Download or read book Tribological Properties at 25 C of Seven Polyimide Films Bonded to 440 C High Temperature Stainless Steel written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-21 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tribological properties of seven polyimide films applied to 440 C high temperature stainless steel substrates were studied at 25 C with a pin-on-disk type of friction and were apparatus. The polyimides fell into two groups according to friction and wear properties. Group I polyimides had slightly lower friction but much higher wear than group II polyimides. The wear mechanism was predominately adhesion, but the wear particles were larger for group I polyimides. For most of the polyimides the transfer films consisted of clumps of compacted wear particles. One polyimide composition produced a very thin transfer film that sheared plastically in the contact area. Fusaro, R. L. Glenn Research Center NASA-TP-1944, E-758

Book Encyclopedia of Tribology

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Tribology written by C. Kajdas and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1990-10-09 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The multidisciplinary nature of tribology, the conflicting theories and approaches to it found in the literature, plus the fact that definitions of the same phenomenon often differ widely, prompted the authors to compile this work. The aim of this encyclopedia is to provide information on specific tribological terms. The entire field of tribology encompassing lubrication, friction and wear, i.e. the science and technology of interacting surfaces in relative motion, is covered. An extensive description of the chemical and biological aspects of tribology is given, including a wide range of current references and authors. The reader is also referred to relevant literature for most of the terms listed. The information presented has been made as up-to-date as possible, taking into account both the theoretical and practical nature of the subject. The encyclopedia will be an indispensable reference source in the work of engineers, chemists, physicists, metallurgists, materials and surface scientists, biotechnologists, as well as research workers in these fields.

Book Comparison of the Tribological Properties at 25 C of Seven Different Polyimide Films Bonded to 301 Stainless Steel

Download or read book Comparison of the Tribological Properties at 25 C of Seven Different Polyimide Films Bonded to 301 Stainless Steel written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-26 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pin-on-disk type of friction and wear apparatus was used to study the tribological properties of seven different polyimide films bonded to AISI 301 stainless steel disks at 25 C. It was found that the substrate material was extremely influential in determining the lubricating ability of the polyimide films. All seven films spalled in less than 1000 cycles of sliding. This was believed to be caused by poor adherence to the 301 stainless steel or the inability of the films to withstand the high localized tensile stresses imparted by the deformation of the soft substrate under sliding conditions. The friction coefficients obtained for six of the polyimides varied between 0.21 to 0.32 while one varied between 0.32 to 0.39. Fusaro, R. L. Glenn Research Center NASA-TM-81413, E-328

Book Comparison of the Weight Loss and Adherence of Nine Different Polyimide Films Thermally Aged at 315 C and 350 C in Air high Temperature Lubricants

Download or read book Comparison of the Weight Loss and Adherence of Nine Different Polyimide Films Thermally Aged at 315 C and 350 C in Air high Temperature Lubricants written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-08-13 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermal exposure experiments at 315 and 350 C were performed in air on nine different types of polyimides applied to thin 304 stainless steel foils. The tests were conducted to determine which polyimide was the most thermally stable and adherent when subjected to long exposure times at elevated temperatures. One polyimide designated PIC-7 was found to be more thermally stable than the others; however, it did not possess the adherent properties of PIC-2 and PIC-5. It was concluded that as far as thermal stability and adherence are concerned, five of the polyimides are more suitable for high temperature applications than the other four. Fusaro, R. L. Book excerpt: Polyimides have been available commercially for over 25 years, but are still frequently thought of as new materials, due largely to their performance and high technology end uses, which ensure that levels of research and development remain high. This detailed review describes the synthesis, properties, processing and applications of condensation, addition and hybrid polyimides. An additional indexed section containing several hundred abstracts from the Rapra Polymer Library database provides useful references for further reading.

Book Tribological Evaluation of Composite Materials Made from a Partially Fluorinated Polyimide

Download or read book Tribological Evaluation of Composite Materials Made from a Partially Fluorinated Polyimide written by Robert L. Fusaro and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preliminary tribological studies on a new polyimide formulated from the diamine 2,2-bis [4-(4-aminophenoxy) phenyl] hexafluoropane (4-BDAF) indicates polyimides made from this diamine have excellent potential for high temperature applications. Two different polyimides were formulated from the diamine, and five different composites were formulated using one the polyimides. Composites were made using 10 weight percent (w/o) graphite fluoride powder, 20 w/o PTFE powder, 30 w/o silver powder, or 50 w/o carbon fibers, both graphitic and non-graphitic types. The powder additions did not improve the tribological properties as much as the carbon fibers. Results also indicated that improved high temperature stability and tribological properties may be obtained with a polyimide made from the dianhydride pyromellitic acid (PMDA) rather than the dianhydride benzophenonetetracarboxylic acid (BTDA).

Book Friction and Wear of Polymer Composites

Download or read book Friction and Wear of Polymer Composites written by Klaus Friedrich and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing a useful summary of current knowledge on the friction and wear properties of composite materials, this book fills the gap between publications on fundamental principles of tribology and those on the friction and wear behavior of metals and polymers. Detailed coverage is given of: the fundamental aspects of tribology in general and polymer composites in particular; the effects of the microstructure of composites on friction and wear behavior under different external loading conditions; and the problem of the control of friction and wear behavior in practical situations. Although emphasis is on polymer composites associated with bearing-type applications, part of the book is also devoted to the friction and wear of metal-based composites and rubber compounds. The data are represented in the form of 277 figures, diagrams and photographs, and 68 tables. The author index covers more than 670 references, and the subject index more than 1,000 keywords. The book will be of particular interest to: those involved in research on some aspects of polymer composites tribology (material scientists, physical chemists, mechanical engineers); those wishing to learn more methods for solving practical friction or wear problems (designers, engineers and technologists in industries, dealing with selection, reprocessing and application of polymer engineering materials); and teachers and students at universities.
