmanship." Dalgleish and Schweikart seek to resolve these points of view by an in depth analysis of every aspect of the submarine program, including the political struggles involved in activating the program, the construction process, the vessel itself, improvements in submarine technology that will affect it, and descriptions of its base. They trace the history of the Trident submarine program from its beginning as a part of the "STRAT-X" study of 1967to the present. Because cost has so frequently been the overriding concern during the Trident's development, the authors provide a cost comparison of the Trident system to several other systems. They conclude that on balance the Trident system has not been exceedingly costly.

This book was released on 1984 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Trident system consists of submarines, missiles and associated weapon equipment, and shore support facilities. Trident I missiles have been or are being in stalled on the first eight submarines. Trident II missiles will be installed on the ninth and subsequent submarines and will eventually replace the Trident I missiles on the first eight submarines. The Trident II is to provide submarine ballistic missile forces with improved accuracy and a capability to destroy hard targets. The eventual cost of the Trident system is uncertain because the Department of Defense has not established the number of submarines and missiles to be acquired. GAO recommends that the department do so. GAO also recommends that the department change its reporting to the Congress as a means of better monitor costs and other aspects of the Trident system acquisition. (Author).

Book Performing Nuclear Weapons

Download or read book Performing Nuclear Weapons written by Paul Beaumont and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-23 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the UK’s nuclear weapon policy, focusing in particular on how consecutive governments have managed to maintain the Trident weapon system. The question of why states maintain nuclear weapons typically receives short shrift: its security, of course. The international is a perilous place, and nuclear weapons represent the ultimate self-help device. This book seeks to unsettle this complacency by re-conceptualizing nuclear weapon-armed states as nuclear regimes of truth and refocusing on the processes through which governments produce and maintain country-specific discourses that enable their continued possession of nuclear weapons. Illustrating the value of studying nuclear regimes of truth, the book conducts a discourse analysis of the UK’s nuclear weapons policy between 1980 and 2010. In so doing, it documents the sheer imagination and discursive labour required to sustain the positive value of nuclear weapons within British politics, as well as providing grounds for optimism regarding the value of the recent treaty banning nuclear weapons.

Book The Future of the United Kingdom s Nuclear Deterrent

Download or read book The Future of the United Kingdom s Nuclear Deterrent written by Great Britain: Ministry of Defence and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2006-12-04 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this White Paper, the Government reaffirms its commitment to maintain Britain's independent nuclear capability by investing in a new generation of ballistic missile-carrying submarines and extending the life of the Trident D5 missile. However, in order to ensure the deterrent system is the minimum necessary to provide effective deterrence, there will be a further 20 per cent reduction in operationally available warheads. The Government believes this decision balances the interests of national security against its undertaking to work towards multilateral disarmament and to counter nuclear proliferation, and it is fully compatible with Britain's international legal obligations. The White Paper discusses the policy context and sets out the reasons why decisions on the future of the UK's nuclear deterrent system are needed now, as well as considering the various options and their costs, and the industrial aspects involved in building the new submarines in the UK.

Book Tackling Trident

Download or read book Tackling Trident written by Stellan Vinthagen and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Tackling Trident is about two unique academic conferences in which an international group of academics, while discussing scientific conference papers, simultaneously blockaded Faslane Naval Base, home of the UKʼs Trident system of nuclear weapons of mass-destruction, in Scotland, in January and June 2007. This book presents the academics that took part in the innovative ʻAcademic Conference Blockadesʼ, the conference papers that outlines the scientific rational behind their nuclear resistance, and the year long campaign Faslane 365 in which this ʻcritique in actionʼ occurred. Tackling Trident is a book written by engaged academics that tackles nuclear weapon issues, Trident, academic responsibility, and possibilities for academic, personal and social change. This book is a fundamental challenge to the suggested scientific legitimacy of nuclear weapon ʼdefenceʼ, and the suggested political and moral ʼneutralityʼ of academia." -- Back cover.
