Book excerpt: This book is a collection of primary source material on the myths and legends of origin of the tribal people of Orissa along with a section on the procedures of reading myths. This purpose of the book is twofold. First, it will try to correct the popular urban belief or the belief of the educated-elitist belief to be exact-that our tribal people are ignorant, uneducated and uncultured and that the little "culture" etc., they have the gift of the "mainstream" civilization. And second, it will attempt to bring out the richness of tribal culture, carried in their myths and legends, and to establish its antiquity in the context of the prime civilizations of the world.

Book Folklore of Tribal Communities

Download or read book Folklore of Tribal Communities written by N. Patnaik and published by Gyan Books. This book was released on 2002 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Unwritten Literary World of Tribal Communities is nothing but the Oral Literature or Folklore. It covers stories, legends, myths, song, dances, riddles, proverbs, metaphors and such other aspects of their culture which are in their memory and handed down from generation to generation. These sources of their literary world speak of their spiritual world and the eco-system. The older persons are the store house of of their oral literature and from these sources the literary world of theirs is disseminated among the youngsters. This book gives the folklore of four tribal communities namely, the Kharias, the Oraons, the Santals and the Mundas of Orissa. The Kharias are a hunting and food gathering community, the Oraons are noted for the dance and music and the Santals are well known as hard working cultivators and skilled in wall painting, and noted for their sense of beauty. The cultural patterns of these tribal communities and their life-ways and thought-ways are different from one another as revealed in the analysis of their oral literature. Even though they lead a life full of wants and difficulties, they are very labourious and joyful by virtue of which they forget their sorrows and miseries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book Traces The British Government S Policy Towards The Aboriginal People Of Orissa, Particularly The Kandhs, And The Reaction It Caused In The People. Book Myths of Middle India

Download or read book Myths of Middle India written by Verrier Elwin and published by . This book was released on 1949 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is an anthology of 540 distinct tribal myths of origin from central India. These myths were all recorded, most for the very first time, in the course of field work. "Man and the Universe," "The Natural World," "Human Life," and "Human Institutions," are the subject divisions for the myths and include such chapters on air and water, mammals, food, disease, and custom and taboo. Each myth is preceded by the related tribe's name and where it was recorded. In the introduction to each chapter, which analyzes the relevant category of myths and assigns origin, other myths from the region and from other parts of India are noted and parallels drawn. Rich in detail, this volume will be essential to scholars and general readers alike.
