Book A Literature Search and Critical Analysis of Biological Trickling Filter Studies

Download or read book A Literature Search and Critical Analysis of Biological Trickling Filter Studies written by Dow Chemical Company. Functional Products and Systems Department and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A two volume compilation, review and critique of the literature on biological trickling filter studies and related pollution abatement processes have been made. In the report, the literature review and critical analysis, is divided into: Introduction, definitions, history and background theory of the trickling filter process; Plant design, materials of construction, operation, maintenance and performance; Trickling filter research and development approaches, ecology, and patents, and Applications of trickling filter to specific industrial wastes. Based on the review, several general conclusions were drawn. There is no well-defined theory of design and operation. Much published work was redundant, and European efforts were not readily accepted in the United States, and vice versa. The literature reflects cycles of interest in trickling filters. The process is not applicable to all pollution problems, but its shock survival capabilities and rapid flow-through time are definite advantages which cannot be overlooked in any design of a waste treatment facility. In Vol. 2 a bibliography of 5,665 references relating to biological trickling filters studies is presented. Author references are listed in alphabetical sequence based upon the surname of the author. Anonymous articles are listed after the alphabetical author sequence, according to the alphabetical sequence of the journal, and chronologically within the journal.

Book Bioreactors for Waste Gas Treatment

Download or read book Bioreactors for Waste Gas Treatment written by C. Kennes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Air pollution, a major concern at the end of the 20th century, still remains a significant problem to be solved today. Traditionally, industrial waste gases have primarily been treated through physical or chemical methods. The search for new, efficient, and cost-effective alternative technologies has led to the development and, more recently, the improvement of gas phase bioreactors. This book is the first single text to provide a complete, comprehensive picture of all major biological reactors suitable for solving air pollution problems. The text describes the main features and covers the major aspects, from microbiological to engineering, as well as economic aspects, of the different types of bioreactors. The book also presents an in-depth review of the subject, from fundamental bench-scale research to industrial field applications related to the operation of full-scale systems successfully treating polluted air in Europe and the United States. Material dedicated to more conventional non-biological technologies has also been included, to provide a complete overview of the different alternative treatment processes. Audience: The different chapters have been written by international experts, as a result of a fruitful collaboration between European and American scientists and engineers. The resulting text is a high quality, valuable reference tool for a variety of readers, including graduate and postgraduate students, researchers, professors, engineers, and those professionals who are interested in environmental engineering and, more specifically, in innovative air pollution control technologies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A clear, straightforward presentation of concepts and issues in aquatic pollution This comprehensive introductory text presents a systematic study of pollution in oceans, lakes, streams, and underground aquifers. In a clear, straightforward style that is easily accessible to nonscientists, it describes the sources, features, and effects of thirteen different types of aquatic pollution. Fully updated to reflect current understanding and recent developments, this Third Edition of Aquatic Pollution covers every aspect of pollution associated with urban runoff, acid rain, sewage disposal, pesticides, oil spills, nutrient loading, and more. Case studies of major pollution sites such as Lake Erie, Three Mile Island, and the Rocky Mountain Arsenal help to illustrate points made in the general discussion. Important features of this new edition include: * Updated discussions of nonpoint source pollution, industrial pollution, thermal pollution, pathogens, metals, plastics, and more * New case studies of Chesapeake Bay and the Exxon Valdez * Beginning-of-chapter outlines * End-of-chapter study questions * New special section on units of measurement * Four chapters on the fundamentals of ecology and toxicology Aquatic Pollution, Third Edition, is a first-rate teaching and learning tool for courses in environmental science, zoology, oceanography, biology, and civil or sanitary engineering. It is also an excellent primer for policymakers and activists focused on environmental issues.

Book Handbook of Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant Operations Second Edition

Download or read book Handbook of Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant Operations Second Edition written by Frank R. Spellman and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2008-11-18 with total page 868 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hailed on its initial publication as a real-world, practical handbook, the second edition of Handbook of Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant Operations continues to make the same basic point: water and wastewater operators must have a basic skill set that is both wide and deep. They must be generalists, well-rounded in the sciences, cyber operations, math operations, mechanics, technical concepts, and common sense. With coverage that spans the breadth and depth of the field, the handbook explores the latest principles and technologies and provides information necessary to prepare for licensure exams. Expanded from beginning to end, this second edition provides a no-holds-barred look at current management issues and includes the latest security information for protecting public assets. It presents in-depth coverage of management aspects and security needs and a new chapter covering the basics of blueprint reading. The chapter on water and wastewater mathematics has tripled in size and now contains an additional 200 problems and 350 math system operational problems with solutions. The manual examines numerous real-world operating scenarios, such as the intake of raw sewage and the treatment of water via residual management, and each scenario includes a comprehensive problem-solving practice set. The text follows a non-traditional paradigm based on real-world experience and proven parameters. Clearly written and user friendly, this revision of a bestseller builds on the remarkable success of the first edition. This book is a thorough compilation of water science, treatment information, process control procedures, problem-solving techniques, safety and health information, and administrative and technological trends.

Book Upgrading Wastewater Treatment Plants Second Edition

Download or read book Upgrading Wastewater Treatment Plants Second Edition written by Glen T. Daigger and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998-06-09 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FROM THE PREFACE In this time of dwindling budgets, increasing service needs, and increasing regulatory requirements, wastewater treatment professionals are continually called upon to upgrade their wastewater treatment plants. To do so efficiently and effectively, one must develop a clear approach to use in upgrading a plant and have the proper tools available to implement that approach. This book is meant to assist readers in developing and implementing their upgrading projects. First, Chapter 1 details the upgrading approach. The tools to be used are presented in Chapters 2 through 6. Finally, in Chapter 7, six case histories are presented to illustrate the plant upgrading techniques presented in the previous chapters. Through this book, the authors hope to assist readers in meeting their upgrade requirements, while making the most efficient use of the resources at hand.
