Agricultural modernization has since long been introduced in the tribal areas of West Bengal, primarily with a view to raise the level of income, standard of living and lifestyle of the tribal people. The present book meant for elucidating the impact as well as adoption of modernization on tribal agriculture. The author has made a critical review of the agricultural modernization and mechanization and also the tradition of tribal agriculture. The author studied empirically the extent and nature of adoption of modern agricultural technology by the Santals and subsequently its impact on the lifestyle of the people in the locality. The obstacles or social-cultural constraints of the Santals towards the adoption of the modern agricultural technology have also been taken into consideration. Social, cultural and economic problems of the Santals have also been studied in connection with the agricultural modernization. The author estimated the maximum return over variable cost from existing cropping pattern followed by the Santals and suggested some appropriate measures to maximize net return by adopting alternative systems of cropping pattern. A close probe has also been made to evaluate the extent and nature of socio-cultural and socio-economic changes among the Santal cultivators due to agricultural modernization. The book would be of much use to the social scientists, researchers, students, planners and policy makers in the field of rural development. Persian being the dominant language of the whole area, a vast literature came into being in this language, covering subjects such as poetry, history, philosophy, religion and belles lettres. Persian literary creations, produced in Central Asia, over several centuries, are preserved in manuscript forms in leading archives and collections throughout the world. Indian libraries are particularly noted for having big collections of such Persian hand-written documents. Though almost all the manuscript collections have catalogues of their own, they are not classified in terms of the subject, Central Asia. The compilation of the present volume originated from the UNESCO-sponsored Central Asian Project which included preparation of descriptive catalogues of such Persian works as can be cited as representative works relating to the history and culture of Central Asia.

UNESCO's concept of development is based on the realization that communities define themselves in terms of cultural identities and development cannot be effective unless it is centred around that image. Thus, when one tries to examine the field and scope of tribal development, it becomes important to understand the concept of tribe, which is of course, contextual to their image. A large number of governmental and non-governmental agencies are involved in tribal development. While the problem of tribal development in India is primarily linked with the backwardness of tribal areas, poverty of the tribal people and the issue of integration of tribals with the rest of the population, the concept of development in tribal situations pose a number of difficulties. Even a good definition of tribal development may undergo scrutiny. Sociologists and Policy Makers view the tribal development as (a) a movement emphasizing building upon organizational structures, (b) a programme emphasizing on activities, (c) as a method of emphasizing certain achievable ends, (d) as a process of emphasizing upon what happens to people not only economically and socially but also psychologically, and (e) institutionalization of newly discovered skills and procedures leading to social change without completely breaking away from the past. However, many studies point out that the integrated developments of the tribals have brought out the inadequacies of these programmes. Though the efforts have been in the direction for the development of tribal particularly with the creation of special multi-purpose tribal blocks during the second plan period, however, a major breakthrough took place in the Fifth Five Year Plan in which a new strategy of tribal sub-plan for preparing micro plans for relatively valuably tribal groups requiring special attention was enunciated. In this context, the present study tries to retrospect the impact and implications of tribal welfare and developmental programmes in Erstwhile Warangal District of Telangana State.
