  • Author : Chris Forrester
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2011-08-27
  • ISBN : 3642120091

Download or read book High Above written by Chris Forrester and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-08-27 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frequently it is suggested that the ‘golden age' of television was during the period 1950-1960. It is true that television almost ruined Hollywood's fortunes during this period. But if this was the authentic golden age, then it was an age of black and white, somewhat limited creativity, poor reception, lack of competition (except in the United States) and – by and large – public service broadcasting. However, if we take 1950 as a generic ‘starting point' for modern television broadcasting, then we talk about a kind of prehistoric stage of the medium – in which it remained for the best part of three decades. The younger days of broadcasting were the 1980s; the time when commercial television started on a large scale and, in this youth, was getting younger in terms of programming. Luxembourg-based SES Astra appeared on the scene at exactly this time. Astra was instrumental in the dramatic developments in television that we have witnessed since then. This is the story we want to tell in this book. Without satellite technology and the success of satellite reception, without the resulting mass-market penetration of television sets and general economic prosperity we would not have the necessary base ingredients to make the great leap forward into digital, into HDTV, 3D-television, and the prospects of Ultra High Definition now in sight.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In amusement parks and theme parks the role of architecture in generating an emotional experience has long outgrown its mere functional and structural aspects. This trend is now pervading shopping malls, airports, museums, even banks, and is one which progressive architects will have to confront, as it becomes an increasingly important feature for investors and users in our pleasure-seeking society. With a wealth of international examples ranging from the prototype Disneyland (where Walt Disney's concepts of animation were congenially transformed into reality) to historical amusement parks and modern day theme parks, "Animation" investigates this global trend in contemporary architecture for the first time. Rich visual images and astute analytical texts reveal how animation architecture functions, the effects it can achieve and the uses it can be put to.

  • Release : 2015-01-05
  • ISBN : 0520284488
  • Pages : 244 pages

Download or read book Fantasy Islands written by Julie Sze and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2015-01-05 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of China and its status as a leading global factory are altering the way people live and consume. At the same time, the world appears wary of the real costs involved. Fantasy Islands probes Chinese, European, and American eco-desire and eco-technological dreams, and examines the solutions they offer to environmental degradation in this age of global economic change. Uncovering the stories of sites in China, including the plan for a new eco-city called Dongtan on the island of Chongming, mega-suburbs, and the Shanghai World Expo, Julie Sze explores the flows, fears, and fantasies of Pacific Rim politics that shaped them. She charts how climate change discussions align with US fears of China's ascendancy and the related demise of the American Century, and she considers the motives of financial and political capital for eco-city and ecological development supported by elite power structures in the UK and China. Fantasy Islands shows how ineffectual these efforts are while challenging us to see what a true eco-city would be.

Book Culture as Capital

    Book Details:
  • Author : Slavko Kacunko
  • Publisher : Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH
  • Release : 2015-03-02
  • ISBN : 3832538992
  • Pages : 383 pages

Download or read book Culture as Capital written by Slavko Kacunko and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2015-03-02 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By following and reproducing the cultural turn, the rhetoric of cultural mix and hybridism is disseminated today primarily in its crossing of trade barriers. Cultures reduced to their exchange value function as capital - an accumulative, speculative and, ultimately, financial affair. In some of its media and site-(un)specific manifestations, process art - which aims to encompass both old and new media art - seems to resist this pressure, despite, nonetheless, not being protected from regulations and incorporations. In the present collection of his recent essays, Slavko Kacunko discusses the process art by crossing the disciplines of art history and comparative media-, visual- and -cultural studies. As a first approximation, several historiographical remarks on closed-circuit video installations underline their importance as a core category of process art. In the second part, the problems of process art, seen as a threshold of art history, are further examined in another retroanalytical step, in which concepts and objects related to `mirror', `frame' and `immediacy' are analyzed as the triple delimitation of visual culture studies. In the third part, previously outlined manifestations of what is termed the `post-visual condition' are summarized and projected to the `coreless core' of the emerging art and research related to the coreless beings par excellence, the bacteria.

Book Freedom

    Book Details:
  • Author : Katrin Flikschuh
  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons
  • Release : 2013-04-23
  • ISBN : 0745654746
  • Pages : 184 pages

Download or read book Freedom written by Katrin Flikschuh and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-04-23 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this engaging new book, Katrin Flikschuh offers an accessible introduction to divergent conceptions of freedom in contemporary liberal political philosophy. Beginning with a discussion of Isaiah Berlin's seminal distinction between negative and positive liberty, the book goes on to consider Gerald MacCallums alternative proposal of freedom as a triadic concept. The abiding influence of Berlin's argument on the writings of contemporary liberal philosophers such as Robert Nozick, Hillel Steiner, Ronald Dworkin and Joseph Raz, is fully explored in subsequent chapters. Flikschuh shows that, instead of just one negative and one positive freedom tradition, contemporary liberal thinkers articulate the meaning and significance of liberal freedom in many different and often conflicting ways. What should we make of such diversity and disagreement? Should it undermine our confidence in the coherence of liberal freedom? Should we strive towards greater conceptual and normative unity? Flikschuh argues that moral and political disagreement about freedom can often be traced back to differences in underlying metaphysical presuppositions and commitments. Yet these differences do not show liberal freedom debates to be confused or incoherent. On the contrary, they demonstrate the centrality of this philosophically elusive idea to the continued vitality of liberal political thinking.

Book excerpt: Corporate Museum has experienced more than one hundred years of growth, and it has become a significant member of the museum-associated universe because of its unique character. Meanwhile, the commercialization and multiplicity of the public museum have blurred the discrepancies between them. Many corporate museums are currently popular cultural tourist sites and representations of regional identities. By depicting an image of a corporate museum’s identity, this book critically investigates the design features of this type of museum, deriving insights from an examination of both its public presentation and its corporate task. It aims to present a basic overview of the corporate museum, including its history, in order to better examine the subject in an appropriate context. With the help of multi-interface examination of selected cases, this book intends to flesh out that the corporate museum serves both a commercial nature and also the public interest.
