Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2013 in the subject South Asian Studies, South-Eastern Asian Studies, grade: A, , language: English, abstract: The Mising is a major ethnic group of north east India and second largest tribe in Assam. As per 2001 census the Mising constitutes 17.8 percent of the tribal population of Assam and the total numbers of Mising population is 587,310. They are found mostly in Lakhimpur, Jorhat, Dibrugarh Dhemaji and Golaghat Districts of Assam. The Mising, being riverside people, have special liking to live on the riverbanks in spite of the fact that they have to face the flood of the river during the monsoon. Sometime flood force them to shift their villages. The Mising are still very backward and their socio-economic conditions have not developed. This essay attempts to explore the socio-economic condition of Mising people of Assam. Book Looking Back into the Future

Download or read book Looking Back into the Future written by M. S. Prabhakara and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-11-29 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines questions of identity, ethnicity, sovereignty and insurgency in northeastern India, and especially on Assam and its neighbourhood. Written by an academic-journalist, the various articles situate these in their larger social, economic, political and, above all, historical context, the last being especially important in their becoming a part of colonial India relatively late, well after colonial control was established in the rest of India. Based on close, ground level experience involving extensive travel and interaction with the people, this collection is the result of a long journalistic career spanning nearly 50 years in the northeast region. Written in simple, lucid language, the essays cover a range of themes including culture, belief, and identity; homeland and language politics; and insurgency and separatism. The volume also achieves a uniquely dual historical value – while the articles themselves include a lot of historical information tracing the roots of the various issues discussed, the articles themselves range from 1974 to 2010, providing the modern reader with a series of historical moments captured in their immediacy. Of interest to students, academics, researchers in politics, peace & conflict studies, politics, sociology, history, language, those interested in northeast India, policy-makers, cultural studies, etc.

Book Southeast Asian Tribes Minorities and Nations Volume 1

Download or read book Southeast Asian Tribes Minorities and Nations Volume 1 written by Peter Kunstadter and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-14 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major source of political instability in Southeast Asia has been ethnic diversity and the lack of congruence between ethnic distributions and national boundaries. Here twenty specialists base their papers largely on original field work in Burma, China, India, Laos, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam. Contrary to the usual picture of tribal people as isolated, homogeneous, stable, and conservative, the papers show tribesmen are often a dynamic force in the modern history of Southeast Asian states. Descriptions of tribal life and government programs, together with charts, tables, maps, and photographs give a wealth of data. Originally published in 1967. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. Book Indigenous People of Barak Valley

Download or read book Indigenous People of Barak Valley written by Atiqur Rahman Barbhuiya and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2020-01-27 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Major sections of Muslims presently living in Barak Valley were converted from local indigenous tribes due to the spiritual influence of holy Arabian saints coming from the Middle East. Tea tribes of Assam having only 150 years of history of settlement in Assam and the subjects of Ahom kings living in Assam are considered as indigenous, while Muslims, the subjects of contemporary Koch kings and Kachari kings, living in Assam with 700/800 years of settlement history have not been considered as indigenous or Assamese Khilonjia. This book explores the roots of Hindus and Muslims living in Barak Valley. Bengali Hindus and Muslims living in Assam should look back to their history if they want to live in Assam in a dignified manner. Our past history is our strength, not weakness.
