People of this tribe mostly live in Surat, Tapi, Dang, Narmada and Sabarkantha districts. They use herbs, fruits and roots as food. They hunt rabbits, deer, cocks and birds and use them for food. They were engaged in the profession of collecting catechu from its trees, so the tribe is known as ‘Kathodi’ tribe. In this modern time, machinery and factories are established to prepare catechu, so the old profession of preparing catechu by this tribe is stopped. Nowadays, people of this tribe have started farming works andWork of collecting forest products. To uplift the people of this tribe, various departments have tried by providing opportunities of self-employment and home industries. Literacy rate of this tribe is 23.54%. Irrespective of the influence of modernisation, urbanisation, industrialization and overall development in tribal areas there are still certain communities which are extremely backward. such tribal communities have been identified as primitive tribes. Kathodi is one of them.. This study belongs to Kathodi tribes. Such studies are very rare in Gujarat state.. The present research study is exploring nature study of the living conditions and social-economical positions of Kathodi tribes as an especially primitive community in Vijaynagar Taluka in Sabarkantha district which is located in Gujarat state. The study systematically presents the impacts of development schemes on the socio-economic conditions of Kathodi. It also throws adequate light on the problems associated with schemes both at the level of beneficiaries as well as at the promoters level too. . .

Book Art For Tribal Rituals in South Gujarat India

Download or read book Art For Tribal Rituals in South Gujarat India written by Eberhard Fischer and published by . This book was released on 2021-12-29 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: * A visual record of ritual practices of the tribal people of Gujarat, by two eminent anthropologists* Records the accomplishments of Adivasi ritual leaders, healers and crafts people of the pastArt for Tribal Rituals is the outcome of extensive fieldwork carried out by Eberhard Fischer and Haku Shah in South Gujarat in 1969. After an initial survey tour to locate village shrines and sacred pilgrimage sites, as well as specialists in rituals and crafts, the two art-anthropologists stayed in the field to observe as silent participants oracle and spirit-healing sessions, a death ceremony and the worship of local deities by the village communities. Fischer and Shah documented their experiences in unprecedentedly detailed photographic sequences, and as well, took precise notation of what they observed. In addition, they spoke to the specialists and carefully noted their comments, which are reproduced in this book as individual "?indigenous voices?". This book of 528 pages and 823 photographs thus presents painted stones, large wooden stone-slabs and figures - representations of bodies for otherwise unsettled souls of the dead - but also monumental wooden crocodiles, revered with piles of terracotta votive offerings. They also documented the production, installation and worship of these icons and ritual objects. An astonishing variety of expressive forms are displayed by these spectacular field photographs, taken half a century ago. This publication is a tribute to the artistic and ritualistic accomplishments of Adivasi ritual leaders, healers, and craftspeople of the past in a once remote area of Western India.

Book Tribal Development in Western India

Download or read book Tribal Development in Western India written by Amita Shah and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-08-12 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tribal communities in western India, as elsewhere in the country, have been facing increasing marginalisation and poverty. This is so despite a relatively better record of social movements and work by civil society organisations among them and their political inclusion. Further, the existing literature on tribals focuses more on their socio-cultural situation and less on their economic and human development. Addressing this gap in scholarship, this volume details the processes of tribal development and associated challenges in Gujarat, often viewed as a high-growth economy. Rich in interdisciplinary, empirical analyses, the book comprehensively addresses three important aspects of tribal development — human development, economic opportunities and governance. It critiques recent policy diagnoses and interventions, rather than evaluate policy-outcomes. The volume traces the genesis of continued marginalisation of tribals in the country, and contributes to the ongoing discourse on integrative tribal development. The work will interest scholars and students of development studies, tribal studies, economics, sociology, social work, as also policy-makers, activists, and governmental and non-governmental organisations in the field.

Book excerpt: This volume offers an insight into the socio-economic profile of tribes in the states of Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh. It looks into the various facets of the way of living of the tribes dwelling in these states. The effectiveness of tribal development projects in both the states have been analysed on several parameters including Work Participation Rate, literacy, housing and access to portable water, incidence of diseases and nature of employment, etc. It is commendable that Gujarat has fared better in terms of tribal development as a result of constant efforts of the state as well as central government policies. On the other hand Andhra Pradesh still lags far behind in the race. With the active participation of government, people and civil societies we dream of a new dawn for tribal people where they can march from Gloom to Glory with dignity.

Book excerpt: As an archaeologist Shereen Ratnagar has been long involved in studying the enigma of early kin-organized, small-scale and non-specialized societies which lack private landed-property and are free of a money economy; societies that we call tribal. Having conducted ethno-archaeological research amongst the tribal people in eastern Gujarat, she spent a few months living with them to investigate how, in spite of their miniscule land holdings, they are able to raise cash crops, year after year. Far from being abject or 'primitive', tribal people schedule their subsistence in a rational way, which is diversified in more ways that one, and families are self-sufficient to a considerable extent. That households think years ahead, is also abundantly clear from their provisions for the storage of food. Being Tribal attempts to define tribal society, traces tribal migrations in history, and examines their modes of agricultural production, This book also comes to the conclusion that tribal culture is robust, and that Indian society owes it to the tribal population--repeatedly displaced and marginalized in the interests of the powerful--to give them full scope to live out their destinies in their own way.
