Book Deviant Design

  • Author : Craig Martin
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing

  • ISBN : 1350035327
  • Pages : 201 pages

Download or read book Deviant Design written by Craig Martin and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-07-14 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Craig Martin addresses the transgressive or deviant aspects of design: design that straddles the divide between the licit and illicit, the legal and illegal, in a variety of ways. Martin argues that design is not necessarily for the social good, but that it is immersed in the social realm in all its contradictions and confusions. Through a series of case studies he explores a wide range of social practices that employ illicit forms of design thinking, including: early computer hacking and present-day hacker culture in which everyday objects are repurposed and deliberately misused; the cultures of reproduction, counterfeit and pirated versions of classic and luxury designs; and the use of material practices by smugglers to conceal drugs within consumer goods and luggage. Deviant Design contends that these amateur and illicit practices challenge the normative idea of the professional designer or maker. Rather than being reliant on the services of institutionalized design professionals, the adhocist practitioner displays forms of innovative design knowledge in understanding how artefacts have an inherent potential to be misused or repurposed.

With a pretty wife, a new baby, and a job reporting for the Washington Herald, Jonathan Seede is the picture of urban respectability. Deviant Behavior is a street-level, symphonic portrait of an American city.” —George Pelecanos, author of The Night Gardener

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Workplace crimes are never far from the news. From major scandals like Enron to violent crimes committed by co-workers to petty theft of office supplies, deviant and criminal behavior is common in the workplace. Each and every one of us need to learn our proper place in life and in the world: To be a leader, a follower, or to just stay well out of the way of both of the others. In America, we are constitutionally granted the rights of Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Read and listen closely; we are not guaranteed any degree of happiness, only the freedom to seek happiness on our own.

Book Fdr s New Deal

    Book Details:
  • Author : William N. Spencer
  • Publisher : Xlibris Corporation
  • Release : 2019-12-04
  • ISBN : 1796075566
  • Pages : 191 pages

Download or read book Fdr s New Deal written by William N. Spencer and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2019-12-04 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History is an account, either verbal or written, which describes past events, good or bad. In truth, most recorded history is a mostly false narrative of mostly unimportant occurrences which are the doings of czars, despots, and tyrants and their lackey soldiers. For the most part, right or wrong, history has always been written by the winners—of whatever contest. And therefore, since the ‘losers’ are irrelevant and meaningless, it may then take society many decades, or more, to finally learn that most things were done, not really as the supporters and academics had recorded them for posterity. History is more than just learning names, dates, and places. Real history is knowing why certain events happened at a certain given time in a particular certain place. And real history is admitting that the supposedly ‘greatest’ saviors of humanity were really mankind’s ‘greatest’ purveyors of human misery.

  • Author : William N. Spencer
  • Publisher : Xlibris Corporation
  • Release : 2015-04-22
  • ISBN : 1503517934
  • Pages : 158 pages

Download or read book Equality written by William N. Spencer and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-04-22 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Equality is the state or quality of being the same in quality or degree, evenly proportioned, uniform in operation or effect. In America today, there are many people who pursue their dream of having each and every one of us equal in every way. How naive, how misguided, how dreadfully misinformed and uneducated physiologically, psychologically, and anatomically! Yet this is the prevailing culture in many of our political circles today. Far too many laws and regulations are now written or being interpreted as some select groups of people being more equal or less equal than other non-select groups of American citizens. Perhaps our constitution and bill of rights need to be amended to satisfy this new meaning of equality.

Book Received Wisdom Kernels of Truth and Boundary

Download or read book Received Wisdom Kernels of Truth and Boundary written by Daniel J. Svyantek and published by IAP. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of the Research in Organizational Sciences is entitled “Received Wisdom, Kernels of Truth, and Boundary Conditions in Organizational Studies”. Received wisdom is knowledge imparted to people by others and is based on authority and tenacity as sources of human knowledge. Authority refers to the acceptance of knowledge as truth because of the position and credibility of the knowledge source. Tenacity refers to the continued presentation of a particular bit of information by a source until this bit of information is accepted as true by receivers. The problem for organizational studies, however, is that this received wisdom often becomes unquestioned assumptions which guide interpretation of the world and decisions made about the world. Received wisdom, therefore, may lead to organizational practices which provide little or no benefit to the organization and, potentially, negative organizational effects, because this received wisdom is no longer valid. The 14 papers in this volume all, in some way, strive to question received wisdom and present alternatives which expand our understanding of organizational behavior in some way. The chapters in this volume each strive to present new ways of understanding organizational constructs, and in so doing reveal how received wisdom has often led to confirmation bias in organizational science. The knowledge that some perceived truths are actually the products of received wisdom and do not stand up to close scrutiny shakes up things within research areas previously thought settled allowing new perspectives on organizational science to emerge.
