Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trial of Captain Porteous In presenting the following report of the trial of Captain Porteous, the text of which is that of the "Authentic Extract of the Proceedings," printed by order of Parliament on 25th March, 1737, some apology would seem to be due for the modest place occupied in this volume by the actual trial. Occasion has, however, been taken to collect all information obtainable regarding the Captain's character and career, the circumstances of the robbery for which Andrew Wilson suffered death, and the fatal and far-reaching events attending his execution; while the amount of unpublished material concerning the riot, which the Editor has been fortunate enough to find, has induced him to deal with that notable affair, and the subsequent proceedings in Parliament, much more fully than he at first intended. The Editor desires to express his thanks to those who have in various ways facilitated his labours - to Mr. Thomas Hunter, W.S., Town-Clerk, for permission to make extracts from the Records of Edinburgh Town Council, and to publish original documents preserved in the City Chambers; to Mr. John A. Fairley, for the use of valuable unpublished MSS.; to Mr. George P. Johnston, Mr. William Cowan, and Mr. Henry M. Mayhew, for assistance in connection with the Bibliography; and to Miss Margaret Morison, for the care and accuracy of her transcripts made at the British Museum and the Public Record Office. He would also acknowledge the courtesy of Mr. James L. Caw, who has allowed him to reproduce the well-known picture, "The Porteous Mob," by James Drummond, R.S.A., in the National Gallery of Scotland; and of Mr. Charles E. Green, who has permitted the reproduction of three plates from the late Mr. Grainger Stewart's "Portraits in the Hall of the Parliament House in Edinburgh" (1907). The Editor would be glad to receive particulars of any publications, other than those included in the Bibliography, relative to the Porteous Riot. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Criminal Trials, Illustrative of the Tale Entitled "the Heart of Mid-Lothian," Published From the Original Record: With a Prefatory Notice, Including Some Particular of the Life of Captain John Porteous John Porteous, (says his biographer, ) one of the Captainsof the cityguard of Edinburgh was son to Stephen Porteous, a tailor in Canongate. The father had a fair character in his employment, and was esteemed a good honest man, in the whole con duct of his life; his greatest misfortune was to have such a son as John was. The father early disco vered in the son a perverseness of nature, and a proneness to commit mischievous, and more than childish tricks. The mother, out of a blind affec. Tion to her child, took them all for growing proofs of his mettle, and as marks of an extraordinary and sprightly genius. This book was released on 2013-09-20 with total page 1416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: “Rob Roy + The Heart of Midlothian (2 Unabridged and fully Illustrated Classics with Introductory Essay and Notes by Andrew Lang)” is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Rob Roy (1817) is a historical novel by Walter Scott. It is a tale of adventure in the 18th century, set in the Scottish highlands, whose hero is the legendary maverick outlaw Rob Roy Macgregor. Though Rob Roy is not the lead character, his personality and actions are key to the novel's development. The Heart of Midlothian is a novel of Scottish history by Sir Walter Scott, published in four volumes in 1818. It is often considered to be his finest novel. The Old Tolbooth prison in Edinburgh is called “the heart of Midlothian,” and there Effie Deans is held on charges of having murdered her illegitimate son. Her sister, Jeanie Deans, makes a dangerous journey through outlaw-infested regions to London to seek the queen’s pardon for Effie. Justice and Scottish Presbyterianism are discussed at length, and issues of conscience provide the novel’s themes. Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) was a prolific Scottish novelist, poet, historian, and biographer who is often considered both the inventor and the greatest practitioner of the historical novel.

Book The Heart of Mid Lothian

Download or read book The Heart of Mid Lothian written by Walter Scott and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2006-09-28 with total page 777 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jeanie Deans, a dairymaid, decides she must walk to London to gain an audience with the Queen. Her sister is to be executed for infanticide and, while refusing to lie to help her case, Jeanie is desperate for a reprieve. Set in the 1730s in a Scotland uneasily united with England, The Heart of Mid-Lothian dramatizes different kinds of justice - that meted out by the Edinburgh mob in the lynching of Captain Porteous, and that encountered by a terrified young girl suspected of killing her baby. Based on an anonymous letter Scot received in 1817, this is the seventh and finest of Scott's 'Waverley' novels. It was an international bestseller and inspired succeeding novelists from Balzac to George Eliot.
